Today we present to you the worldwide and regional sales for the four weeks ending December 28th, 2008. As you might expect, there was a sizeable spike in the final week as a number of people took their Christmas Wiis online to download some games. Titles in bold italic were released in some region in December.

- World of Goo continues to top the charts in the Americas, and has had a strong 1.5-week debut in PAL, but takes only third worldwide to two titles that have done well in all three regions (My Aquarium, Tetris Party).
- Not much new stuff has shown up overall, since the flash-in-the-pan titles that pop up for a week or two and then disappear get shoved well down the charts when compared to monthly sales for the consistent top-sellers.
- Japan is one exception, which had four new titles pop up in December in addition to two that were released in November. We'll see next month which ones have real staying power.
- My Pokemon Ranch is close to going gold worldwide, though it still has a long way to go to catch Final Fantasy in total revenue.
- Some new American releases -- Fun! Fun! Minigolf and Tiki Towers are both at about 7,000 with one week of sales, while Hockey Allstar Shootout did about 6,000 in three weeks.
- You may notice that there are no Strong Bad games up here. This is consistent with the prevailing trend -- the games only really matter in the Americas (and to a lesser extent the UK and Australia), and each successive episode has sold less than the one before it. Strong Bad Episode 5: 8-bit Is Enough, did less than 4,000 in two weeks on sale in the Americas, most of it in the first day. Perhaps the episodes were too closely spaced for most consumers to be ready to pick up each one as it came out.
- World of Goo, Tetris Party, and My Aquarium have been ranked 1-2-3 every week since November.

- There's a similar effect at work here, with most new games not selling consistently well enough to break into a monthly chart -- no December release is in the top 10 worldwide.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Master System breaks into the top 20 worldwide with a third place showing in the Americas (it also did about 4,000 in a half-week on sale in PAL).
- Secret of Mana also debuted with a half-week on sale in PAL and about 9,000 sales. Though it didn't make the top 10 in any region (it was 17th in the Americas and 11th in both PAL and Japan), it still sold enough for 13th worldwide in December.
- There's no data for other new releases in the America and PAL (they didn't come close to charting), but there is some information available for a couple of games in Japan: Ninja-Kun - Magical Castle Adventure for the NES sold about 2,300 in three weeks (17th for the month), while The Mystery of Atlantis for the NES sold about 2,100 in all four weeks (19th for the month).
- Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros. are both closing in on selling a million each in the Americas alone. The two games have ranked 1-2 every week in the Americas since November.
Worldwide revenues were calculated using an average December exchange rate of $1 = 0.74 € = 90 ¥. With the weaker dollar, worldwide revenues are a bit higher than previously shown.
Thanks to TWRoO and his crew for collecting PAL data, and smbu2000 for collecting Japan data. If you have access to the Nintendo Channel and want to help collect usage data, send a PM to TWRoO if you're in PAL or to me if you're anywhere else in the world.
If there are any games not shown here that you'd like some specific numbers for, let me know in the comments and I'll provide what I can.

I think it will be really tough to make a wii ware million seller. A good mega man 9 style retro mario platformer could do it.
I wonder what the first Wiiware million seller will be...
When is Nintendo going to solve the Memory problem? I want more games but I hate deleting other games. Yes I know I dont have to repay them but still its the fact of having all these games on my system and being able to play them when I want, not having to download it all over again.
5 out of top 20 wiiware games by hudson, good for them :)
wait.. what Secret of mana is released in Europe??
damn.. bye bye for now :-)
damn it where the hell is my Secret Of Mana Euro release?? :-(
@ XiaoMay
Yeah, I downloaded the original Punch Out!! It's aged very well and is my most-played NES game on VC.
The Wii needs to add a hard drive to expand storage for games.
This would allow for more games to be downloaded.
Gamecube and dreamcast games could be downloaded to the Wii.
The Wii ware games would benefit from less of a restrictive restriction on the size Wii ware games can be.
cant believe punch out sold so well... anybody got it ? I liked SNES version better
Yeah that'd be great if nintendo included 1000 points with every wii. That'd really push digital sales, and Third parties would be alot more interested in wii ware.
well they are offering free points for DSware. also they are offering points for getting a friends wii online and including a video showing how to get the most out of wii. unfortunately this is only in japan
Maybe Nintendo should include 2000 Wii points with every Wii sold - that would raise awareness of the Wii Shop and perhaps prove a good long term investment
I almost missed this news item. Glad to see Channel Surfing back in action. I was starting to get worried.
Looks like new downloaders are playing things pretty safe for the holidays. Lots of mega-classics seeing heavy sales.
Less than half of Wii's are online worldwide, and I would estimate less than half of those have ever purchased anything on the Wii Shop Channel. A lot of Nintendo's recent initiatives in Japan have been aimed towards convincing people to take their Wii's online, including the Nintendo Channel itself (offering trailers and DS demos).
@ Steve
I agree. I think most of the purchases are made by older, hardcore Nintendo fans. Most newer Wii owners don't know much of the Wii Shop Channel and online features outside of multiplayer. (personal experience working in retail)
Hmmm... all these numbers seem to be low compared to the actual installed base for the console. I wonder how many unique Wii owners have purchased anything in WiiWare. I bet these purchases are by an even slimmer portion of the Wii public than anyone would care to admit to.
Nintendo needs to think about incentives to get people online and buying software. Since they're already making a healthy profit off the consolesm it certainly wouldn't kill them to include a $10 Nintendo Points card (like they are with the DSi in Japan) to encourage people to go online and buy something.
Hot damn, go Paper Mario GO.
I hope Secret of Mana does well. Not that I think Square will take any kind of positive hint from it at all for Virtual Console. But in the SLIM hope that, if it does in Japan, they might think of releasing Seiken Densetsu 3 for DS like they did Chrono Trigger. Which then might lead to the same game for America...which we never got. And frankly, Seiken Densetsu 3 with local WiFi multiplayer would be one of the best games on the DS. Even being a remake.
Master System titles are cheap, price is king.
Genesis Sonics:
Sonic 1: 230k in Americas, 170k in PAL
Sonic 2: 130k in Americas, 80k in PAL
Sonic 3: 110k in Americas, 90k in PAL
They're also available in Japan but there's no data on them so they haven't sold very much.
all this is free money basically.
not much money goes into putting these titles up(vc not wii ware)
From what I can estimate looking at the past charts.... Sonic the hedgehog on the MegaDrive/Genesis must have sold about 400-500k worldwide by now.... but it depends how accurate the older charts were.
Alex Kidd doesn't have data for PAL yet, so we have no idea what it sold before the Nintendo Channel was started.... but it charts in UK and Australia quite well, so it will have sold ok.
^(edit) Sonic 1 has been out bit longer than I thought.... about 2-3 months in PAL (a little longer in Americas)
The master system games came out more recently..... Sonic 2 only just before this particular chart and Sonic 1 at about the beginning of this chart (late Nov/early Dec)
The Genesis sonic games have all sold far in excess of the MS ones, and are likely hiding not too far below the bottom of the top 10 PAL charts, and not too far below the top 20 World charts.
In fact, we can ask DKII :-)
@DKII.... where abouts are (or do you think) Sonic 1, 2 and 3 for MegaDrive in the charts... and what have they sold in total.
Going by these figures you would think the Master System was a more popular console than the Megadrive. Why can't total figures for AK in Miracle World be found?
Its nice to see world of goo pull in so much revenue. I bet they've made a decent profit. Also lost winds has done very well since it came out. It deserves it. Alien Crush Returns deserves some love too, its the only game with free DLC I believe. .
I'm happy to see these charts again. Also, it seems that World of Goo is going to have some good legs.
Nintendo will be getting close to $100m of revenue - from their VC titles alone. Its not bad - but its not insane either. Its equiv to about 3-4m sales from Mario Kart at retail - minus any infrastructure cost (or roughly the development & release of BBA).
Mind you, they will be making heaps from 3rd-party profit share - Wiiware + VC.
...Zelda seems to be generally a lot less popular than Mario is (although they both sell well). I never bothered to pick up OoT on VC, although I have a couple of Mario games.
I dugg this chart because it makes me happy in the pants.
It just doesn't get any better than Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Tetris, Sonic, and Kirby.
Thank goodness that all of these amazing franchises are still around (and doing well).
You're right, World of Goo had a week and a half of sales. Secret of Mana was the other one with just half a week (four days really, PAL goes through the 29th).
Nice Job Guys... I know all the effort put on those chartz
The Source is evil. Now you TWRoO, you are a saint.
This is great news folks, it means that there are 5 million sellers and may be 8 at some point (Zelda 64, Zelda NES, and Kirby NES)
1 Super Mario Bros. 3 NES Nintendo 98,600 1,563,000 $8,668,600
2 Super Mario Bros. NES Nintendo 92,100 1,667,200 $9,189,300
3 Super Mario World SNES Nintendo 55,500 1,175,200 $10,487,700
4 Super Mario 64 N64 Nintendo 42,700 1,022,100 $11,499,500
6 Mario Kart 64 N64 Nintendo 38,500 1,179,600 $13,232,200
@The Source... Would that be possible? I mean we have no data at all from before the Nintendo Channel released, which was mid-year.
Huzzah.
Not much of a crew anymore, but many thanks to Pimouss and Okr for sticking through, and Kirby007 when he got his Wii fixed.
One thing I am confused about.... you said for both Sonic 2 and World of Goo that they had half a week of sales in PAL, but they didn't release in the same week. I get confused about the exact timescale, but I think Sonic and Secret of Mana released on the 26th December, so should have had 2 days of sales if this is adjusted to the 28th (or 3 days if you are just putting the 3 regions together) While World of Goo released the week before, so should have 9-10 days included.
Now do a yearly ranking
