The Last of Us Movie Will Make Changes, but Remains Faithful to the Game - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 January 2015 / 6,961 Views

The director for the game The Last of Us Neil Druckmann is working with Sony to write the movie based on the video game. He stated that the movie will make some changes, but it will still remain faithful to the source material.

"Pretty faithful to the game. There are some big changes, but the tone and what the story's trying to say is pretty faithful to the game," said Druckmann in an interview with GameInformer, and transcribed by GameSpot.

The script for the movie is coming along and the second draft is already complete. The production team has done a table read and is currently looking at different actors.

Make a lot of changes! Why would I want to see what I've already played?

Changes are inevitable, it's a different medium. The central theme will still be the growing relationship between Joel and Ellie. One of the big changes might be, for instance, no Bill. Bill is not essential to either the central plot or Joel and Ellie's relationship.

I think I'll stick with the games. The story in the last of us only accounted for 30 percent of it's greatness. Graphics, combat and stealth made up the other 70 percent. Plus they will hire actors that have no resemblance to Joel or Ellie and that will ruin the whole film.

It's been changed to a film about the xfactor. The finalists will be known as the last of us.

It will now star Bruce Willis fighting aliens from the top of a skyscraper.

The word "changes" scares me a lot. The story is perfect and doesn't need to be changed. Let's hope this film will break the curse of "bad video game films."

The word "big" scares me more.

I think Silent Hill (2006) pretty much broke that curse...

Well, I've lost almost all interest in this movie. When you hear "there are big changes, but the tone is like the game," run for the hills. That, in Hollywood speak, means we could have just slapped a different name on the movie and you wouldn't even know it was based on the game.

This is why movies based on video games almost always suck. Instead of actually liking the game and it's story (which many try to BS us and say they do), and make a movie that's truly faithful to it, they tell some generic story they want to. Then, they slap the name of the game on the film for name recognition and to bring in a few fans of the game into the theatre.

"Changes" include a black Ellie and a gay Joel. Or something to that extent. LOL Bet?

Considering Ellie's best friend was black, and Joel being gay would mean he would had to have adopted his daughter, I'm going to say probably not :P

I dunno... A lot of gay men have kids. Right?

I wouldn't mind "changes" like this. Hell, if a black actress can pull Ellie off, I'll prefer her over a bad white actress.

I think they will make Tess a major character from the beginning to end, because there is some kind of a legal obligation that every Hollywood movie has to have a romance subplot and Ellie is too young to grind.
