Ken Levine Discusses Character Development in His Next Project - News

In a recent interview with GameInformer, BioShock creator Ken Levine discussed the importance of a strong and interesting main character in his currently untitled upcoming project.

When asked about the narrative experience that Levine was aiming for with his new project, he responded with:

“The whole system that I came up with and that we’re developing is based upon the fact that to make an interesting character, you have to have a character who has a bunch of passions, wants, and needs. The player now has the ability to facilitate those wants or needs or go against those wants or needs or ignore those wants or needs. The reason I think the system is going to work is because it’s a very organic way to look at a character. It’s a quite systemic game. The system we’re in, the character’s feelings about you change, they go up and down. But the heart of a character is still wants and needs, and that makes it no different than anything I’ve ever written before.”

The interview also goes on to discuss how the title will be influenced much more heavily by your choices and how NPCs react to you, as well as how to make characters more believable and authentic. It appears as though this next project will be even more provocative than the BioShock titles, and that's something that I personally can't wait to see more of.

I think the original Bioshock is a timeless masterpiece, however Bioshock Infinite is overwrought, self-absorbed and boring. Not sure what to expect from this next project.

I like Levines ideas but I think he's a much better game designer/writer/producer than director. I hope he lets someone else direct this next game.
