Presentation - 6.5
Gameplay - 9.5
Value - 8.0
The 19th game in the series brings new features to make veteran players drool.

NHL 10 is EA Sport's 19th attempt at providing best-in-class video games based on the National Hockey League. They've done a terrific Job, I might add.  With a brand new first-person-fighting engine, improved graphics, and physics NHL 10 is worth the upgrade from it's predecessor NHL 09.

Presentation
NHL 10 made very few changes in terms of presentation to differentiate between NHL 09, and this year. The Menu Designs and sounds are identical to those used in the previous games since NHL 06.  When you start the game, you get a quick little 20 second intro of various players hoisting the cup.  As for the starting of games, you still see the Home team walking through the bowels of the arena as the intro song starts.  Stopages of play remain untouched, but how many ways can you show a player skating around?  Goals scored have a few new celebration animations as well but nothing spectacular.

Gameplay
Improved fighting mechanics in their New "First Person" Fights are an amazing recovery from last years 1-2-punch.  Passing is a touch more difficult as it's become harder  to get tape-to-tape.  This can be attributed to the enhanced physics which provide a more realistic environment.  The Gameplay is amazing in NHL 10, more so than I could have imagined.  The most notable game type change is the Dynasty mode is absent and in it's place is a Be a GM Mode, and Season Mode.  GM Mode is a revamped version of the Dynasty mode giving you full control of your team.  While I haven't checked it out yet the word on the street is that it's great.

Value
Prices in Canada increased recently so the game cost $69.99 but value wise it works out to $5.83/month if you play it until next September when NHL 11 is expected.  What can you do for $5.83/month?  Well... Here's What I figure:

  • Enhanced Graphics
  • Updated Rosters
  • Improved AI & Physics
  • Free Online Multiplayer

I personally believe the value is there, but the price is a touch higher for those who are senstive to the Price point.  But if you can afford it I certainly Recommend this game.

My Feedback
If I were to sit down with EA Sports Canada Studio and talk to the developers and producers I would tell them that Their gameplay has reached a point that I would be willing to sacrifice any additional changes for next year to bring up the presentation quality.  Arena's aren't as accurate as they could be (both visually or audible)  I definatley think EA Sports made some great improvements to this game and can't wait to see what's instore for their 20th Game of the series next year.

Overall I give it a 9.0/10

That's just unfair expectations, you can't expect a sport not nearly as popular as most others to sell near as well.

I wonder what these guys worked on for a year. So few changes. I'll still be buying it though.
