This weekly series compares the aligned launch sales of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

It should be noted the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S had a worldwide launch, while the PlayStation 5 launch was split over the course of two weeks. Also, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched during the holidays in November 2020.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Global:

Through the first 74 weeks available worldwide the Nintendo Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 0.05 million units units and is 4.86 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 4.81 million units.

The Switch has sold 18.90 million in 74 weeks worldwide, while the PS5 sold 18.85 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 14.04 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 74 weeks, the Switch is in the lead. The Switch has a 36.5 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 36.4 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 27.1 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch US:

Through the first 74 weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.21 million units and is 0.45 million units ahead of the Switch. The Xbox Series X|S is ahead of the Switch by 0.24 million units.

The PS5 has sold 7.09 million in 74 weeks in the US, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 6.87 million units and the Switch 6.64 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 74 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The PS5 has a 34.4 percent marketshare, the Xbox Series X|S sits at 33.4 percent, and the Switch at 32.2 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Europe (72 weeks):

  1. PS5: 6,899,399
  2. Switch: 4,860,948
  3. XSX|S: 4,118,381

The PlayStation 5 has been available for one week less than the Xbox Series X|S in Europe. After 73 weeks the PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 2.04 million units and is 2.78 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.74 million units.

The PS5 has sold 6.90 million in 73 weeks in Europe, while the Switch sold 4.86 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 4.12 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 73 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 43.5 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 30.6 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 25.9 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Japan:

  1. Switch: 4,769,241

Through the first 74 weeks available in Japan the Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 3.22 million units and is 4.59 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 1.37 million units.

The Switch has sold 4.77 million units in 74 weeks in Japan, while the PS5 has sold 1.54 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S 0.18 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 74 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The Switch has a 73.5 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 23.8 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 2.7 percent.

Oof, that bend on the sales in Europe for the PS5, when systems just stopped showing up on shelves. :x

And there it is. Launch aligned Switch takes the lead. If PS5 sales remain steady over the next few weeks, Switch will keep this lead. Possibly indefinitely.

had a big shipment of ps5 the week before..

Even with that big shipment they weren't able to prevent the Switch taking the lead, so I'm not seeing your point here.

This is the 74th week. Switch's Black Friday 2018 is on the 89th week. Switch's lowest selling week is 170k and its highest selling week is 250k from here until Black Friday. PS5's lowest selling week the last four months was 76k and its highest was 186k. I'm not confident that PS5 will be able to outperform the Switch in this time period. The numbers just aren't there.

Sony hasn't officially released their quarterly data yet the vg chartz could be wrong. next week the data from the npd group will come out and we will know more or less if vg chartz is right or not
