PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Japan Lifetime Sales – January 2016 Update - Sales

Welcome to the latest edition of the ‘PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Japan’ article. This series compares the monthly and lifetime sales of the 8th generation of home consoles - the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U.

 

Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U in in Japan for January shows how the gap has slowly shrunk between the PlayStation 4 and Wii U. The PlayStation 4 has outsold the Wii U most months since it launched. The Xbox One is almost non-existent in the land of the rising sun.

The Wii U has sold 3.08 million units lifetime, the PlayStation 2.38 million units, and the Xbox One 65,061 units.

Taking a look at the marketshare, the Wii U tops the other two platforms combined. The Wii U has a 56 percent market share, the PlayStation 4 sits at 43 percent, and the Xbox One just one percent.

Wii U Total Sales: 3,079,166

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 2,382,143

Xbox One Total Sales: 65,061

 

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U in the month of January. The PlayStation 4 and Wii U have outsold the Xbox One every month since it launched in September 2014. The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U by 62,125 units and the Xbox One by 120,546 units. The Wii U outsold the Xbox One by 58,421.

When you compare monthly sales to a year ago the PlayStation 4 and Wii U are up and the Xbox One is down. The PlayStation 4 is up 60,313 units, the Wii U is up 23,342 units, and the Xbox One is down 1,057.

Looking at market share for the month of December, the PlayStation 4 managed to achieve 67 percent. The Wii U accounted for 33 percent of the consoles sold, and the Xbox One accounted for less than one percent.

Wii U Monthly Sales: 58,939

PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 121,064

Xbox One Monthly Sales: 518

The Xbox One numbers... look like rounding errors. Its so hard to put into context just how bad the Xbox is doing in Japan. Do we even have a reference for something like this?
