Nope, it didn't sell well at all but the only people that know if it's over tracked or under tracked are sitting at Nintendo. This game was badly marketed and deserved to sell allot more. Oh well at least I got the opportunity to play it.

Actually Hyrule Warriors is considered a success and I'm sure we'll see a followup someday. In fact it's has exceeded expectations in the west. Hyrule Warriors is probably well over 700k now when you factor in eShop purchases. W101 did flop but man it's still a great game and I get to enjoy it because I own a Wii U and don't simply dismiss other systems. Great things ahead for Nintendo, nothing touches 3DS sales, and a Wii U reassurgence is right around the corner. BTW as a PS4 owner, I find the Wii U and PS4 compliment each other nicely.

The demo sucks compared to the actual game.
@WagnerPaiva
Once you nail down the combo system, it's a blast. It's really not that hard to get a hold of, but the game could've done a better job conveying that information. Beyond that, it's not the game -- it's you.

THIS is a perfect reason why Nintendo doesn't make new IP's. Pikmin 3, DKCTF, WWHD, 3D World, MK8, and even 3rd party titles like Sonic Lost World and Rayman Legends are beating this. If you want to see more original content from Nintendo go buy stuff that isn't Mario!

This might give you an idea what sales numbers it would take to get a sequel. 700K would make sales of Fire Emblem game viable on WiiU, I would imagine that is very close to what W101 needs to do. Straight from Nintendo: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/07/nintendo_wii_u_fire_emblem_would_need_to_sell_700k_to_justify_the_effort

Even if it is true and this game was 1/2 Bayonetta cost, we are still looking a crushing loss on this game unless the sales skyrocket soon. I am seeing the game discounted to 30$ new in the shops too. Not a good sign. But I will keep rooting for it.

In 2009, Ubisoft said that the development of PS3/360 games was from 18-28 million. It is the end of 2013 and for sure the costs have not gone down. A massive game like Wonderful 101 to a game for next gen console is most likely to be far more. Plus there are all the other costs (marketing, corporate overhead, etc.)

Uhhhhh... where are we getting that AAA games cost 20 million dollars? Games have a wide variety of costs based on a number of different factors.
Message | Report
fatslob-:O posted 13/12/2013, 11:33
@JWeinCom & Kresnik If we consider that a AAA game roughly costs around 20 million dollars to make and the fact that the game had a 50% higher budget than Bayonetta. Bayonetta was meant to sell 1 million copies at a price of $60 as evidenced by sega's over shipping of the game it is very likely that W101 costs around 30 million.
Message | Report
Kresnik posted 09/12/2013, 12:47
All they're going off is the "2x Bayonetta's budget" tweet that Kayima made. That game failed to be profitable at ~1m sold, I believe? If you did some maths you could probably get a ballpark figure for the budget.

JWeinCom posted 08/12/2013, 06:09

30 million to make this game? Gosh that is a lot of money...

DarkFury posted 28/11/2013, 09:21
@benji232: Yes, I think Nin could make as much as 50% of the retail price, but if the (very conservative) dev cost of this title is around 30 million, then the bare minimum sales Nin needs for this title is 1M copies -and that's full price, and not taking into account marketing costs and Nin overhead. Let's hope this title gets there, but at the moment it does seem unlikely. We shall see. I am rooting for W101!
Message | Report
benji232 posted 25/11/2013, 05:36
@darkfury I think you are neglecting the fact that Sega (the publisher of Bayonetta 1) is not a console manufacturer which means they make a lot less money per copie sold. Nintendo is making a lot more money per copies which means that even though the game costed more to make (which I doubt was A LOT more), it won't need nearly as many copies sold to break even or even profit.

DarkFury posted 23/11/2013, 04:57
@Pillow: Well, it can hardly do worse. But even at 500K at full-price (which I doubt will happen) we are still looking at an eye-watering loss. It was reported this game was more labour-heavy than Bayonetta, so the cost of producing it will have been high indeed. Let's hope for reversal in sales fortunes, but, I can't be too optimistic.

Probably would have done better if it was on the 3DS. But yeah, Nintendo failed to promote the game which is strange as superheroes are popular these days and even though the game has heavy Japanese influences just mentioning a unique Wii U title would have probably helped move more systems. Someone really should be fired over there at NoA another title dropped without much if any fanfare outside of Nintendo Directs and internet hype mainly from Platinum fans.

Not sure about other spots of the world but I think if Nintendo's advertising in Europe or Japan is the same as in North America, they did the game no favors. Sending a new IP out into the world without some sort of hook or significant push on a console like the Wii U is suicide. Even though the demo was great, if they really want to move units of software and hardware their approach for advertising their games needs to change significantly.

The game is an all new IP, on a console that isn't at its best and thereby Europe is the lowest Nintendo market ! I don't know but marketing did help the European market a bit, with no marketing (aka Direct, etc.) this game would've sold 100 copies .. it has outsold Splinter Cell and Disney Infinity on the Wii U in Europe !! Definitely good sales for Europe ! @curl-6 yeah you are right, we buy third party ...
