2.5 Mil for 360 and PS3 combined on Day 1 sounds kinda low. How many did Halo 3 sell on Day 1? These are two platforms we are talking about. Guess we can only know from the official news release from R*.

60:40 sounds about right. MS PR claimed 2:1 but 3:2 is more in line considering GTA was a PS-only franchise.

How many weeks will NPD cover in Apr?

kbebee : sorry, but anyone who ISN'T surprised that GTA IV has a higher attach rate for the PS3 has an objectivity issue. MS fanboys are gonna say "nyah we sold more". Sony fanboys "nyah higher attach rate!"... but both consoles are established enough in this gen that developers will prefer to publish to as opposed to maintain exclusivity (without a huge cash buyout).

This is good news for both companies, for Rockstar, and ultimately gamers regardless of the console of choice.

Even 1 GTA IV sale for the 360 is 1 more than they had with San Andreas. 1 more sale of GTA IV on the 360 means 1 less on the PS3. The "attatch rates" will even themselves out soon for USA. The PS3 won't do more than 5-6 mil due to the fact that once you have the game there is no need to buy it again. 360 will do somewhere between 8-9 mil. (Same concept) Thats roughly 1/2 billion that Sony will not get since it is not theirs anymore. I'd say that is some serious damage.

I almost feel sorry for GTA. Phenomenal seller and unbelievable scores. Would be game of the decade if it came out in any other year. But not this year, it may blow past Brawl/Kart/WiiFit/fall releases but I really can't see it getting GOTY over [b]Spore[/b].

That aside, wow, amazing sales for a game on two different consoles. Microsoft did good work paying R* to not have it exclusive. They just prevented 2 million people from buying a PS3 this week. 0_o

you may think that the microsoft userbase is so much smaller, but i have about 4 freinds who have 360's but dont buy games for them. They only buy games for their ps3's

Bad news or Microsoft.....Simple math says there's a problem coming for them.

US Xbox units - 11.6 million (71% share between MS and Sony...wii not included)
US PS3 units - 4.7 million (29% share between MS and Sony...wii not included)

GTA Sales:
Xbox:60% (down 11% from install base)
PS3:40% (up 11% from install base)

With many factors that could be at play, the PS3 sold 280,000 more units than it should have based on userbase in the USA. You can say that PS3 owners were more avid buys of the game, but the probability is that they actually sold units to make that number......150k - 200k perhaps. This would not be a good sign for MS because if this is correct you will see many more PS3 sales in the coming months for GTA4 as well as MGS4. If that momentum carries through the year into the Christmas season, MS's lead will be swallowed quicker than most analysts predicted.

We initially had the same amount of GTAs on both consoles due to shipment error (thankfully). First day sales were reflected by the 60-40 ratio. As we speak today (thursday), we sold out the initial 360 shipment and PS3 GTA still had about 47% of stocks. Thankfully, we received a new 360 GTA batch at noon.

As far as console sales for our store only? Didn't sell much hardware for either console. PS3 did sell more hardware than 360 since GTA tuesday, but we're talking about one digit sales (between 5 to 9 consoles)

Its only been one day. alot of you guys are jumping the gun with these attach ratio comparisons. It will take some time to get a better overall look. But MS is doing well they just took a bite into Sony's biggest pie. So in reality Sony will never see its old GTA numbers. And for MS its a win win situation. Damage control would probably sum it up best on MS account.

Yeah, I think Microsoft is pretty damn happy about this. Imagine if they hadn't managed to make this multi-platform. This would have been an incredible point for Sony if they hadn't. But as I see it, Microsoft did very well. They have so many different titles selling incredibly well that it is hard to choose which one to get. The story is much different on Sony's console. Also, and I speak from experience here, is the effect blu-ray is having on the PS3. If someone were in the market for a blu-ray player, they would be an idiot not to get the PS3. It has a hard-drive, wireless, multi-core processor, gpu, lots of ram, and can be be updated to the latest blu-ray profiles. None of the other players on the market have these features. I just got a 42 inch LCD and was in the market for a player but decided I didn't like how things looked. Either Sony is losing a ton of money on the PS3 per sale(I doubt it) or all other players are bending everyone over and taking them for a ride. I will stick to hd downloads over Live until the prices come down. Once people get their PS3 blu-ray player they decide they might as well purchase a game since it also plays them. What else do they have to choose from besides the biggest game of the year? Microsoft is already making a profit on the 360 and is in no rush for a price cut.

All this talk about games like GTA4 and DMC4 now becoming known as a 360 franchise is ridiculous. The games didn't suddenly disappear from the PS3 lineup, those games are now known as MULTIPLATFORM franchises, get it straight people.
Same goes for people stating that GTA is still known as a PS franchise.

Actually, I think that ratio is incorrect. It will no doubt be reflected in NPD data. It's not going to be 60/40 at all. I highly doubt 60/40 day 1 as well. Seems way too close from everything I've seen out there to date about reports of what stores were selling, most were 3 to 1 from everything I'v read.

Wait 60/40. That actually sounds about right and will probably be relected some where close to that come NPD, maybe a little bigger actually. Although the actual gap between the sales will become even bigger over time because of the hardware base. I certainly do not think this is pushing much HW for either on this month. They will both get a bump, but I do not expect them to get that much. It will be interesting to see if T2 releases there own day 1 numbers.

Not to take away from the PS3's phenomonal attach rate, but having less consoles does give you an advantage in attach rate in cases like this. Still, 20% attach rate on DAY 1???!!!!!! Holy ****

well, GTA always was playstation franchise, no wonder. =)

Moreover, there is a good chance, that after one month, GTA4 sold on PS3 > GTA4 sold on x360. =)

Based on the above figures, there are about ~16m 360 owners and ~10m PS3 owners who dont have GTA4 yet. Legs will be better on 360 because very simply there are more people to sell to. Im not even factoring the impact of the DLC content and the fact that GTA4's main market is NA.

60% of sales were for the 360, I thought it would be at least 70%...who'd buy a watered down version which costs more in retail?.
but the Playstation was the home for GTA games, notice I said WAS!....the same for Devil May Cry.. but the 360 is leading those sales too.
strange thing is, why do people hate the 360? if its doing so well and selling more games than the PS3, should we be thankful that we have a healthy market?

The numbers are ...frustrating (for other publishers). And guys! It is really silly to make your calculations according to the install bases considering this is THE LAUNCH DAY FOR THE BIGGEST GAME OF THIS GENERATION. The ...legs will likely be around 2:1.

That difference is more than good for the PS3 version considering the userbase difference in NA.

I'm glad to see it sell so well, more than deserved. This is the most epic thing I have ever played. Hopefully it's even being undertracked and sold more on day 1.

Anyway that 6 million worldwide for week 1 will likely be broken soon and easily.

I predict 5 million in NA alone for week 1.

What's more important now is how many consoles GTA sold, hopefully a lot of both. The next GTAs will only be bigger.

I know I didn't get it on day one, simply because I had stuff to do. I've got it, but I'm playing Viking and other games, so I'm not like...gotta have it the minute it's launched. 360 has lots of options, so I've got the game, but I jsut wasn't in a rush to get it on day one. How does that factor into legs, time will tell...Also, you basically get it free at bestbuy when you buy a 360, so I'm not sure that figure has been broken out yet. As to those say, considering 360 install base blah blah blah...it'll point to htis VERY resident fact...considering Playstation franchise install base, PS3 isn't doing so hot against 360 and Wii...

it was as I expected! the ratio of GTA players on the current gen consoles matches the ratio of the amount form ps2 meaning that it will sell about 4.5 to 5 mill on the current install base and then continue to grow at a nice pace just like all other games do

Nice sales for GTA, I knew it was top heavy but wow, so it's probably going to wrap up the month at 4 million,
by month 3 about 6 million and after about a year hit around 7 million, my hope is around 8 million though =(.

But what exactly defines a casual gamer - am I missing something. Time to wiki the definition.

I knew something was strange when the hardware numbers were so low for GTA4 release... and i guess the Wii was once again low in supply that week. Well, that sucks. Grand Theft Auto has had a notorious history for having fantastic legs, so it's hard to say how the PS3 version will do in the long run, and how factors like the MGS4 bundle will prompt new owners to pick up another game eventually (and GTA IV is a good bet). However, considering install bases and all, and that it's already been sold to 20% of all PS3 owners, it's probably going to slow down for the next upcoming weeks faster than the 360.

Since 360 versions tend to have longer legs and a much larger userbase to get through before dropping off, I doubt the US ration will stay at 3:2 when the NPDs come through.
