The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Well I guess the Switch will reduce the gap in the next 4 months

The fact that we bow even make this comparison is mind-boggling. Anyone suggesting that at the launch of the Switch would've been asked to lay off the crack. Now it is in reach. That said the Switch currently shows slower momentum than the DS and we nearing the end of the lifecycle. So I doubt it can dethrone the DS (and PS2)

It's more likely the Switch will outsell the DS. Remember at this point at the 5.5 year mark of the DS's lifecycle the 3DS was already announced. So we saw DS sales quickly drop after that, their isn't going to be a Switch successor announcement anytime soon so its far more likely that Switch will have a longer sales lifespan for it to outsell the DS. Its guaranteed at this point the Switch will at least be on the market for a year more than the DS which would be more than enough to outsell the DS.

From here on out, Switch should be closing the gap more and more.

In your opinion which one will be the biggest: 2010 DS's holliday sales or 2022 Switch's holliday one?
