The Japan Preview: 11/2 Edition (GTA>LBP, DS>PSP, PS3>360, and more!) - News

Summary:

This is the week of launches we’ve all been waiting for: The DSi, Little Big Planet, and the two versions of Grand Theft Auto IV. In reality, there was also a high profile DS release to accompany the hardware refresh, Valkyrie Profile. Grand Theft Auto IV also looks like it is a much more important title in Japan than Little Big Planet, as even the Xbox 360 version of the game nearly outsold the PS3 exclusive. Nonetheless, the mini runs of PSP and Xbox 360 over their rivals – DS and PS3 – appear to be over in Japan on the new releases for the week. Future weeks should be interesting as well, with Animal Crossing, Chrono Trigger, Mobile Suit Gundam, Last Remnant, and White Knight Story likely to provide small to substantial hardware boosts for their respective platforms based on historical and preorder data.

Key Points:

-    Software Sales topped 600,000 units this week in the preliminary data, an increase in volume of over 100,000 units from the previous week.

-     The DSi launch, like the PSP 3000 launch before it, does not appear to have elevated older software significantly. However, as of November 2, the DSi had only been available for two days, so it is a bit early to judge yet.

-    GTA4 is actually the top debut for a PS3 game since Metal Gear Solid 4 released back in mid June to sales of over 450,000 units. That drought goes a long way to explaining PS3 sales at ~4,000 in recent weeks

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending November 2, 2008.

Software by Platform Breakdown:

Wii Software – Wii Music and an Animal game (not that Animal game) from Marvelous were the only Wii titles to chart this week. The Animal title debuted to sales of 10,000 units while Wii Music dropped to 26,000 units. Holiday sales, which were very kind to Wii Fit last year, should largely determine whether Wii Music can join the holy trinity of Wii ___ million selling games in Japan (Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports). Animal Crossing, debuting later in November, should have no issues hitting 1 million units, as the title sold nearly 1 million even on Game Cube, and stands at 5m on DS just in Japan. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 20,000 to 30,000 unit range this week.

PS3 Software – Grand Theft Auto IV is easily the best PS3 debut in months in Japan. The game sold nearly 130,000 units in its first week, meaning about 1 in 20 PS3 owners in Japan bought it week one. Little Big Planet had a good debut too, but excluding the hardware bundles, the game sold about 55,000 units. With the holidays approaching, the game should top 100,000 units easily, but getting beyond 150,000 units is a bit of a long shot at this point. Expect PS3 hardware sales to rise into the 15,000 to 25,000 unit range this week, on the GTA and the Little Big Planet hardware bundle-boost.

Xbox 360 Software – Grand Theft Auto IV also charted on Xbox 360, at about 40,000 units. Expect Xbox 360 hardware sales to rise into the 8,000 to 12,000 unit range on the GTA debut.

PS2 Software – PS2 continues to be a gold mine for niche hits. Four niche titles charted in the preliminary data for PS2, with Thunder Force VI topping out at about 10,000 units for the week. Expect PS2 hardware sales to remain in the 5,000 to 9,000 unit range.

PSP Software – PSP software remains fairly low. Only three titles charted. One was a cheaper edition of Monster Hunter Portable 2G. The other two games were Yuusha no Kuse and Macross Ace Frontier. Looking ahead, the next big release will be Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam later in the month. Expect PSP hardware sales to continue falling this week on both the DSi launch, and the growing distance (by time) from the PSP 3000 launch, into the 45,000 to 65,000 unit range.

DS Software – Eight DS titles charted this week, seven of which sold over 10,000 units. Valkyrie Profile was the top seller and it was clearly launched to take advantage of the DSi hoopla. It came in at about 121,000 units although there is some evidence this figure could be as low as 80,000 given some shipment irregularities in the DSi launch. Rhythm Heaven Gold, Wagamama Fashion and Pokemon Platinum continued to sell between 20,000 and 40,000 units this week. The new Chocobo game fell into that range as well. Kirby, Chrono Trigger, and Professor Layton should continue pushing DS hardware sales in Japan in the upcoming weeks. For now though, expect DS hardware sales to sky rocket on the DSi launch, from about 25,000 last week into the 115,000 to 165,000 unit range.

171k DSi + 30k DSL, should have DS around 200k and it will only go UP until Christmas

 • 0
ZuZayLi (on 04 November 2008)

Famitsu says 171k DSi sold in two days. I think it's a really great number considering DS has almost become at saturation in Japan.
I'm expecting 50+k sales from Rhythm Tengoku Gold this week.

I hate fanboys who diss games but sorry LBP sold much less than I expected in Japan. It seems Japanese PS3 owners are a hard bunch to please. Well done to GTA4 - it sold even better than I expected and is now quite well known over there!

Wii Music dropping fast and while not a Wii fit should still have legs and be in the charts in 52 weeks from now LOL! You guys who think the Wii is dying are crazy...you can't be number 1 and be dying...slowing maybe!

GTA4 it´s a surprise, i never thinked god sales for it.

PD: ¿Why Nintendo can´t make more DSI? I think their real intention it´s sale a lot of downlodable content.

 • 0
Bruno Muñoz (on 03 November 2008)

LBP didn't sell too well but no way it bombed.

By the way, talking about western platformers. Did you know that Crash Bandiccoot 2 and 3 were almost million sellers?

 • 0
SaviorX (on 03 November 2008)

Well, I expected the DSi to perform a little better, but it is still high if you think about it. LBP wasn't huge, just like I thought. The scrambling damage control for the game is pretty funny to read, reminds me of when I tried to defend Disaster: Day of Crisis.

As for Square Enix not supporting the Wii,it makes no sense. They have the 2nd best-selling 3rd party game under MGS4 and it is on the Wii. The game was mediocre anyways, so if they put in a REAL effort this time around, they could quite possibly outsell MGS4. But hey, I'm just a bystanding gamer.

A lot of people said LBP would be a turn-around for the PS3 in Japan. Well it was not. It didn't meet expectations, it wasn't even close. What about the LBP could reach 10 million-predictions? It is a bomb for me.

@trestres

I guess since wont SE come out and say that a game is canceled I'll have to take your word for it.

Damn them for just not saying it.

DSi is doing better than I expected, I'm hoping that Nintendo was right about reaching another new audience... I'm sure it did reach them I'm just not certain how large that audience is.

Wii Music may be getting more attention than others believe, Nintendo pushed the title out there which probably means they have something else in the works.

It just seems wierd to split the marketing pipe lines with DSi.. or the title could be gunning for kids... which would make it a holiday seller.

LBP wasn't expected to do good in japan.
LBP is a western platform, so can't compare to galaxy cause that made by japanese

You guys are like the sports announcers in games. where they will be like "Player is teh first person since 1948 to have 9 carries for over 3 yards and have a punt return for a touchdown while also having a tackle" I love how they throw in such random shit to make it seem like he is doing a new record or you are seeing somethig amazing

Quartz (on 03 November 2008)

I was personally expecting 250k life time sales of LBP in Japan. I didn't believe from the start it would be to Japans taste. I think it will have 'reasonable' sales in America and 'good' sales in the UK. I could be wrong though.

There are several posts in the thread that talk about sales and none that talk about huge being anything else. If you want to take their posts like that, then you may, I just wanted to point out the thread. And yes, I did read the thread. Most of the people who disagreed used MGS4 as the reason why. wow my post saying LBP sales were not that great got deleted! Not sure wether to wave a clenched fist muttering the words "damn them pesky kids" or laugh that it had to be removed!

Fable II was probably quite close to 1.5m though if you think about it. If it sold 750k in 3 days in the states a lone it might have done ok in the rest of the world. I would at least expect 1m for 1st week or so. Can't really see LBP getting near those figures.

 • 0
Euphoria14 (on 03 November 2008)

@DirtyP2002

Stop trying to create damage that is not there.

If it considered a bomb, considering it's circumstances, then so is the entire 360 RPG onslaught attempt.

Let us see here, Western developed game. Possibly doing 150k sales, even more if the game has legs, which it could very well have.

Japanese developed JRPGs, highest LTD sales of 200k (Blue Dragon).

Got anymore make believe damage?

@Zen

"EVERY-SINGLE-BODY"?

Link? Last I checked in the prediction thread only Crazzy man expected 100K first day and 500K first week. Since when does he speak for everyone?

If we go this way is every current 360 game a failure compared to "every-single-bodies" predictions? Someone has Selnor quoted with outrageous 360 first day and first week sales. Why not bring that up sometimes and say it counts for all of us too?

I just love how that work. :-)

 • 0

OK, let's wait for Banjo Kazooie:Nuts and Bolts (another cute western IP) to be released on the 360 in Japan. If the sales for that game, scaled up to take account of the smaller 360 install base, aren't demonstrably worse than LBP, then LBP did not live up to the hype.

DirtyP2002: So? Most people didn't expect GTA4 to do as well as it did in Japan. When a game is really, really big in America and Europe, it sometimes spreads over to Japan (Halo and GTA are examples of this). A lot of you have some unrealistic expectations and need to just calm down. We're talking about a platformer from a western developer here. How well have those done on the Wii in Japan? 360? Come back to me with some good numbers so we can compare.

 • 0
DirtyP2002 (on 03 November 2008)

@Euphoria14 So it is doing like Halo3 in Japan... on a MUCH MUCH greater Userbase than xbox 1 year ago in Japan. u can't deny it, it bombed in Japan.

Oyvoyvoyv (on 03 November 2008)

DMJ makes a very good point.

Wii Music and LBP are both games that should be very happy to break 500K. Both are very western centered games. LBP is a platformer, which Super Mario Galaxy has proven is a practically dead genre over there, and Wii Music is a console music game. As far as I know, no other music console game has sold 100K in Japan.

@ Euphoria.

That's what I figured. I'm not certain I ever saw outlandishly high Japan sales predictions for this game, or any high predictions for this at all. It's funny how everyone can say this is disappointing or not expected, yet no one can link us to a thread where everyone said "LBP in Japan, 500k first week!!11!!". lolxD.

Using reasoning like "LBP will be huge" which started as a joke, as a reason for it being "disappointing" in Japan is also failure too. "huge" doesn't have a number tacked to it. Knowingly so, so that this wouldn't happen. "huge" is different for each person. For me, 100-150k would be "huge" for this game in Japan given it's a western game and a new IP. Considering the highest selling PS3 game in Japan is around 700k (MGS4), I don't think that wold be too bad for a new western IP at all.

But oh well, crow will be served soonly.

 • 0
Dallinor (on 03 November 2008)

@ZenFolder "You know who expected it to sell more than this? Everybody. Every-single-body."

Not me. I actually thought it might completely flop in Japan. I think 100k for a brand new IP on the PS3 in Japan is actually quite good.

@Selnor 2.5 million is niche?

Euphoria14 (on 03 November 2008)

@DMeisterJ

Do not worry. They are taking the predictions of 1-4 members of this site and uses it as a generalization fo everyone who predicted Japanese sales of this game.

We all know (well, those of us who actually read the prediction thread) that majority of the members here predicted 20-40K first day and 60-70K first week (including bundles).

Just ignore them.

People wanna claim damage control? These people are trying to create damage.

ToV is also a Japanese game while LBP is a Western game. ToV is a JRPG while LBP is a platform.

It looks worse for ToV.

Nice try. Also remember this is just a guesstimate by "The Source". If this game has legs it can go beyond 150k.

woopah (on 03 November 2008)

i dont see why DSi bombed? it looks to have sold round about the same as PSP3000 (possibly more but probably a bit less) in half the time. hopfully the new sofware should keep the numbers high. hasnt it beaten the launch of the DSL?

also i dont think LBP bombed. while not a particularly western game i never though it was going to do as well as big franchises such as animal forest and wii____.

wii hardware is wayyy too low.i really need animal forest right now. the big problem is that with the exception of tales of... all of its announced RPGs are new IPs. i dont expect any blockbuster hits

 • 0
DMeisterJ (on 03 November 2008)

Can someone please tell me what was expected of LBP in Japan?

Really? I never even used Japan in my prediction of 3-5 million lifetime, as it's a new IP western game in a foreign market, that has little Japanese appeal. At least from my perspective. Personally, I've never made a point about LBP being huge in Japan, just that maybe this week it would outsell the Wii (it could since the hardware predictions for PS3 and Wii overlap, but probably not), but most of LBPs sales will be from EU and NA. But I suppose that people are seeing things that aren't there, again, concerning LBP just to make the game look bad. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

Did the new 80Gb PS3 launch this week? If so, the PS3 boost was actually a lot smaller than expected. I thought PS3 numbers had dwindled in recent weeks in anticipation of the new SKU and the LBP bundles. I guess demand just isn't there. Let's see what WKC can do.

Nice boost to 360 from GTAIV. Maybe it can compete now with PS3 in Japan.

It's 200 000 DSi for the two first days and 100 000 after.

 • 0
Daxter210 (on 03 November 2008)

For me, LBP debut is very good for Japan market, because we must not forget that this is a West game (apart GTA all games developed in West sell very little in Japan) and also LBP is a new IP which must be known in Japan.

 • 0
ZuZayLi (on 03 November 2008)

Rhythm Tengoku Gold, with the end of the year, christmas etc... can be a 2million seller easily. The 2 things that will make me not buy a DSi are the low battery life + a "only" 0.3 mpixel camera.
I'm disappointed about Chocobo. Square Enix, besides of remakes, needs to do new games. This one is %99 the same as the Wii version.

 • 0
bbsin (on 03 November 2008)

 • 0
papflesje (on 03 November 2008)

Let's hope you are wrong TheSource, because I would be disappointed if I were sony, I'd expect at least a bit more, and perhaps a bigger HW boost. Unless this creates a permanent boost of the PS3 but I don't see that happening either.

 • 0
Hyruken (on 03 November 2008)

Have to agree with others on LBP. There is no way of getting around it the game bombed harder then any other high profile game for 2008.
50k un-bundled with near 3 million PS3's to sell to is not "solid" that is only 1 copy sold to every 60.000 that is awful.
There will be a lot of new PS3 owners due to the new bundles but if we are to expect it to be a 15k week for the PS3 that is also bad. So say every one of those was a 80GB LBP bundle that is still only 65k sold!
The figures for the rest of the world will be very interesting.

 • 0
Dazkarieh (on 03 November 2008)

@ DMeisterJ... LOLOL

Wii is failing, is a fad, look, it's already drowning... hehehe... the usual.

If LBP really sold this, it's about half of the sales of Wii Music 1st week, that title that is doing very bad...

 • 0
Oyvoyvoyv (on 03 November 2008)

Interesting!

GTA IV combined might beat Mario Kart Wii WW this week!
Ps3 should stop the 8 weeks of straight losses and win WW this week.

I'm kinda disapointed in DSi though, as Nintendo themselves said they expected 200-300K.

Pokemon Platinum looks like it isn't going to sell 2.5M, meaning that it will not beat Yellow for the best selling 3rd Pokemon game on the handheld.

Considering how low the Wii is, Wii Music isn't doing that bad, I believe it will still have a change at 500K in Japan by the end of the year. That's not bad. In the long run, I'd say it should outsell Twilight Princess there.

So I'm pretty confident that Wii Music will do well. Not Wii Sports, Play or Fit style, but honestly, who expected that?

The DSi you have to remember, was only available for two days as of November 2 in Japan. PSP 3000 had four days to push PSP to 170k or whatever it was.

As for Wii/PS3 - both are fairly low this week, but Animal Crossing should provide an extended boost and PS3 isn't going to drop to 4k for the rest of the year I'd say.

LBP is an abomination. It does things no game should ever be allowed to do. It's like Alia of the Knife, and it will be huge.

I expected much more from the DSi! Man, It's the DS, the DS !!!

Very good for gtaIV, good for LPB and good for PS3. It's in the wii range now!

@ZenfoldorVGI

I called the LBP would be around 50k and not be as big as many were saying. WKS is the next game to give PS3 a big boost.
It'll be interesting to see the boost that PS3 and 360 had this week.

360 could be closer to PS3 next week on the new bundle.
What makes you think LBP will be huge in other territories?
The sheer hype, the fact that it gets one perfect review score after another and the cuteness factor. It will be interesting to see if LBP also has mass-market appeal. We will see. Although I also could imagine that this is a game that will sell for a while as people generate cool levels etc.

Nice preview, but I'll wait for the real numbers before discussing - especially hardware.

If those LBP numbers are right, so far its a disappointment - based on the hype anyway.

Global LBP sales next week may determine the short-term fate of Sony - MS seems to be doing really well (for now anyway).
