This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.
The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

May 2022 is the 63rd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 44,393 units when you align the launches.
In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 0.94 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 4.93 million units.
The 63rd month for the Switch is May 2022, while for the DS it is February 2010. The Switch has sold 24.97 million units, while the DS sold 29.89 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 49.
The DS has sold 32.98 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 8.01 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Switch slowly making gains and DS doesn't have a huge holiday season to make up the difference. In fact, Switch's holiday will accelerate the closing of the gap. Switch very well could win this one

Which one is harder: the Switch to surpass the DS in Japan or Worldwide?
I would say worldwide is a good deal harder.
If the Switch can beat the DS here, it can beat it overall as well.

Excellent change. I always just assumed I was too dense to grasp it. Now mind you, I probably was, but this will help others with similar denseness.
I needed to look twice what the difference is, because I know the graph for so long. But yeah, it's better this way ^^
