By default, you start out with Ichigo, Rukia, Orihime, Chad, and Ishida. However, by completing missions in Mission Mode, you can gain points (displayed at the top-right corner of the screen), which allows you to unlock the extra playable characters. Once you have enough points, the characters are automatically unlocked. Unlockable chracters are as follows:
