In the next 5 month (August till December 2016) PS4 will sell another about 11.5 million units. Switch needs to sell about 9 million units from December 2019 till April 2020 to keep the lead. Switch sold about 4 million in November. So probably at least 6 million in December and then only 3 million are missing for 4 month including animal crossing launch. I think Switch can keep the lead.

It's going to be close, but I agree. Switch is definitely going strong in December, and I think it will keep momentum for the next several months thanks to Animal Crossing. So far, these graphs have been looking like a double helix, but from here on, there is a very good chance of it being Switch with a permanent lead.

Switch very well might sell more than the best year of the PS4 so for a while, I think switch will keep the lead

With this difference that then the PS4 keeps the technological lead for a long period, while the Switch will soon be in a situation of 2 technical generations late behind its two competitors.

I've been looking at this for a while. VGC has the ps4 at 53.5m at the end of december 2016. The Switch's equivalent week in that comparison will be in mid april 2020. Even without considering adjustments, the switch will already be over 50m units by the end of 2019, only needing a little over 3m (or even less) in the following 3.5 months to stay ahead.

Considering it sold 3.9m in the same period this year and will likely see a good increase in 2020, it is guaranteed for the switch to remain ahead of the ps4 even after it's 2016 holiday. I expect the gap to increase to around 10m 1 year later, 13m after one more year and then stay roughly the same or decrease a little as both systems decline.

At this point, I’m far more interested in seeing how Switch fares after PS5 launches.

Completely different audience, Switch sales won't be affected by it.

Well the Switch sales didnt affect PS4 or Xbone sales. And Switch will slowly drop the price in the next coming years.
