With the PS4 basically being flat YoY in 2016, it's 3rd full year, it sold 4 million less than the Wii did in 2009, the Wii's full year.
Wii sold around 17.3 million in 2010.
Now, I believe the PS4 will have better legs than the Wii did.
The PlayStation brand typically has pretty strong legs + the Pro will be instrumental later down the line in my view.
But if it's going to beat the Wii, it needs to pick up the momentum, like, NOW.

If the PS5 is coming in 2019, PS4 will have no troubles beating this!

Actually, if the PS5 launches in 2019, it has a really slim chance.

The PS4 has to sell 51 million to beat the Wii. Assuming it averages 16 million for the next two years (which is a pretty generous assumption) then it would need to sell about 19 million to from 2019 until it stops selling.

Since the PS4 came out, the PS3 has sold a bit under 14 million, and it's unlikely it's going to sell very much more. The PS4 would have to sell 5 million more than that after the PS5, if the PS5 comes out in 2019. Not impossible, but pretty unlikely.

If the PS5 comes out in 2020, the PS4 has a really good chance of beating the Wii, but it's not a sure thing. If it comes out in 2019, the chances are a lot lower.

PS5 will come Holiday 2019, and PS4 will beat the Wii in Lifetime sales.

According to the data here, Wii sold about 7.5 million in December. Sony said 6.2 million, and 1.2 million were sold black friday week. So, that means about 5 million units for December. The gap will be just under 11 million going into the next year. However, assuming PS4 sales stay flat in January compared to last year, the gap will be closer to 12 million by the start of February.

The PS4 has to be flat YOY to keep pace with Wii, and has to be up significantly to put any kind of dent in the lead. Unless Sony has a big surprise waiting, it's more likely that PS4 sales will drop a million or two at this point in its lifespan. So... Wii should be up by around 13 million going into the fifth aligned year. If the PS4 falls a bit faster than that, it may be 15 or 16 million.

From that point on, Wii sells about 19 million units. PS4 needs to sell that to keep pace, plus make up another 13-15 million or so, for a total of somewhere around 35 million. That's a pretty tall order.

It's not impossible. The PS3 sold just around 40 million in that time frame, so if the PS4 has a similar tail end, it will pull through. That being said, I don't think the PS4 will have as strong of a back end, which will leave things closer. Assuming it's a traditional lifecycle with the PS4 transitioning to the PS5 and not the PS4 Pro Plus or something, I think the Wii will narrowly win.

By the way, I have a question. When the Swich is released and you start making charts about it, will you compare it to the 3DS or the WiiU? Or both?
