Nintendo Bad for the Videogame Industry? - Article
by Pat Fass , posted on 01 May 2007 / 2,031 ViewsAt least one analyst seems to think so. Todd Mitchell, an analyst for Kaufman Brothers Equity Research, believes that although the new Nintendo platforms (DS & Wii) are “taking the videogame industry by storm”, Nintendo is, in the process, “resegmenting [the industry] in its own favor”.
“Nintendo is dominating software sales on its popular hardware platforms, leaving the publishers with a smaller slice of an only somewhat incrementally larger pie”, writes Mitchell. “Moreover, we feel that the likely shorter product cycles of Nintendo’s platforms puts the publishers in a permanent catch-up mode.”
While Mitchell is not the first person to bring up this point, it should be noted that while things are still in the early stages, companies like Ubisoft and Sega have already reported success with their Wii console releases.

Just make better games and don't whine when they don't sell well ;)
Yeah selling Video games is bad for the industry. Damn the Wii and DS for expanding the Market. Of course Nintendo is dominating the sales on its own system, at this point the people that bought the Wii bought it for Nintendo's games. The Fact is People bought a game machine (some of who probly never bought one before) there are still 4 other Platforms to realease games on that Nintendo doesn't release games. Whats to say someone that just bought a Wii does get tired of the Nintendo games and doesnt try one of these other systems now since Wii got them into gaming?
What Nintendo is doing is only great for the industry. They have two platforms in which games can be made much cheaper than on the 360 or PS3 which is giving third parties a great avenue, and Nintendo is expanding the gamer base. Now Nintendo software does do the best on Nintendo systems, but certainly there have been third party successes on Nintendo systems. Ultimately Nintendo's expanding the gamer base will benefit third parties, although perhapse in the short term their sales might not be as good.

Nintendo MADE THE INDUSTRY... So don't fokin bother about this threat... A false statement... If i were to say Sony or Microsoft were bad for the industry, would that apply?! NO!
They all make a good piece of the industry which keeps it healthy competition wise...
Wii = Gateway to gaming, both for gamers and smaller developers who don't have the budgets and manpower to make HD games. Nintendo is expanding the market = good for the market, not bad!
Stupid article. There is plenty of potential in Nintendo platforms for 3rd-party development, and many companies are taking advantage of this.
I think Nintendo is seeding for the innovation right now. Unlike this analyst's view, there will be even bigger business opportunities not ony for the current big video game companies but also for new start-ups that can leverage this chance. I think this will lead to sound growth for the industry. What we need is innovations and changes that can stimulate new ideas and create new opportunities for all of us.
How dull it would be without Nintendo and also Microsoft I have to say who have had a massive inpact in online play with xbox live.
I'm sure I'll think of something Sony have given us soon!!
That guy's basically saying that Nintendo's uncanny ability to single-handedly annihilate the game market is too much for 3rd-parties to keep up with.
hohoho merry christmas
Nintendo IS the industry. They are the lifeforce which really keeps it going. PlayStation was successful but if not for Nintendo around many advancements weren't going to take place and the industry would eventually go stale. The LOSS of Nintendo is bad for the industry. Enough of these analysts and their jackass opinions. They're almost ALWAYS wrong and usually a day late and a dollar short.
