The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 229,482 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 676,944 - PS4

Total Lead: 5,616,708 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 25,856,545

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 31,473,253

April 2025 is the 54th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 229,482 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.68 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 5.62 million units.

The PS5 has sold 25.86 million units in 54 months, while the PS4 sold 31.47 million units. Month 54 for the PS5 is April 2025 and for the PS4 is April 2018.

The PS4 crossed 35 million in month 61 and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 sold 45.86 million units lifetime in Europe. The PS5 is 20.00 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

PS4 is easily going to win in Europe, especially with GTA being delayed. The PS5 is past it's prime. It will most likely end up around 40 million, give or take 2.5 million.

PS5 is lagging far behind PS4 in EU & JP. It’s been keeping up well in USA, but still behind. Call me crazy…but I’m questioning whether PS5 can really catch up to PS4 LTD. Even if the gen lasts an extra year or two, PS5 would really have some work to do.

A new lower low is highly possible. This would be a confirmation of the downward trend.
