The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

There was once an argument for the PS4 if it can make it at least 1M behind PS3 (10.47M) well, it succeeded. In fact if it continues to sell or have on more strong wave as it did few months ago it may come very close to the lifetime PS3 sales in japan

I am comparing PS4 to PS3, not any other console. So there was doubts that PS4 won't even get to 9.5M however it did. It's interesting to see how close will reach the PS3' 10.47M number.

very nice to see the ps5 selling more than the ps4 in japan. if it continues with good numbers the ps5 may even outsell the ps3 in japan

Especially when you consider how few young people there are in Japan now compared to 15 years ago when the PS3 was in full swing, the sales are impressive. Sony just needs to get more Europe sales but Europeans are hurting economically.

I doubt these are real numbers, since Japan is now shipping PS consoles outside of its' territory.

Ps5 Its about -50% down compare ps4/vita era.Now only one console and only around 40K per week.Worst ps numbers ever in JP.Like a flop.I see only 7.5M lifetime sales.Now 3.6M in 3 years-3 holidays

you are looking at a graph with the PS5 in first place, and yet you are saying it sold half as much... did you even read the article?

We'll have to see if it outsells the PS4 long-term. Right now, it's a toss-up since the margin is under 500,000.
