7th Gen vs 8th Gen - Aligned Sales Comparison – February 2016 Update - Sales

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

 

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation. After closing the gap slightly in November it has grown for three straight months. Poor Wii U sales compared to the Wii is the main reason the 8th gen is behind. The gap increased by 698,980 units.

The 7th generation home consoles in its first 28 months sold 84.55 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 68.08 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by 16.34 million units.

This second chart is comparing aligned handheld sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the DS and PSP combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The 8th generation has fallen 1.68 million units behind the 7th generation during the month of February. The current gap sits at 76.76 million units.

The 7th generation handhelds in its first 50 months sold 142.89 million units, which is more than double the 8th generation. The 8th generation handhelds have sold 66.13 million units.

You guys need to fix the 8th gen handheld numbers, 3DS (58.8m) and PS Vita (13.6m) add up to 72.4 mill, not 66.1. Still a huge gap though.

Handhelds are dead; Consoles are still suffering "Wii Deflation".
