Okay, if you find the gameplay tweaks unacceptable, you probably won't enjoy this compilation that much. Fortunately you can just get the NES originals (on that system or the Virtual Console). For the rest of you who like the Mario games, and want all the NES games in a convenient package, it can't be beat.
(Note: This review doesn't include the combo pack with Super Mario World)
Story:
Okay, story doesn't matter. The latter two have more story than the first two (Lost Levels came before Mario 2), but it's all about the platforming.
Presentation:
Better graphics, sound that's improved (although some might want the older NES sounds over the Mario World effects), and it's all wrapped around the graphics and level designs that were already kick ass on the NES. 10
Gameplay:
You run and jump, it's perfectly responsive (save for deliberate uses in LL and 2), and the level layouts are well designed for them. 10
Value:
Here's where it takes a hit. Used carts aren't so bad, but new copies are rare (especially thanks to ebay scalpers), and there is no virtual console release planned (although you can buy the NES versions of all but LL in any VC region). So the value isn't as good as it could be. 8.5
Overall:
If you don't mind a used copy, and you have an SNES, it's a decent price, and well worth your time. 9.5

I had the version with SMW in it. Was awesome I could play any of those games out of the same cartridge. Message | Report |
