The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.
PlayStation 4 Vs. Nintendo 3DS:
Gap change in latest month: 393,244 – PS4
Gap change over last 12 months: 11,206,094 – PS4
Total Lead: 17,246,737 – 3DS
PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 40,589,739
Nintendo 3DS Total Sales: 57,836,476
The Nintendo 3DS is currently the best-selling platform of the 8th generation, while the PlayStation 4 is the best-selling home console. The PlayStation 4 launched nearly two years after the Nintendo 3DS.
The gap peaked at 35.22 million units in favor the Nintendo 3DS in December 2013. The gap has consistently shrunk since then.
During April 2016 the gap grew in favor of the PS4 by 393,244 units. In the last 12 months the gap has grown in favor of the PS4 by 11.21 million units. The 3DS currently leads by 17.25 million units.
The PlayStation 4 has sold 40.59 million units, while the Nintendo 3DS has sold 57.84 million units.

So the PS4 should pass the 3DS around holydays 2017-1st third of 2018. Good numbers for both, I don't think anyone thought the 3DS would end up winning against the PS4, but it fought a decent fight despite the handheld market's situation.
Well if you go back to last gen with the ps3 vs the DS nobody would have thought the ps4 would easily beat the 3DS.
True, but the PS3vsDS is the exact opposite than the PS4vs3DS. The PS3 had a ton of problems and saleswise it fell way befind its predecessors, while the DS appeared at the highlight of portable gaming, plus becoming a mass phenomenom alongside the Wii. Now, the PS4 is quickly becoming a sales monster while the 3DS is suffering the downfall of handheld gaming. Sony getting it right and the rise of smartphones/tablets sealed this encounter a long time ago.
I agree with you. I'm just saying that just 3-4 years ago most wouldn't have given the ps4 a chance. We can all see why but I don't think many thought ps4 would do so good and that the handheld market would decline so badly.
There was a thread about a year ago entitled "When will ps4 pass 3ds in sales" and I believe POE said it would never happen, so their are some people who thought the 3ds would win. xD

Well this isn't an aligned chart so it would just be 150m DS VS 40m PS4s with the PS4s eating into that 150m all the time, not sure will the PS4 ever hope to reach those kind of figures, only time will tell.
Is it just me or are these graph titles wrong half the time in these articles. The title says "3ds lead" but the value on the graph is not how much the 3ds is leading by, it's how much the ps4 is leading by (thus a negative number)
