The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Nice to see that we went from "the end of video game console" in japan at the end of the 3DS/Wii U era to Switch going to become the best selling console of all time there.

The DS was pretty much done at this point. If the Switch manages to sell 4 million this year, it will have a chance to outsell the DS

It doesn't need to sell 4mil this year. 3mil more and 1-2mil next year will seal the deal.

Switch still at like a 50k+ weekly baseline while DS sales started their flatline at this point. Switch will eat up most of that 3.5m DS lead in the next 12 months. Definitely going to be a Switch win, taking the all-time Japan record. Only question is by how much.
