The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 489,066 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,058,434 - PS4

Total Lead: 2,486,357 - PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 73,518,527

December 2024 is the 50th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.49 million units.

2Million Gap is not bad at all, this the closest gap between in any PlayStation consoles.

Yeah. PS3 was a failure early on, PS1 had a slower start because it was the new kid, and PS2/PS4/PS5 were all pretty successful from the start. PS4/PS5 have very similar trajectories, with PS5 likely falling a little short.

PS4 will have soon the help of a new MH in Japan.

But the only real bet left now, in the GTAVI. (Or a nice cut in price).

Interesting that PS5 wasn't able to outsell PS4 during the holidays. If the gap increases over 3 millions again, this would very likely mean that PS5 won't outsell PS4 overall or at least for quite some time (confirmed bearish momentum and diagonal resistance).

Do i understand that right? The PS5Pro came out in November. Astro Bot saw daylight in September, Sony reported a record breaking December, but despite these impressive facts the PS4 opened the gap again by nearly half a million alone that month and over 1 million last year? The high prive is no excuse because you can get the PS5 with a disc drive for less than 500 bucks in europe.
As GTAVI will be multiplattform (i know this hurts many people) its not guaranteed at all that tgis game alone will cause millions of PS5 systems per week over the next months like some are predicting, especially if it was really true that the PC eats so much into console sales like some think. And Xbox will also be a bit pushed by its release...

The PS4 was $199/€199 at this point

You can surely put inflation but wages haven’t increased 2x since the end of 2017.

The PS5 Pro is $699 whilst the PS4 pro was $399 and sometimes even $349.
