Sony has announced they have shipped 1.8 million PlayStation Vitas for the last fiscal year which ended March 31 of this year. Sony projects it will ship 10 million for the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2013.

"The last year, 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe [were sold]. And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start," said Kaz Hirai, Sony CEO. "For a game platform, like Vita, the software is the key to success -- how good the software is, that is the key to business success. We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business that is the basic line. Vis-a-vis Vita, at this moment, there is no decline or lack of motivation as a portable platform. This is a very important product indeed for us, and therefore we still have a very high motivation to develop this further. There is no change."

He did mention that the Vita does need bigger games that will help move more systems. "Software and services must be strengthened,” he added. “In other words, the collaborative approach is very important, so is third-party. And from first-party studios, the titles will be presented one after the other, so please look at them and give your evaluation based on them."

Which means PS Vita is probably overtracked here with 1,9M as there are probably a couple of hundred thounsand PSVita on shelves right now.

Are they counting Canada, Mexico, Latin America or other countries? Seems strange to list areas as oppose to saying worldwide. Regardless it's a slow start, but knowing this would help with our tracking.

I think the PS-Vita had plenty of games to play at launch, but didn't have much flow of new software preceding launch. So I have just been going back to less desirable offerings. I don't even need it to be big AAA games. My favorite games on the PS-Vita so far have been titles like Escape Plan, Mutant Blobs Attack, Plants vs Zombies, Stardrone Extreme, Super Stardust Delta, Sumioni: Demon Arts, and even Pinball Arcade.
