The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

December 2021 is the 14th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 236,792 units and by 272,549 units in the last 12 months. The PS4 is ahead of the PS5 by 329,520 units.

The PS5 has sold 17.85 million units in 14 months, while the PS4 sold 18.18 million units. Month 14 for the PS5 is December 2021 and for the PS4 is December 2014.

The PS4 crossed 20 million units in month 17, 30 million units in month 25, and 40 million units in month 31. The PS4 has sold 116.54 million units to date.

Damn I didn't think PS4 would catch up to PS5 during the holidays. It could be awhile before it retakes the lead.

Wait... i thought PS5 was tracking ahead of the PS4? We know the Series is tracking ahead of the XBO (by like 1m units). So that must mean the gap between PS5 and Series is narrower than the gap between PS4 and XBO (for the same time frame).

PS5 was tracking ahead PS4 most of the time until Ocotber '21. PS4 closed the gap on black friday and December.
