The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

In August 2019 the gap grew in favor of the combined sales PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the last month by 28,154 units. In the last 12 months the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have caught up by 4.37 million units. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lead by a combined 19.13 million units.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in their first 70 months sold a combined 123.68 million units, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 142.81 million units.

Gap change in latest month: 28,154 – PS4 & XOne

Gap change over last 12 months: 4,368,408 – PS3 & X360

Total Lead: 19,131,920 – PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sales: 123,677,914

Total Combined PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales: 142,809,834

We should see a cross in about 2 years, if PS4 is not able to sell 130M lifetime.

Less than 35M to go for the PS4-XB1. I think they've got that one.

If the PS4 and X1 are still ahead if the PS5 and X2 launch, I would still call it a win. Total sales are not the only thing that matter its also about how fast you can sell them and seventh gen simply had more time to sell. Even if the 8th gen twins get outsold by their 7th gen counterparts they will still be much more profitable.
