After a generation of sequels and totally uninspiring titels like NFS, Fifa and Harry Potter. EA steps up to the plate and brings us some originality! EA's new direction is the result of a slowdown in sales of their top-tier franchises like Need For Speed, James Bond and Fifa. And luckily, their new direction has finally paid off!
Bringing you something totally unique, something never done before on a console. EA brings you parkours, next-generation style. And it doesn't even do a bad job at it(!). Mirror's Edge received tons of hype at the E3 electronic entertainment expo. Winning most original game of the show awards from multiple sites like IGN and Gamespot! Resulting in a hype that, sadly, could never be fulfilled by it's gameplay!
The idea behind Mirror's Edge is quite simple. Take the first-person perspective we all know from 1st-person shooters. And combine it with free-running. Or Parkours, as it's officially called. Make a vivid city and create tons of paths that you can take in order to complete your objectives. A great idea, and no-one ever tried it before. That's a win-win situation, right?!...
As I already said, the hype-train was up and running and everyone was talking about how awesome Mirror's Edge played and looked! The graphics were so simple, yet so beautiful, so lively, so full of pure art! But when reviews started to poor in, it didn't actually seem like the game was worth the wait. It received a metacritic score of around the 7's. The game worked at certain moments, yet the 'flow' wasn't there. The 'X-factor' was missing. So it was not the ground-breaking game that people had hoped for! Although the game was still very enjoyable, because of the not-so-high scores and the big hype. The game was considered a 'flop' saleswise, reaching ONLY just over a million combined on the X360 and the PS3.
Although I can find myself in the fact that the game IS flawed at some points, the game is still very enjoyable! And if you like timetrials and like improving your own achievments/trophies then this game is really something for you! A 7 might not be as high as a 9, but still, beter then the other 60% of the games that are on the market! And this one really stands out because of it's concept and art-direction. If you, if only just a little, intreagued by the idea of running and jumping in a 1st-person perspective I recommend you to buy this game! It's not even full-priced and you'll have a good time! The replay is quite high because of the abundance of timetrials and the ghost-data. This, in my opinion, makes up for the short, but enjoyable storymode!
You'll either love it or hate it! But atleast; Try it!
