Million Seller Watch: Wii - News

Wii is the leader home console in sales this generation; the Nintendo machine that introduced motion controllers to gamers and has sold over 77 million units in the world.

Checking Vgchartz data we found out that the Wii has a total of 91 titles that sold over a million units worldwide. Check out the chart below, broken down by publisher:

From those 91 titles, 27 are published by Nintendo, almost a 30% of the total.
Those 91 Titles that sold over a million units are distributed among 19 publishers.
The best selling third party game is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (10th place in the list) from SEGA with 7.69 million sold. In second spot is Just Dance from Ubisoft (15th place) and the third place goes to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (16th place) from Activision.
Ubisoft and EA are tied in second place with ten games each. Just Dance (4.52 MIllion units) is the best selling title from Ubisoft on Wii, while EA Sports Active is the best selling game for EA
Activision is in third place with eight games, of which four are games from the Guitar Hero franchise and three are from the Call Of Duty franchise.
SEGA is in 4th place with seven games, five of those seven are games starring Sonic.
Nintendo has nine titles in the top ten, 15 in the top 20 and 20 in the top 30, clearly dominating the sales chart.
There are five publishers with two games that sold over a million and six publisher with one million seller.
Mario Kart Wii, placed in the third spot, is the best selling Mario game in Wii with 23.69 million units sold, followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii with 17.60 millions.

Seriously, a very dated system like Wii that should have been out since 2003 are gonna beat PS2? PS2 and Wii best looking games are still equal despite 6 years gap. Both PS2 and Wii support progressive scan. And heck PS2 has been out for 10 years while the dated and cheap-made Wii released in 2006? That's just too much! I believe Nintendo will replace a new Wii in 2012 and discontinue the current Wii since people will get smarter and invest more on HD consoles, which also have a much better motion sensing device (not games that support them though).

Considering the holidays are coming up, and all of them are quite new, I do think it's possible that Other M or Goldeneye may get there. And I mean, if stuff like Sonic and the Secret Rings made it to a million, I'm not sure why the vastly more lauded Sonic Colors wouldn't as well. Epic Mickey's another one that seems like it got a lot of hype (and a lot of pre-orders) and will eventually get to a million. Will any of them get to a million this year? Probably not. But I think many of them have the potential to get it in 2011.

And you're underestimating Donkey Kong in my opinion. It's already halfway there after one week, and it's only out in America. I definitely think it will hit a million before 2010 is out.

I don't think we will see Kirby's Epic Yarn, Goldeneye, Metroid other M Epic Mickey or Sonic Colours on this list anytime soon, Donkey Kong should sail onto the list after the new year. I am just amazed given the sales for the resident evil series we haven't seem more commitment from capcom to bring us a wii port of res 5. Great also to see games like monster hunter and the call of duty series on the list.

I disagree about the Monster Hunter 3 comment. Could've been even better. The game was missing lots of things from the other Mh games (Especially the PSP game features). It was great effort but still lacked something. Not many people know about MH even till now and I'm not surprised.

If you held out like a week before making this list, I'm sure Donkey Kong Country Returns will be on there.

Do we think any of Wii's other high-profile releases this year have a chance? I think the ship's probably sailed at this point for Kirby's Epic Yarn, great as it is, but what of Goldeneye, Other M, Epic Mickey and Sonic Colors?

Well considering the 360 has 109 titles that has sold over 1 million (according to VGChartz) i am not impressed, PS3 is on 74. Both of these consoles top 20 is better than the whole 91 Wii games list, not that its relevant.

no offence buddy but the ps2 sold over 140 million last year and has continued to sell new even today its still selling however the DS is a handheld console not a home console like the wii, now ill take into considderation the Wii is only 4 years old and has already made a huge dent into the ps2's fantastic achievement but given the fact that if Nintend continue to sell the Wii for the next 6 years and it continues to sell as much as it is now im sure your maths is upto scratch but in just 4 more years it could sell as much as 160 million consoles, easily beating the ps2's sales record.

tha DS has the market all to its self, i cant see any challenge comming from microsoft or sony and the only challenger is the iphone/ipod touch but there not really a dedicated console so the DS will continue to enjoy the handheld console domination and so will the 3DS next year.

Fifty out of those games are what I would consider games that the average 'core' gamer can get behind (not a 'casual' game). But the Wii clearly doesn't sell that gype of game...

The reason that most of these titles didn't appear on the top ten is that they reached their million sold status over a longer period of time. The Wii has a long burn rate when comparing software salses to PS360. The success of Wii software goes unnoticed by gaming communities because only the million sold in a week makes headlines, or makes a list like that provided by VG.

Though its clear that Nintendo dominates, over 60 million-sellers proves that the Wii indeed sells software, especially considering how the platform has been shunned by many third party developers. I'm looking at you Square Enix. Four years after it became pretty clear that the Wii would be a hit, your biggest games are a pair of Dragon Quest spinoffs, a DS port, and a supposed launch title that came out three years late.

In terms of this year, Square Enix, Tecmo Koei, and Namco really dropped the ball on providing the Wii with something substantial. Hits are going off left and right.

Ubisoft is on a killing spree, and Sega has steadily been providing the Wii with content all generation. Activision pretty much owns the Wii's FPS market and THQ has a concentrated effort in uDraw. Disney has been quietly reaping the benefits of Wii development as well.

Konami has about 12 games for the Wii with the word "Evolution" in the title that chart every week. . EA has managed to survive while creating subpar games for the console. Unfortunately, both are culprits of milking.

Marvelous, selling over 77M, no other console except Plystation has managed to sell this much, generation after generation Nintendo console havs sold less and less but WIi has put a stop to the pattern. I can see it hitting 82M end of year, it's only rouhgly 3.5M away, ( 78.5M with this weeks numbers).

Nice article, but I have a few suggestions for ya:

Somehow, Endless Ocean is not a million seller yet (996k) even though the counter says 1.01 million.

Gold's Gym: Cardio Workout has been separated into two games with .98 and .25 million sales. Combined the game is at 1.23 million.

Rock Band 2 is at .97 million units sold in Americas only. No EMEAA data is accounted for (this goes for the PS3 version as well, yet the 360 version has all sales data present.)
