Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - April 2025 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 06 June 2025 / 7,538 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 500,171 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,052,963 - Switch

Total Lead: -2,713,665 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 150,357,508

DS Total Sales: 153,071,173

April 2025 is the 98th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the DS by 0.50 million units when compared to the Switch during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 7.05 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.71 million units.

The 98th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is April 2025, while for the DS it is December 2012. The Switch has sold 150.36 million units, while the DS sold 153.07 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 3.66 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

I plan on adding several new comparison charts. Switch 2 vs Switch 1 worldwide, US, Europe, and Japan, as well as Switch 2 vs PS5.

My expectation is Switch 2 will dominate for ~2 and a half years, then after that Switch 1 will start to catch back up in big chunks.

I wouldn’t count out another global calamity to help boost those Switch 2 numbers…haha, kidding….kinda.

Some scientists expect more epidemic/pandemic diseases in the next years, so that isn't so out of consideration

This will be the the last time the DS is head of the Switch in a month comparison

Not if this chart is posted monthly. At this point in the charts(end of April) DS is ahead by 2.71 million and 3.66 mill total. Switch isnt overcoming that in 1 month. Whilst Nintendo will likely be able to report in early August financials that as of end of June it has shipped more than DS, here on VGchartz it'll probably take another 3 months of these charts to reflect actual sell through that beats DS sales of 154.02. Especially with the Switch 2 impact

I think he's talking specifically about leading in the 'Gap change in the latest month' aspect, rather than the overall lead.

Yep, Switch will outsell it by the end of the year, not next 3 months.
