Iwata: Smaller Graphics Gap Between Wii U and Other Next Gen Consoles - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 04 July 2012 / 6,408 Views

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata was asked about the gap in power between the Wii U and Sony and Microsoft's next generation consoles, during their general meeting to the shareholders. Iwata assured the shareholders that the gap won't be as big as the Wii compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"We cannot promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multi-platform software for eternity, but we can at least assure you that the Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms, developers could expect very different graphic capabilities of generating HD-applicable high-resolution graphics," said Iwata.

"Other companies might launch a next-generation console with more power, but...the difference between the Wii U and such console will be as drastic as what you felt it was between the Wii and the other consoles because there will be fewer and fewer differentiators in graphics," Iwata continued. "Naturally some consumers are very sensitive about such a small difference in graphics so that we will make efforts to make the most of the performance of the Wii U to keep up with technological innovations and not to make the system out-of-date soon."

It is obvious that PS4 and Xbox3 will not have High-End-Tech as PS360 had.

Neither Microsoft or Sony are looking forward to lose millions again as they did with the expensive PS360 tech that only few gamers wanted to pay the money for in the first years.

And the obvious difference between SD and HD visuals is not there anymore. Most gamers don't even see much difference between High-End-PC and PS360 graphics and Xbox3/PS4 will have much less power than actual High-End-PCs.

@ryazuki57 well observed...and the reason the audience wasn't there, is because there were no 'core' 3rd party games being released for the wii. 3rd parties didn't 'desert' the wii, they never bothered in the first place.

Isn't this just common-sense? I don't think that Sony or Microsoft can afford to have another PS3..

But the most important thing for me is the games. And, so far, it looks as though Nintendo are trying to get the 3rd parties. And that's good.

"Naturally some consumers are very sensitive about such a small difference in graphics so that we will make efforts to make the most of the performance of the Wii U to keep up with technological innovations and not to make the system out-of-date soon." Does he mean enhancement chips like the Super Nintendo cartridges used or software routines like the Genesis used.

Iwata clearly hasn't seen Agni's Philosophy. We beraly know about WiiU's specs, so how could he know about PS4 and Xbox3? Furthermore, power is not the reason third parties deserted Wii, it's because the audience wasn't there. And from what we saw at E3, it is going to be the same for WiiU.

They deserted the Wii because it was a Nintendo console. All we ever got from decent 3rd party devs was "market test games" that were onrails shooters.

Agni's requirements weren't also revealed. It was certainly running on a high end GPU, such as NVidia 680 with a huge amount of memory. I doubt Sony and Microsoft will be able to sell a machine capable of running at that quality level, unless they sell it for a very high price, which seems they will avoid this time.

I am pretty sure the PS4 and the NextBox will be more powerful than the Wii U. However, I don't think the difference will be quite striking.

nintendo guy says next sony/microsoft consoles won't be much better graphically, microsoft guy say wii u will be effectively a 360 which means we need no new xbox or ps because 720/ps4 will be effectively a 360/ps3?
