The NFL 2K series was a response to EA's decision not to release the popular Madden franchise on the Dreamcast. A marked improvement over the original and acclaimed NFL 2K, NFL 2K1 introduces new and innovative changes to the franchise. The first change is the inclusion of online capabilities. The online capabilities allowed for both online play and roster updates throughout the NFL season. The game also featured an innovative franchise mode that allows the player to direct his/her time through multiple seasons. The list of tasks includes: drafting players, releasing players, and navigating the franchise through free agency.
