Nintendo Reports Q1 (Apr-Jun) Earnings And Shipment Updates
Nintendo reported operating profit of 40.4 billion Yen for the June 2009 quarter. In the previous June quarter, when Wii Fit, Mario Kart and other titles lifted hardware sales, Nintendo had reported an operating profit of 119.2 billion Yen. Currently $1 equals 97 Yen, putting Nintendo's operating profit for this quarter over $400 million.
For the most recent quarter, Nintendo shipped 2.23m Wiis and 5.97m DS systems (all models). Shipment figures through June bring Wii to 52.62m worldwide, with DS at 107.75m. Wii game shipments were 31.07m for the quarter, while DS game shipments were 29.09m. Through June 2009, 384.09m Wii games have been shipped worldwide. This is in addition to 596m DS games.
Nintendo shipped far less Wii systems than in the last June quarter (2.23m vs 5.17m) in the absence of major software releases ala Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. DS shipments were down about a million as well (5.97m vs. 6.94m), mainly because Nintendo shipped about 800,000 DSi before April 1 even though the launch was April 5.
Wii software dropped from 40.41m to 31.07m year over year, while DS software dropped from 36.59m to 29.09m.
Despite the drops, Nintendo maintained its shipment projections - 180m DS games, 220m Wii games, 30m DS systems, and 26m Wii systems for the year ending March 2010.
