The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

December 2016 is the 38th month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Wii when compared with the Wii’s 38th month on sale. The gap increased by 2.57 million units in the last month. Over the last 12 months it has increased by 3.92 million units. The Wii currently leads by 10.85 million units.

Both consoles launched in November. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 53.80 million units, while the Wii sold 64.65 million units during the same timeframe.

What else can Sony do? They had Uncharted, Little Big Planet 3, Killzone and Uncharted Collection... after The Last of Us Part II then thats it. No more major big exlusives. I can be wrong!

It will sell a lot longer it's probably still ahead of the PS1 with aligned launches. Until 2020 Sony will still release se big games. Since I don't see how Sony will make a PS5 sooner which is at leadt three times as powerful as the PS4 pro for $400

They still have Gran Turismo and God of War coming as well.

There is also a new Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption game coming too. So the PS4 still has a huge lineup of massive triple A titles in the chamber.

PS4 sold more to consumers than PS2 shipped to retailers in this point of its life. What else do u want ?

Come on with the PS1/2 comparisons. When the PS1 launched, Lion King was the top grossing movie. Playstation 2 launched right before Britney Spears dropped Oops I Did It Again.

The market's completely different. Expecting sales trends to be the same as gen 7 is iffy as it is. But comparing the trajectory of the PS4 to PS1 and 2 is ludicrous.

Wii sales will stale from now on.. PS4's will keep doing as good as now...

People forget how insane the Wii sold for the first three years. Its around this time Wii falls of a cliff, though.

Wii sold 17 million units in its fourth year. So, if you call that dropping off a cliff, then the PS4 is already down there at the bottom.

Sorry, forgot it was december 2009 rather than december 2010

Bear in mind that the PS4 actually had an extra week of sales on the Wii in December, because of how the calendar worked out. The Wii will pick up another half a million at least in January.

Wii in 2010 sold almost exactly the same as PS4 did this year. Practically the same numbers in most months. The difference is that PS4 spikes around September when the Slim comes out, and Wii sales are more evenly spread out.

This year saw an official price cut of 50, a slim model, a deluxe model, and a temporary price cut of another 50 dollars. If all of that has kept sales steady (which isn't bad since 17 million is nothing to sneeze at) then it's unlikely to surge next year. It would be incredibly impressive for the PS4 to just stay flat.

Ignoring the Scorpio and Switch for now, sales should naturally fall by around 2 million. So the Wii should be up by 14-16 million at the end of the year.

That means that PS4 has to sell 35 million from that point onwards. For reference, the PS3 sold about 40 million in the same timeframe. I don't see that happening though.

Bear in mind that PS4 release in Japan only in february 2014.

JWeinCom JWeinCom (on 04 February 2017)

I'm not going to bear that in mind, because it is completely irrelevant.

This year, the sales data ends on exactly December 31st. I'm pretty sure it's globally aligned, so all Japanese sales up to December 31st 2016 are accounted for. There are no missing sales from that month, and launching a few months later has no bearing on what sales are going to be like going forward.

On the other hand, the last sales update from the Wii's 38th month (December 2009) was from December 26th. That means that five days of Wii's 38th month sales are unaccounted for. Those sales will show up in the next update, where the Wii will have an extra week. During that extra week, the Wii sells 900K. Nearly a million units is something you do want to bear in mind when thinking about how this will play out.

I disagree, because the PS4 has games going for it in 2017.

Look at the first 2 months alone, and there are some great titles for all audiences especially Japan where at this point they have a home console monopoly (Switch could shake that up). Final Fantasy just launched in Dec., but Gravity Rush, Resident Evil 7, Ni-Oh, Yakuza 0, Neir, Horizon and more are all launching in the first 2 months.

Then you have huge heavy hitters from first and 3rd party like Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, God of War, Days Gone, Mass Effect, Red Dead, Persona, Marvel vs Capcom, and more.

2017 is all about games and hopefully price cuts.

But all systems get games in the middle to late years, and it's never led to a massive increase in sales. Sure it's a strong lineup, but it's not some out of this world amazing lineup that's going to help the PS4 defy all industry trends.

This was the Wii's strongest christmas. I think PS4 will slightly close the gap during this year and next christmas it will be on par again. At this point Wii only sold good during christmas time.

  • +3
JWeinCom siebensus4 (on 03 February 2017)

Yeah... but no.

If you put 2010 Wii head to head with 2016 PS4, the Wii is ahead for 7 out of 12 months of the year. Of the five months PS4 wins, two of them are by about 50K. The only months PS4 is ahead significantly are September, October, and November, when the PS4 Slim and Pro are released.

So, unless you don't consider PS4 sales to be good, then the Wii continued selling well at this point.

By the end of the Wii-PS360 era, total console sales were about 360 million. Out of curiosity, are current consoles on track to meet this figure in a similar time frame? I'm going to guess no?

Qwark KLAMarine (on 03 February 2017)

260 million (80+80+100), but the Wii was an odd console which was bought by non gamers. It's more intresting to see if the PS4 and X1 will outsell their counterparts. Before the 9th gen being the PS5 and X2 are launching. If not the state of consoles is worry some.

Thanks for the correction.

Just did the math: PS360Wii era is ahead of this one by about 28.5 million.

124 million vs 95 million.

Its not worrying at all. Its just returning to numbers that it was before people who dont really care about gaming bought into the motion craze. Only one of the big three had a REAL big drop from its last console

Even selling as much as it does, the Wii is still getting a nice advantage. Even if the PS4 will surely outlive the Wii and eventually outsell it, will there ever be a fastest selling console than the Wii?

the real difference between PS4 and Wii is much more pronounced than 11mil, Nintendo hasn't guarded his creation in the same way done by Sony.

The most important part of the ps4 is if the attach rate keeps on going up. Including digital sales i'm sure it is much higher then it really is, especially with the profit from the dlc.

I always get thumbs down for saying this but: PS4 will not outsell Wii and home consoles will be down gen over gen (Even if you remove Wii, the other two will not outsell their last gen counterparts). This is a down generation.

  • 0
JWeinCom GhaudePhaede010 (on 04 February 2017)

Hmm... The PS4/XBone were up by about 1.37 million this year. Both of those are more or less flat this year.

In 2010, both the PS3 and 360 increased sales, but especially the XBox 360 with Kinect. Even if PS4/One is flat, they'll fall behind a couple of million. More likely, PS360 will pick up 5 million, narrowing the lead to 17-18 million.

2011 is basically flat for the PS360. The PS4/XBox one should be declining by then, and I would guess that PS360 will pick up another 7-8 million. So, then the lead is about 10 million.

2012 was when we started seeing decline, but not a huge drop. The systems combined for 22 million, which is not all that far off from what the PSOne is doing now. That could be another 5 million or so.

Next year, they sold about 14 million combines. This would line up with 2020. Assuming a new console is out that year from Sony or Microsoft (which seems very likely), then that should cut sales.

So, yeah. It's far from impossible for the PS360 to come out on top. If the PSOne successors come out in 2019, it's almost certain. Unless the shift to 4k TVs drives demand for Scorpio or Pro that is.

The Wii managed to sell around 17 million units in its 4th year, which was around the same range that the PS4 sold these past 2 years.
The way I see it, PS4 can go either one of two ways.
A) It breaks that 17 million ceiling with Pro, Slim, and it's games coming out this year and starts noticeably closing the gap
OR
B) It goes down YoY and the Wii builds upon its lead.

Dark_Lord_2008 (on 04 February 2017)

the ps4 will maintain its sales momentum and sell over 120+ million consoles. It is possible for the ps4 to reach 150 million console sales for this generation.

  • -2
JWeinCom Dark_Lord_2008 (on 04 February 2017)

So... you think it's possible that the PS4 will sell an average of 17 million units a year until the middle of 2022 to reach sales of 150 million? That's pretty out there.

Even 120 would require it to sell with no decline into late 2020. I don't know why people expect that PS4 sales are never going to slow down.

Obviously the gimmicky console sells better because it was too front loaded. In the long run ain't no doubt in my mind the PS4 will be the winner. Ps4 stand for beast
