Warren Spector Speaks Out on Epic Mickey Camera Criticisms
by Chris Arnone, posted on 07 December 2010 / 1,867 ViewsWhile Disney's Epic Mickey has received nearly universal critical acclaim, racking up a "generally favorable" score of 77 on Metacritic, one constant criticism has been the less-than-stellar third person camera. MTV Clutch Blog writer Quibian Salazar-Moreno got to interview Warren Spector himself about the issue faced by Epic Mickey's camera woes.
"Third person camera is way harder than I even imagined it could be. It is the hardest problem in video game development. Everybody gets it wrong. It's just a question of how close to right do you get it."

He goes on to talk about the camera differences between platformers, RPG's, and other third-person games. Spector stresses that he doesn't believe Epic Mickey is a platformer, but a game with multiple game types blended together.
"The bottom line is that we did the best we could given that we were not trying to make a platform game or an action adventure game, but a game where you get to decide what the game felt like moment to moment."

I'm with you Fufinu, I'm not sure I'd call the review collection out there universal acclaim. If you take away the few high outliers, it is mediocre. As far as camera goes. I have seen it done plenty of times. I have also seen bad. mario sunshine was pretty bad. no more heroes was pretty bad. Galaxy works fine. If you want to go off nintendo, god of war works fine. You may not see everything you are fighting sometimes, but generally more than acceptable. He just hasn't done it before. Either way after reading all the reviews, I was under the impression that this is a game to pass on. I will just wait for the hd releases on ps move or kinect and hopefully he cleans that stuff up.
It's not as bad as anything pooped out in Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, and good camera work is not even as vital for the game as it is in those, so you're good Warren.
So - 77 is nearly universal acclaim? Also this guy should play Uncharted 2 to see how a camera should handle in TP.
what happened to all that talk about this guy being one of the greatest game designers ever? lol

I don't have a problem with the camera myself. If you don't like the camera's position then you can change it. If the camera placement could only be decided by the game itself I'd understand people having problems with it - but you can move the camera and center the camera behind Mickey with a simple button press. What's the problem..? I've only just started playing the game so maybe there are problems later on but so far the camera isn't causing me any problems. :o/
Yup. Third person never ever works. Have you ever played that shitty Mario series? Good lord. And Zelda? Don't even get me started on Final Fantasy. Pure crap. Clearly third person just doesn't work.
He traditionally makes FPS's, right? Of course the camera isn't going to be as good as in Mario Galaxy. Those people have been making 3rd person cameras for about as long as they've existed.
Maybe if he wasnt fronting like Epic Mickey is some unique game. Lets be real, its a damn platformer no matter what elements he wanted to throw he should have focused some more time on camera, with that being said it wasnt that bad, ive played worst and better
Guys, you cannot be serious when you compare this game to the Mario Galaxies. Take a closer look at the game design of Epic Mickey and SMG. If you try hard enough I'm sure you are going to be able to see the difference. I'll even help you out with the start: there are no small round worlds in Epic Mickey. That's one example, now find some more and tell me you still believe that SMG camera would work well in Epic Mickey. It would not.

Piss poor excuse. A platformer on the same system has done camera controls I will say perfectly (because I have seen no better). I am talking about Super Mario Galaxy 2. I remember Spector said Epic Mickey has the "best graphics" on Wii, I hope he wasn't focussing on graphics too much.
Yeah, cunger, I was about to say... He clearly hasn't looked at Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.
Fail..... Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 has wicked camera controls which are near perfect.
Ask those that know how to do it well for help? Sorry im sure its hard but there really isnt a good excuse for it anymore. There is plenty of people surely one of them would have helped out.
Warren needs to talk to Nintendo's developers who did SMG. Even talk to Insomniac Games who did Spyro and Ratch & Clank. The camera was excellent in those games. Even Sucker Punch did Sly Cooper in tight quarters with decent camera angles. I'm sorry Warren, but your excuse has failed. If this was back in the mid 80's or even early 90's I could sympathize with you, but this is 2010. You guys should have this mastered by now. Epic Mickey is still a good game, but it's far from great and all the scores prove this. It should have been EPIC like the name says.
Indeed Dahuman, the Galaxy games are as close to perfection as you'll get with these types of games. Anywho, the camera in Epic Mickey needs a great deal of manual direction from the player (via the control pad on the WiiMote), but this never gets in the way of the game (in my humble opinion of course). Other than that, there's a couple of spaz moments and camera locks... but those are very few and far in between. So yeah, definitely not the perfect camera, but it very rarely detracts from the great experience that Epic Mickey provides.
LOL, Specter would have been right 10 years ago. It was hard, but it's been refined by sooo many games since then. Specter should have looked to other developers like Nintendo for some support on it. Rather than isolating development. I understand where he is coming from... but still. Just look around and ask.
can't compared Gears type camera to Epic Mickey in any way hunter, you should be comparing SMG or SMG2 to it, where the camera is good about 98% of the time.
Yeah I know its hard, but everybody gets it wrong? O RLY? I never felt that the camera had issues in the SoT trilogy ( yes, trilogy) or UC... they got IMO the camera pretty much perfectly :-)
