Nintendo Switch Sells 80,000 Units in 48 Hours in the UK - News

The Nintendo Switch sold 80,000 units in its first 48 hours on sale in the UK, according to GamesIndustry. That is double what the Wii U sold in 2013, however, it is below the 113,000 units the 3DS sold.

The figure is  below the 105,000 units the Wii sold in its first week and below the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which sold sold 250,000 units and 150,000 units, respectively.

Here is how the Switch stacks up against other Nintendo UK launches:

  • Nintendo 3DS - 113,000
  • Nintendo Wii - 105,000
  • Nintendo DS - 87,000
  • Nintendo Switch - 80,000
  • Nintendo GameCube - 69,000
  • Game Boy Advance - 67,000
  • Nintendo Wii U - 40,000

The 3DS beat the Wii in its first week sales in the UK? Colour me surprised. Considering the problems Nintendo has had during this past years, it could have been worse, specially considering this is the UK we're talking about.

Could be better, could be worse.
Generally a console's goal should be a strong launch AND a staggered release library, but Nintendo staggered its release at the cost of a strong launch, which is not ideal.
So I'm eager to see if the numbers reflect that, and while these kinds of sales aren't the best, maybe they'll remain stable throughout the year. 80 thousand here, 80 thousand there, it adds up.

There was limited stock for the wii and in theory it could have done a lot more if stock had been available. 3DS sales went on to collapse and required a big price cut to boost sales back up to reasonable levels. Still a fair amount of stock available in UK of Switch but not everywhere. Hard to know where to place it. Seems a reasonable launch but its after the launch that numbers are more interesting, will they collapse or will there be some momentum. You have to factor in Zelda as well. An absolutely amazing launch game.
