These are not particularly good sales, are they?

The game is still on the Top 10 Japanese charts despite these lower looking numbers. That's saying something about its staying power. Either way I expect that WiiU's sales were trounce this.

Wonder how many Japanese people are holding out for the WiiU version.

And the sales of a subscription based MMO cant be compared to a normal game now can it.

they should bring a (only slightly) altered version offline version.., with like 80-90% of the orignal game, and with some other bonuses...(if DQ's gameplay isn't too centred around the Mulitplayer part..)., otherweise the might as well start concentrating on DQ XI (and forget supporting DQ X for 3-5 more years with online stuff..)

if they need to experiment with online fees, then they should stick to PC games... (the gamers there are more willing to pay,. if the game is good..)

a non-Oline DQ would have sold 2(-4)x more in the same time..., a new Monster Hunter would have probably even sold more (if it wouldnt only feel like cheap Monster Hunter Tri "plus"...)
doesn't matter if the Wii isn't doing well in general, DQ looks great and should have sold much, much more... (they killed the game with fees.., fees should have been kept for a spin off, not for a main DQ game. For a DQ Main franchise, it's kind of flop. Don't think it will and should come to the US/EU, with such online fees..., keep such fees for PC games)

I'd hardly call over 500K in 4 weeks for what is essentially a 'dead' console a flop mate. The U SKU should do better as well.

I'm glad, the game is like flopping in Japan...., other "big name" J-RPGs sold this much in 12h... (and it must have costed a lot to make..)

that way, Squar/Enix will rethink, trying to make more $$$ of online fees!!...

the game will never make it to the US/EU, unless the drop the online fees

This being an online game will cap its sales fast.. I doubt more than ~1 million even with the WiiU version...

Nice opening week. Subscriptions will be plentiful and long lasting with this one. Should top out at 500-600k at the very least. Could do even more.

DQ8 sold over 1.2million in the west.

May not be huge but its still popular.

This is really Squares ONLY chance to make DQ mainstream in the west

This is Squares ONLY chance to make DQX, DQ's FF7

Nintendo said they would hep promote DQ outside of Japan. It worked wonders for Professor Layton, so theoretically DQX could sell much more than DQ8.

TheConduit posted 09/01/2009, 01:39
This will probable be the best selling game of the Wii in Japan ever.
Id say if its as good as DQ8 was when it was released it will sell about 8.5 mill

Let me just be the first and probably only one to say it.

No Voice Acting, No cheesy British Localization, no edited content. And if any motion gameplay is involved, incorporate the WiiMotion Plus.

Other than these points...just make the game like any other Dragon Quest games of the past and most likely you will produce one of the best games this gen.

I agree this should sell quite well in Japan but I wonder how it'll stack up to the Ps2 versions.

I must admit that this was a (positive) surprise for me. It means that now Wii got extra legs in Japan until the release of the new DQ; probably 2011.
It was kind of natural that some franchises like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest, which are focused on gameplay and don't require excellent graphics, would go to Wii, since it's the most popular domestic console of this generation. So, now I've got one more reason to buy a Wii. =)
