Americas Preorders Chart, 23rd Jan 2010 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 26 January 2010 / 10,489 Views

Mass Effect 2 looks to dominate the big releases this week with over 470,000 preorders. Going by previous pre-order to week one scalars, an opening of over 800,000 in the Americas is looking likely - only Halo, GTA, Call of Duty and Gears of War have had bigger openings on Xbox360 to date. With a strong launch also assured in Europe, Mass Effect 2 should easily pass one million units worldwide in week one.

MAG also looks like having a strong first week - over 300,000 is looking likely although the title benefited from some strong pre-order incentives along with a public beta, both of which will have helped to inflate pre-orders a little hence the seemingly more conservative week one estimate. Two Wii titles also have big releases this week - Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (~70,000 week one) and No More Heroes 2 (~20,000 week one).

Looking ahead, God of War III continues to add around 10-15k units per week, with increases closer to launch I'd be expecting final pre-orders and week one sales to be similar to Mass Effect 2, possibly a little higher. BioShock 2 looks slightly disappointing based on current pre-orders. The original game sold almost identically to the original Mass Effect but that isn't looking to be the case with the sequels - a week one of around 500,000 combined across Xbox360 (65%) and PS3 (35%) is looking likely, stronger than the original game but not as big as many of the other Q1 2010 releases.

It is interesting to observe some of the Xbox / Playstation splits for multi-platform titles. While Bioshock, Aliens vs Predator and Alpha Protocol show splits in line with the hardware ratio, titles like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dante's Inferno and Final Fantasy XIII show splits strongly in favour of PS3 and for various reasons. For Battlefield, the PS3 version has an exclusive demo (you'll notice the 360 version is now starting to catch up as the launch approaches), Dante's Inferno seems to be picking up interest from the God of War audience and Final Fantasy has always been associated more with the Playstation brand than Xbox.

Is it just me, or do some multiplats actually lead on the PS3 in preorders for NA? O_o

I can understand that for BF:BC2, since PS3 had beta, even though FPS should be more popular on the Xbox. Also Dante Inferno can have larger fanbase, since it's a GoW clone. And Maybe FFXIII is more popular on the PS3, because it's a PS series in it's core. Okay, now that I've answered my question, I can go. So long!

@ItsameMatt: You expect a lot of cancelled pre-orders because you cancelled yours? Get off your high horse, dude. Your opinion =/= majority.

Also, I find it puzzling how a game trying to copy another in every way can be better than it. But whatever, to each their own, as weird as it can be. Still, your first comment makes your credibility questionable.

Yakuza 3 isn't on the list? i figured that would be a big deal, i cant wait for it.

My firt gamelist of the year:
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom ultimate all stars
No more heroes 2
Mass effect 2 (only if there be a pc version)

ItsameMatt (on 26 January 2010)

I preordered Dante's Inferno for 360. The demo was so much better than the God of War III one. I don't even know if I'll rent GoWIII. I also preordered No More Heroes 2. Does this also include cancelled preorders? I'm sure there will be some for MAG. Based on my beta impressions and the way my friends have felt, I don't expect the sales to be as high as the preorders would indicate.

  • 0
Notorius.A.i.G (on 26 January 2010)

ME2 will have a opening around 1 Million.
MAG will have a opening around 600 - 750 K
God of War 3 will have a opening of around 1 - 1.2 Million

It's great to see Final Fantasy 13 picking up some steam.

Quite surprised at those numbers for Dante's Inferno. Glad to see Heavy Rain just making the top half too.

800k for ME2 alone, DAM!
nice numbers all round, and nice to see SO4 coming up

insane boost for ME2
FFXIII(PS3) and BFC2(360) got a nice boost as well
happy to see SO4 on the list
God of War 3 will probably lead the list till its release after this week

MarshmallowMan (on 26 January 2010)

Solid lineup for both PS3 and 360!
Boy, they sure don't let up after the holidays, do they?
You need a second job to pay for all the awesome games, but if you had a second job, you wouldn't have time to play them! What to do??

  • 0
Flame (on 26 January 2010)

Why is Dante's Inferno PS3 higher than 360's?

Thumbs up to Mass Effect 2 :D

  • 0
Chairman-Mao (on 26 January 2010)

Anyone know why BC2 PS3 > BC2 360?

Also glad to see Heavy Rain increasing a bit. 7k this week is nice. At that rate it could just do 100k first week worldwide.

  • 0
heruamon (on 26 January 2010)

ME2 is going to psot HUGE numbers this week...well over a million WW with ease...3, maybe 4 million LTD as well.

mm, I'm one that's waiting on NMH2's price to fall.

I can't afford all the games this year, so I'm in no hurry to pay full price for a relatively short single player games...

  • 0
leo-j (on 26 January 2010)

300K first week in the U.S is a huge opening for a new ip imo.. on PS3 exclusively

so it should easily cross 1M LTD world wide

  • 0
binary solo (on 26 January 2010)

It's obvious Dante's will open much better on PS3 than Bioshock 2, and Bioshock 2 will open much better on 360 than Dante's. But will Bioshock 2 PS360 beat Dante's PS360, or will it be the other way round?

  • 0
kunaixhaku (on 26 January 2010)

i;' expecting god of war to top 1 million in america alone week one and maybe about 400k others? 1.4-1.6 mill first week for this game it'll be huge

  • 0
Boutros (on 26 January 2010)

Mass Effect 2 numbers are amazing. I wonder what are the PC numbers. Surely above one million first week on 360+PC.

I need to pre-order WKC ASAP!

And Heavy Rain too!

And FFXIII too!

  • 0
leatherhat (on 26 January 2010)

God of war looks like it will break a million week one in America.

  • 0
palitococo (on 26 January 2010)

reaver just to confirm, i put my preorder of WKC 1 month ago, and were 2 copies (1 for a friend), im wating for this since 2007, im with u jrpgs need more support from us, but 80K are pretty good (ratchet:TOD sell 68K first week and have 660K now in NA), lets gonna see the legs, an very important factor.

  • 0
Crystalchild (on 26 January 2010)

i'd like to know the sales after Mag and ME2 are out.. im expecting at least 50% more as it is now from WKC, about the same for star ocean, and 100%< or more from FFXIII.

  • 0
Solid_Raiden (on 26 January 2010)

Seriously? GOW is to be on par with Mass Effect or a "little" higher then it? Who does the math here? GOW has been crushing Mass Effects Preorders and ioi doens't even count the fact that Gamestop has been on a huge promotion of Mass Effect with their exclusive preorder bonus which I must say, is much more attractive then most preorder bonuses. Makes me think that the Mass Effect final sales will be lower due to inflated preorders because of that. I doubt ioi has put this in his calculations. I'm guessing the game will be slightly over tracked for week one.

  • 0
chriscox1121 (on 26 January 2010)

GoW sales are going to be extremely high it seems. Looks like Final Fantasy will never top the chart

  • 0
Dexorosorous (on 26 January 2010)

i'm getting white knight chronicles but i didn't preorder.

when i buy WKC, i will preorder Heavy Rain/Final Fantasy 13.

  • 0
reaver_x (on 26 January 2010)

@palito

i guess but iw as kinda hoping it would do 100k week one like demon souls did =(. shame on u PS3 owners. u beg and beg for JRPGS constantly, but u dont support the devs?? the hell is wrong with u guys?? if u want more RPG's on ur system , then this is not the right message to be sending

  • 0
grimygunz (on 26 January 2010)

heavy rain looks like its gunna do better than i expected.
could be over 100k first week in america at this rate and increasing hype near launch. So it is possible for a 250k opening worldwide
wont make a profit with that but great for a game with low sales expectations but High critical acclaim expectations.

  • 0
palitococo (on 26 January 2010)

reaver, i think WKC sales gonna be ok, 80K its possible, with EU numbers this can reach (someday and helped by the sequel) 1M.

  • 0
Ping_ii (on 26 January 2010)

Heavy rain should hopefully pick up when we see some marketing for it.

  • 0
Xenostar (on 26 January 2010)

  • 0

"God of War III continues to add around 10-15k units per week, with increases closer to launch I'd be expecting final pre-orders and week one sales to be similar to Mass Effect 2, possibly a little higher."

SERIOUSLY?
This game will have 500k pre-orders 2 weeks before launch! how is that "SIMILAR" or "A LITTLE HIGHER"? This Game will open with 500k pre-orders easily

  • 0
Tridrakious (on 26 January 2010)

Looks like Heavy Rain could do 100k-150k in America.

Poor White Knight Chronicles, I've done my part of pre ordering it 2 weeks ago.

GoW III will hit a million in it's first week, could be on only America.

  • 0

Battlefield Bad Company 2 should release in 2 weeks not 6 weeks, right?

  • 0

wow @ FF13 PS3 increase!!!

  • 0

That's abysmal for NMH2. We'll see, but it looks like perhaps the original wasn't as enjoyed by it's owners as people on the internet make out.

  • 0
disolitude (on 26 January 2010)

@opa-opa
For the record, I'd play NMH2 and TvC any day before MAG, COD, Battlefield etc...and I am American...well Canadian :)

  • 0
Onibaka (on 26 January 2010)

@Opa-Opa
NMH2 and TvC superior to MAG?
A "9" in the Wii is very different from a "9" of a ps3 game.
I only have a wii and a psp, but i know that NMH is very overrated. The game isn`t even on par with a average ps2 game. The city part is terrible, in par with Driver for PSX, maybe worse. It is still a very good game, but it is very insulting to other games to receive the same scores. I liked the game, but it is a 7.5 game, not a 9.0 one.

  • 0
AnthonyW86 (on 26 January 2010)

Damn FFXIII 360 is falling behind! PS3 pre-orders almost 3 times higher this week and with half the install base.

Most impressed by Splinter Cell, 126k with 14 weeks to go!

  • 0
NicholasCage (on 26 January 2010)

I'm expecting a better first week for God of War 3 then Mass Effect 2. It still has 10 weeks of pre orders left and they said they are continuing to rake 10k pre orders a week and possibly more near launch.

  • 0
huaxiong90 (on 26 January 2010)

WOW!

1) Mass Effect 2 in for a huge opening.

2) God of War 3 is a beast.

3) MAG looks to be a success so far.

4) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for Xbox 360 is picking up strongly.

5) BioShock 2 for both Xbox 360 and PS3 are starting to pick up strongly, especially the 360 version. Let's hope we see strong increases in the next few weeks.

6) Dante's Inferno for PS3 is going strong.

7) FFXIII for PS3 is going strong.

8) Heavy Rain isn't looking too bad.

  • 0
Munkeh111 (on 26 January 2010)

Nice increase for ME 2, should get to around 700k in the US I think

GoW 3 is doing great, I think it should be able to beat ME 2 in the US, and given the PS3's greater strength outside of America, should certainly have a larger opening weekend WW.

  • 0

cant wait for masseffect

  • 0
donsterydo2 (on 26 January 2010)

If ME2 will be able to hit 800k in NA alone then in other regions game of this quality should easily sell 350k first week.

  • 0
Shonen (on 26 January 2010)

Wii owners are more like go to the store and buy, i hardly see any DS titles on pre-order charts still they sell like crazy same worths for Wii games ...

  • 0
Train wreck (on 26 January 2010)

Looks like Ubisoft was correct to cut its NMH2 sales forecast.

  • 0
Opa-Opa (on 26 January 2010)

MAG will sell probably around ~500K or more.
All the while two much more superior games on the Wii (NMH2;TvC) shall ultimately go by the wayside......
Horribly ironic how we Americans buy into something with the label of "Massive Action Game."

  • 0
DirtyP2002 (on 26 January 2010)

900k first week for ME2 worldwide is very possible. That is just massvie. With the launch trailer ad during this football match, more than 500k preorders are very possible in the US alone. so 700k first week in the US is a good guess. 200k for Europe and Japan is possible as well. I think it might do 50k in Japan, so 150k in Europe should be easy to reach. It really has a shot at 1 million first week. Awesome.

The Battlefield Bad Company demo will help Xbox360 sales more than PS3, because they already had a beta. BBC will definately sell more on 360.

I still want to see Alan Wake in these charts. A release date would help.

  • 0
Smeags (on 26 January 2010)

I'll be one of the people who will buy No More Heroes 2 without pre-ordering it. I prefer my games shrink wrapped and not coming from Game Stop. :-P

  • 0
reaver_x (on 26 January 2010)

@Montana

well for a game thats 7 weeks away it really isnt that bad. Keep in mind that the marketting hasnt come in too full play yet and there currently no CE or pre-order bonuses yet for NA which could also explain a lot

  • 0

Makes no sense at all.

wow nice numbers for Mass Effect 2 it will no doubt be huge.

sigh...i think im gonna cry when i see the numbers for WKC first week. Why is it ppl never buy the good games???why??? sniff.....snifff =-(

  • 0
--OkeyDokey-- (on 26 January 2010)

It'd be nice if God of War 3 could do a million week one. Advertising seems to be driving ME2 preorders through the roof right now. I hope we see something similar in the coming weeks for GoW.

  • 0
disolitude (on 26 January 2010)

Wow...Dantes Inferno numbers... anyone buying this for 360 and doesn't have Bayonetta is cheating themselves by buying an inferior game. And on PS3 you have God of War 3 so I don't know why you'd take a second look at Dantes...

I'm so disappointed by No More Heroes 2. I thought with all the hype and the great reviews that it would sell way better than the first. Maybe that won't be true. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I hope it succeeds.

When is Final Fantasy XIII going to pick up, too? It would be weird if the game had a sub 100k launch

  • 0
Ping_ii (on 26 January 2010)

  • 0
DaBuddahN (on 26 January 2010)

The PS3 will have a great couple of months. GoW3 will have a huge opening, MAG, for an unproven IP will also have a good opening.. Battlefield looks like it benefited from the PS3 exclusive BETA. Also, I don't believe Dante's Inferno has more pre-orders on the PS3 than the 360. Impressive.

ME2 will have a spectacular opening, I think it will be better received by the 360 community than FF13.

  • 0
haxxiy (on 26 January 2010)

Good numbers all around.

  • 0
TheThunder (on 26 January 2010)

I don't know how Dante's Inferno does it but that's more than what I was expecting.

Looks like my Prediction of GOW3 being the third biggest PS3 launch in NA after MW2 & GTA IV and topping MGS4 is probably gonna come true.

Great week thank Brett.

  • 0
Ping_ii (on 26 January 2010)

Huge increase on mass effect 2 guess those ads did a fine job eh, MAG will have a solid opening too 300k-350k!!!

  • 0
Vas-y (on 26 January 2010)

So No More Heroes 2 can't beat the first week sales of its predecessor? It will somehow flop like I thought.
PS3 and X360 will have strong releases in the next weeks.
