SEGA Superstars, released exclusively for the SONY PLAYSTATION 2, was a very unique and original idea. It was a fun game. But a PS2 exclusive? Aw, man.
And now, the SEGA Superstars are back in this stellar tennis game. Definitely inspired by SEGA's Virtua Tennis game to some extent, the game is a lot of fun. The's a lot that could have been added here, but it's still cool.
Let's see what's in here. Great boxart, manuals, and startup menus. There's also a great intro scene. The graphics are awesome. Shiny environments, great character models, and full of fantastic lighting. Some framerate dips, and all minor. An improvement from Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)'s graphics.
The game plays well. It's full of tennis fun. Type B controls are better than Type A here, because when set to that, things will get awesomely crazy. It adds a lot to the excitement. You can also put the game on a closer camera angle, and it's cool to see the game up close. Scoring would take a while to completely get used to, I was more used to shooting in the middle rather than sides before playing this game. When scoring, things will feel a lot better, especially with the awesome Superstar techniques involved.
The shots are nicely done, with solid controls and great mechanics for a fast win. It would be nice if shots would faster, as well as character movement (particularly that of Sonic), and more fantasy inspired charge shot, like in Mario Power Tennis.
There definitely could have been more characters; seriously, Knuckles isn't playable? Tsk, tsk. There still are many great faces to see, and reapperances of past SEGA icons, which adds to the nostalgia factor here. Not only that, but there are full of SEGA references in the games "SUPERSTAR" mode, which is a lot of fun to play.
The sound and audio here is great, while there could have been more tunes. Still, all sounds nice. The voice acting here is comprised of mostly recycled voice clips from past SEGA games. All sound nice, but there could have been better clips. I mean, seriously, how does Jason Griffith's "Weren't you worried?" match the suspense of going Supersonic? Still, all sounds nice.
Overall, SEGA Superstars Tennis is a solid tennis game. There's a lot of value, especially in the game's multiplayer. Everything's smooth and silk and it plays great. Definitely a must for a hardcore SEGA fan.
