In 1983 Shigeru Miyamoto's Super Mario Bros. was released into the world. The 2D Side-scrolling adventure featured a plump Plumber fighting his way past Goombas and Koopas to rescue the Princess who always seemed to be in another castle. One of the greatest all time games spawned various sequels but in 1996 the Nintendo 64's Super Mario took a different direction. Moving into 3D environments the classic side-scrolling world seemed to end, at least for Mario until this gem of a game made it's appearance.
Taking a lot of ideas from the Original Super Mario Bros, this title updates the plumbers into a 2.5D environment which gives that side-scrolling view while maintaining the graphics that gamers have come to expect. From avoiding the goombas, and koopas chasing the Princess, New Super Mario Bros. brings back a nostalgic feeling when you jump onto the flagpole at the end of each level, and at the same time introducing the newer generation to the type of games that really paved the way and made the Videogame industry what it is.
I was impressed with this game, controls are intuitive, there's a koopa-shell suit and giant mushroom introduced into the Mario world with this title. Gameplay is just as fun as it was when I was a young boy playing Super Mario Bros, and it's successors.
Recently Nintendo announced a New Super Mario Bros. Wii title, bringing the same gameplay experience to the home console, I recommend everyone pick-up these New Classic titles, especially if you grew up with the originals.
