This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

May 2024 is the 43rd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 310,959 units.
In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 1.28 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 01.07 million units.
The PS5 has sold 58.78 million units in 43 months, while the PS4 sold 59.85 million units. Month 43 for the PS5 is May 2024 and for the PS4 is May 2017.
The PS4 crossed 60 million in month 44, 70 million in month 50, and 80 million in month 56. The PS4 has sold 117.18 million units to date. The PS5 is 58.40 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

Not bad at all considering the PS5 had to deal with a higher price for materials and an entire pandemic.
Doesn’t look like a winning battle to me atm. I struggle to see PS5 keeping up with PS4 during 2017/2018. GTAVI will certainly give a powerful push for the holiday season, but PS4 had HZD, GoW, SM, RDD2, etc. With the economy weak as it is, this seems especially difficult.
