The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 4,817 – PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 314,990 – PS4

Total Lead: 321,682 – PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 7,258,408

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 6,936,726

November 2018 is the 58th month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 4,817 units in the last month and in favor of the PlayStation 4 by 314,990 units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 4 currently leads by just 321,682 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. The PlayStation 4 has sold 7.26 million units, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 6.94 million units.

It's not really good for it to be this close to the PS3. PS3 was pretty disappointing for Sony. PS4 in Japan seems kind of disappointing too.

Japan is a shrinking market, though. It used to sell 60 - 70 million pieces of hardware in former generations.

neck and neck will the Switch further dampen PS4 sales?

It was neck and neck 12 months ago. The PS4 has grown its lead by 300k units since then, so I don't think you quite understand what "dampen" means as it does not mean to grow stronger.

my comment was in regard to this chart and just because PS4 gained on the PS3 doesn't mean the Switch hasn't acted to dampen sales.
