A cinematic trailer running in engine , and gameplay are different things. Let's see how things play out in real time.

Nice, hope Ninja Theory can make it sing as beautifully as they did with UE4 in the first game

That's nuts. The first Next Gen game we saw at the Game Awards was actually the first game we've seen running on UE5, months before we saw it running on PS5.

Somewhat true, but also, if you read it together they say-

"The team will be building the game on Unreal 5 and leveraging the power of Xbox Series X to bring the Hellblade franchise to levels never before seen. The footage shown was captured in-engine and reflects the power of Xbox Series X available to developers to deliver new universes, experiences and games in ways you have never imagined."

Notice after they say they will be working on UE5, they say the footage was captured "in engine". So unless they were talking about their own engine at the time we can rule out they weren't working on UE4 or else they would have mentioned it. It's certainly not as cut and dry as you'd think just by using "will". Will is a strange future tense verb especially with the different contexts it can have to accompany it.

But why would they also not put UE4 on the trailer? UE4 was known of by then, UE5 was not and the timed announcement of UE5 might have a lot to do with this. But I'm digging myself in a hole here. So more than likely yes, it wasn't a true UE5 game however the latest version of UE4 is next generation ready. I guess we'll never know what engine that trailer was in, but yes you're probably right it is most likely in UE 4.25 going by the release date of UE5 which is set for 2021.

@Bandorr It could be possible that Sony had the rights first, to showcase Unreal Engine 5 as Epic has been working closely with Sony lately so MS could only show case the In Engine trailer but was unable to use the Unreal Engine 5 logo. It possibly explains why it said Unreal Engine instead of UE4, as the game might not be UE4.

But surely the Playstation Unreal Engine 5 Demo is way more impressive .... right?

The UE5 demo played in real time to demonstrate a not fully optimized graphics engine and early hardware is indeed way more impressive than an in-engine trailer.

Suddenly it has become the best graphics engine and the best marketing tool. Thank you Sony

It always has been. Next gen starts when Epic says so. ;)

There are better engines, ID tech 7, Decima, CryEngine and some other proprietary exclusive engines such as SSM engine. Problem is that those engines are either only used by the companies that own them such as ID tech 6 and 7 only used by ZeniMax companies or it is very difficult to get a license to use the engine such as Decima. Unreal is a commercial engine that is available to all, that is why it is very popular and widely used by developers. Plus it's got a massive marketing team behind and it
