$99 Xbox 360 with 2 Year Subscription Confirmed - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 07 May 2012 / 6,235 Views

The rumored $99 Xbox 360 with a two year Xbox Live Gold subscription at $15 per month has been confirmed. It is a 4GB Xbox 360 that comes bundled with Kinect. The deal is available at Microsoft Stores and appears to be currently for the US only.

It is a promotional offer and it may not last forever. This could be a test for the next generation Xbox to see if this model will be successful or not. By the end of the two years it would cost a total of $459, compared to the $419 it would cost to buy the console, for $299, and two years of Xbox Live Gold, at $60 per year, separately.

This is the type of thing I fear. Gaming is only going to get worse...

Have to agree. In comparison to my own gaming set-up, it is a terrible deal.

So.. all in all, you're paying over $400 for a six-year-old system? What a deal!

Perhaps is the right time, to Microsoft offer xbox360's inside cereal boxes (like corn flakes)...

Honestly at first the idea is shocking, but really its like getting a car loan. You pay less up front so you can afford it now, but end up paying more in the long run. Definitely an interesting idea.

I don't see what the silly whining is for in these comments. It is no different to buying mobile phone plan with the "free" phone. many people, just like with the mobile phone contracts, are too dumb or too poor to pay upfront. It is a legitimate and good business practise and gets in buyers that would otherwise have to do without.

People will buy it because most wont think of the total cost but instead think, oh only $15 a month. A reason why people also pay over the odds when signing up for a cell phone contract.

This is an interesting approach. The problem with selling consoles late in the generation is that the company selling them barely gets any profit (ala the late Ps2 sales), due to low software revenue, which is what the companies rely on (the low software revenue is due to lower price for older games, and easier piracy). Nintendo has gone with the philosophy of just killing off their support for old machines for this reason, and Microsoft did the same last gen.
If this works, they could keep their consoles going with support for a far longer period, and still earn nice amounts of money from them I'm all for this.

The only country where you can find enough idiots to have success witch such an Idea-USA.

I hope people will realize it is better to save the money and wait a little bit and buy a new Wii U,PS4 or 720 with a Kinect2 in a few month than wasting so much money for an old peace of noisy crap with a lousy Kinect1 sensor.

Agree with chuckyj1, Microsoft is only giving you an option, if you don't like it don't buy it.

How's it going to make gaming worse? It's just another way to buy a console...I think this idea sucks so if I buy a console I will just buy it outright. Some people may not mind paying only $15 a month even if in the long run you end up paying more. This plan is not for me, but ruin gaming? Don't like it don't buy the console like this. This will not make gaming worse. $70 or $80 games will make gaming worse. Not this subscription plan.

@moonhero, this has nothing to do with gaming this is business end of the market and the needed monitezation to be competitive against the growing ipad casual market. So far MS has done the best job out of the big three of facing this challenge.
