I Believe In Aliens: Colonial Marines - Preview

These xenomorphs are getting a lot of exposure lately, what with the new movie Prometheus and the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines from Gearbox - I hope you like face huggers. While Microsoft thought it would be cool to show us all a trailer for the movie during their press event I wandered over to the SEGA booth to get some hands-on time with Colonial Marines’ multiplayer mode. What did I think? Read on to find out.

The demo that I played was a six against six multiplayer match, with the six of us playing as the marines and the game’s developers playing as the titular aliens. After selecting my weapon load-out (machine guns FTW) we entered the battle. The first thing that became clear was just how different the two races play. The marines are your standard soldiers, running on the ground and shooting everything that’s not quit human while the Aliens get access to the rooftops of the map, allowing them to sneak around and get behind you.

Even though it was a multiplayer match, Aliens: Colonial Marines was definitely not short on genuinely scary moments. Whether it’s the terrifying screech of a xenomorph or the more subtle weather effects, the game definitely feels like it belongs in the storied Aliens franchise.  Visually the game is also on par with the best looking games out there and it’s clear that the staff at Gearbox have taken meticulous care to make a game that looks and feels like a true Aliens experience.

It’s sad that my Aliens: Colonial Marines experience was so short, we lost against the developers 51-50 and I would have gladly waited in the over hour long line for another shot at it. Alas I’ll have to wait for the game’s release on February 12th 2013 like everyone else. Aliens: Colonial Marines will be available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC and Wii U.
