Forza 3 Trying To Bridge Gap Between Hardcore And Casual - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 11 July 2009 / 2,435 Views

In order to break the perspective that only ‘hardcore’ racing enthusiasts will enjoy Forza 3, Turn 10 hopes to add enough customizable options to invite the more ‘casual’ racing fan in.

The producer of Forza 3, Korey Krauskopf likens it to the ability first-person shooter fans have to manipulate the online game rules for Halo 3, and going even further with more control.

The information and features revealed were:

  • Layered on assists, like auto-braking and one-button driving
  • Help for auto-tuning a car
  • Incredibly elaborate race rules editor. The game's online modes have more than 100 rule types to tweak
  • About a dozen or so pre-created race modes
  • Option to section everyone into two teams, one team will win
  • Option to decide that a specific person from each team must cross the finish line to determine who wins, the rest of the players are just there to provide interference to the other team, or protection for their own team. This will result in each trying to protect one racer and ensure they cross the finish line first whilst trying to keep the other team’s chosen racer from the finish line.
  • Option to limit teams to specific car classes, tunings, assists, or upgrades.
  • Option to stagger the roll-off times from the start line giving some a head start
  • Playing online will still net you experience points for your in-game career

"We are giving everyone the ability to enjoy the game," Krauskopf said. "But not taking anything away from our fan base.”

Nss7 so what are you trying to say because in quality everyone can agree KZ2 is better then halo 3 there a big difference implying that factor with GT and forza the gt series always been great all of the games so how can it be like halo and kz2 how because its more popular it will sell people need to understand when developers make a game they try to get a fanbase and the gt fanbase is huge they didnt win them over with halo because of the addicting online not saying its a bad thing yes forza is the most realistic racer for now we have yet to see what gt5 will do we know it will sell millions thats a fact we just dont know if it will live up to the hype but judging from the previous gt series it will most likely will

LOL @ the GT fans calling it casual. Hahahaha.

The game will be the most realistic racer if you want it to be. You complain because it gives those out there who dont know much about the extensive tuning and minute touches that give you an extra 0.010 s a chance to enjoy the game?

Sad very sad. Alex Wurz and ex F1 driver said this is the closest thing he's experienced to the best simulator in the world. ( which is Mclaren F1's simulator, which only 3 people drive a year. and he had used it. ) SimRacing are down as saying that Forza 3 is the first console racer to ever be competing with the top PC racing sims it's that good.

So give it a rest. The game is as hardcore as you want it to be.

Why does the title say, "us" if they are giving the interview to Kotaku?

Let's see here... I played GT 2 when i was like 14 or somethin... and finished it without the help of these auto assist crap. Oh well ;/ It's better to try and get more people into the series i guess.

people who drive real cars don't send them down tracks at 120mph toward a sharp corner. Auto-breaking forces you to apply the breaks as you approach so you don't overshoot the corner.

Also, driving a car and playing a video game are two totally separate things. While they try to convey speed through video, some people need to feel the speed too to really appreciate it. If you don't have a feel for how fast you are going you will overshoot corners.

Is auto-braking what it sounds like it is?

This is just a wild guess, but I think the kind of people who buy racing sims are car owners. People who can drive in real life. I'd be worried if it were that hard for these people to wrap their heads around the concept of braking.

I think this is an interesting and really wise turn of events for the series. it should increase longevity in terms of in console time. this gives you the option to goof around, yet still you can make a hardcore no assists 24 marathon at the nurburgring ... I like it. now if only we could get a complete feature list, car list and track list... cant wait to give it a go....

and dare i say this online mode is something I think gt5 would benefit from

How do you bridge the gap between casual and hardcore, when any attempt at whatsoever to reach out to the casuals inevitably causes the hardcore to baw and lash out? Trying to do this was not a wise move; when one demographic is not interested in mixing, the only practical response is to go for one or the other.

This game would as good or maybe better but i dont think it can outsell GT5. It just like KZ2, R2 and Halo 3. Both KZ2 and R2 are great but more popular Halo 3 will sell more.

GT series is casual from the start so stop whining, sonyboys. the fact that Turn10 actually want to make this game both more hardcore and more accessible makes this game better. everyone can buy it, play it and still have fun. if Forza 3 will be too hard for someone he can turn on some assists and turn them off overtime as he will become a better driver.

cool features i like that team racing thing - though i hope it won't end up ramming people off the road.

Forza 3 for teh casualz confirmed? GT5 for the real racing hardcore? :-P

But seriously, I wish developers would forget this... if you are making a real game, then dont try and dumb it down just to make it more apealing to casual gamers... even if its just an option, better use that time to add other things... like weather effects :-P

i don't think Forza 3 can win that fight, i also think GT 5 is going to kill it to. It won't sell 17 million copies like mario kart but i could see it doing almost twice what forza 3 will do.

Well that settles it.. Mario Kart Wii is Forza 3's real competition ;)
