Nintendo Reports Q1 (Apr-Jun) Earnings And Shipment Updates
by Jacob Mazel, posted on 30 July 2009 / 2,458 ViewsNintendo reported operating profit of 40.4 billion Yen for the June 2009 quarter. In the previous June quarter, when Wii Fit, Mario Kart and other titles lifted hardware sales, Nintendo had reported an operating profit of 119.2 billion Yen. Currently $1 equals 97 Yen, putting Nintendo's operating profit for this quarter over $400 million.
For the most recent quarter, Nintendo shipped 2.23m Wiis and 5.97m DS systems (all models). Shipment figures through June bring Wii to 52.62m worldwide, with DS at 107.75m. Wii game shipments were 31.07m for the quarter, while DS game shipments were 29.09m. Through June 2009, 384.09m Wii games have been shipped worldwide. This is in addition to 596m DS games.
Nintendo shipped far less Wii systems than in the last June quarter (2.23m vs 5.17m) in the absence of major software releases ala Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. DS shipments were down about a million as well (5.97m vs. 6.94m), mainly because Nintendo shipped about 800,000 DSi before April 1 even though the launch was April 5.
Wii software dropped from 40.41m to 31.07m year over year, while DS software dropped from 36.59m to 29.09m.
Despite the drops, Nintendo maintained its shipment projections - 180m DS games, 220m Wii games, 30m DS systems, and 26m Wii systems for the year ending March 2010.

@Azelover: Like DKII said, those 2 won't bring significant boosts. WiiFit+ is the same game with new activities, how is that supposed to bring new customers? Wii Fit will be out for more than 1 and a half years before WF+ launches, so I can figure most people who want Wii Fit would have already figured the game was on sale. Remember it's the exact same game with new added activities, so I don't see how it could create the same buzz Wii Fit originally did when it launched. As for WSR, a lot of people will see it as a better Wii Sports. They don't explain the features of WM+ in any of the ads, other than saying it's better than old Wiimote. People get Wii Sports with the Wii, this will be good mostly for existing Wii owners. How many do you think will buy a Wii for WSR when the original WS was already packed in. This will not draw in many new gamers.
Wii Sports Resort won't sell much beyond the current Wii Sports audience, nor will Wii Fit Plus sell much beyond the current Wii Fit audience. So they won't be real significant hardware movers, thus won't be creating new Wii customers.
Erik Aston. Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus aren't new customer creators? Are you out of your mind? Are you implying that the New Super Mario Bros. Wii audience is larger and slower to gather than the untapped market that still exists? I guarantee you New Super Mario Bros. Wii will help bring in a lot of non-gamers, sure, but it's the combination of Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort that will truly drive growth beyond the gamer population, which already has the console.
Nintendo has always been very conservative with their projections, preferring to underestimate then overestimate. So for them to still keep these aggressive projections shows they have some real plans to boost hardware/software that they feel very confident about. Price cut & colours? Gotta say, 400m profit is a sweet, sweet, poor showing. Wish I had those kind of problems.
It looks like a lot is riding on New Super Mario Bros. Wii. That's the one real growth driver Wii has left for the year. Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus can move a lot of software, but aren't new customer creators. It's probably too late to fully restore Wii momentum, but a $200 Wii with NSMBW could still set some holiday sales records, seeing that past holidays were held back by stock.
Oh, chill out people. Ninty is still printing money - just not as much money. Profits are down, yes. But it could be Microsoft and (dear GOD --->) Sony worse where the net profit doesn't even exist to them.
Still keeping old shipment amounts? Nintendo is gonna unleash heck I suppose. Prise cut = confirmed.
Nintendo's numbers are way down. But I bet most of its competitors would love to make a profit of $400m in a single non-holiday quarter, and have that be considered a bad showing. If Nintendo's not altering their hardware and software forecasts, they must be planning something. We might well see that first Wii price reduction before year's end.
Worst quarter since the Wii was launched, both in revenue and income: http://www.tom-ross.de/nintendo_quarters.png And last quarter was also one of the worst, so it's more than one-time effects from Wii Fit, Mario Kart or DSi. Nintendo is in a downward trend.
Why when there is a drop in sales... PS3 and Wii, are people surprised that there is am glut in the retial channels? Thats why shipments are down this quarter - to allow that stock to sell off. Adjustments not required.
wow, softwares for both nint and sony are taking a huge dive.... or is it the Fit/MK GTA/MSG effect? in any case, both are pretty low on the quarter, below 0.7 per console.
Hrrrm. All shipment figures remain the same? Be interesting if that's the same in their Q2 updates... Seems like they do indeed have a cunning plan. Wii pricecut, new DSi/Lite colours and bundles in October, anyone?
No change in projections means that Nintendo were expecting this level of sales and obviously have the plan in place to have a surge in sales from now until March 2010. It'll be interesting to see how it all turns out!
I think it is 420 million...according to this http://coinmill.com/JPY_USD.html#JPY=40
52.62 million Wii's shipped by end of June 51.008 million Wii's sold by July 4 according to VGChartz Seems like some minor upwards adjustments are possible :) Anyway, good to hear all this, but it's not overly surprising
How much is 40.4 billion yen to USD and this is contradictory to Sony's earnings lol :(
