Wow, so the sales for this game are now neck and neck in America and Japan. That's really great. Even better, it's about to cross the 500k mark. Not bad for a game many thought had no chance. Hironobu Sakaguchi-san and his team must be very pleased to hear this.

XSeed considers TLS their best selling game ever. So on that level, it's a profitable successs. Not as much as XENOBLADE, of course, but still respectable for a new JRPG.

They should have either made this for 3ds or waited and updated the graphics and Ai for the Wii-U. I was severely disappointed in this game and they sales show most people stopped caring about it.

As long as THE LAST STORY maintains its legs, I'm sure it'll still be seen as a modest success. It's already passed the 100k mark in America, something that it was never able to do in Europe.

@noxian
Lets see, so far as of 10/06 The Last Story sold 410k units. So 410k units x $49.99 = $20.496 million gross. I read anywhere that developers make 15 - 25% of the gross (Mistwalker) and publishers make 20-30% off the gross (Nintendo/Xseed in USA). So lets just say 20% went to Mistwalker. Thats $4 million to them. Nintendo on the other hand took home 45% of 310k units ( 25% publisher & 20% Royalties) and 20% royalties of 100k ( USA sales) . Which altogether Nintendo probably pulled in about $8 million for the Last Story so far. I can't imagine this game costing more than 5million

@JTurner82 "So any concerns about this game "flopping" can be put to rest for good."
not really...
XSeed's opinion means fairly little unless you are so naive as to seriously think 100k sales would be considered successful for any publisher other than one in the same specific business as XSeed, i.e. localizing already finished titles for a foreign market.
all XSeed cares about financially is they made back their money from localizing Japanese titles. according to industry analysts, that's actually fairly cheap. in the couple hundred thousand range.
50-100k will pretty much return an XSeed-like publisher's investment.

the one whose opinion means something as far as "flopping" would be Nintendo.

they funded the development of The Last Story. THAT'S where the money goes, not localizing an already made title for NA.
and with that having been said, Nintendo didn't even bother pursuing publishing TLS themselves (in contrast, they did for Xenoblade) which tells you something about how well TLS did from Nintendo's perspective.

TLS may have done fine for XSeed.
but for Nintendo, whose money made The Last Story, the usual industry claim is a major release needs to push at least ~800k to make back costs, which is double what TLS has sold to date total for all regions.

there is a chance that TLS was particularly cheap to produce. its on the Wii, maybe Sakaguchi was particularly frugal in his development costs...
but half of the industry average? that's pretty unlikely.
and even if Sakaguchi did produce such a miracle of cost efficiency, it would be unlikely TLS produced any sort of significant profit.
so not only was it nothing close to a major hit, the reality is it most likely didn't make back its costs.

It's already on track in America to pass the 100k mark. That puts it above Europe's total. Oh, and XSeed said it is doing very well for them just today. So any concerns about this game "flopping" can be put to rest for good.

JTurner82 posted 06/09/2012, 06:08
I don't know how many copies XSeed was planning on selling, but if 150k is their target, I hope they're satisfied, because it looks like that's how much the game is going to top at this point if it tracks like this. That should make it roughly toward 450k LTD. Not a major hit, but not a failure either.

As I said before. It has nothing to do with popularity or whether its good. Its too late in the consoles life cycle for this game. Its like Shenmue 2. The first one sold over a million but the second one came out after the consoles obseletion. It bombed.

If this game had been released a year ago like it should have, the sells would have been far better.

Who said it had to sell better than FFXIII-2 to be profitable?
Message | Report
binary solo posted 02/09/2012, 02:29
So TLS is going to do worse than FF XIII-2 on 360, on a system with a massively larger install base than 360, esp in the home territory for JRPGs, yet it's going to be called a success? That's a pretty big call, especially given, by most accounts TLS is the better game. So I would say dissappinting sales in the least and ample demonstration that JRPG is a struggling genre.

I think what we can conclude is that Wii is not the JRPG genre's natural home. And TLS canb only really be considered a success in relation to JRPGs on Wii.

Anyway, I don't think this game needs to sell 1 million to be successful. If it can manage 500k, then it's no epic fail, and so far, it hasn't done THAT badly.

I thing the story and characters are good in TLS, the action and exploring feeling aren't the best, but the boss fights are sometimes tens, while both FF XIII and FF XIII-2 stories and characters are just to confuse, to extreme with crapy voice acting and the fights in FF XIII-2 are good, but many are won with just pressing A, A, A, A,
TLS has to many flaws to be perfect, but so does FF XIII-2, they both have difrent strenghts and weaknesses, but FF XIII-2 without the next gen grafix, and it wouldn't meet up to The last story

@Raither...FFXIII sucked so it being better than that is no big thing. However I felt XIII-2 is far better than both this game or FFXIII. I think the story is mediocre, the characters are excellent and the gameplay was good. It reminds me of FF1-5 a lot in the approach to story and characters.

RaitheNoblesse posted 05/03/2012, 09:20
it's smaller and shoter than any FF (and has a totally new/diffrent action), that's true; but the emotions, story and characters are like those of the old FFs, which is missing in new RPGs or in the last FFs (while on the otherhand, a overwolrd to explore is missing in TLS)

I still disagree, It uses one town like a hub, it's story is sort of since Sakaguchi wrote 1-5. Lost Odyssey reminded much more of the older FF's than this, but I'm liking this a lot more because it's quite unique.

I'm glad it's selling well, it deserves to be sold even more than FF XIII or FF XIII-2; even the engl. synchros are good; it's Nintendo's own fault, for waiting so long with this game; just like with Xenoblade for the US; Nintendo should just learn to bring the games out parallel; and only keep the very extreme games like dating sims to japan, but bring the others much sooner

NA sales just passed Japan sales. Looks like XSEED was right to bring it over.

Wow, so the sales for this game are now neck and neck in America and Japan. That's really great. Even better, it's about to cross the 500k mark. Not bad for a game many thought had no chance. Hironobu Sakaguchi-san and his team must be very pleased to hear this.

lol, this game is profitable for sure
anything beyond 500k is (except really high budget games like GTA4)

XSeed considers TLS their best selling game ever. So on that level, it's a profitable successs. Not as much as XENOBLADE, of course, but still respectable for a new JRPG.
