I love parties, and themed parties are even better than regular parties, in my opinion. I've also been known to karaoke in my day, when the drinks are properly flowing and the mood strikes me. Badda-bing, badda-boom, a karaoke themed party for any occasion! Of course, themed parties can be a little bit more pressure for the host because it's important to keep the interest for the theme going for the entire duration of the party. Games are a great way to get everyone involved.
1. American Idol
There's no shortage of singing shows on television today, but we have to remember that American Idol started years ago with Simon Cowell's open-audition singing extravaganza. It's an easy game to set up - pick party members to judge, members to "audition", and get everyone else to vote. It's also fun to put some songs in a hat or give "character traits" to the judges (nice, mean, snarky, snappy, etc) to help make the game a little funnier.
2. Know the Lyrics
This is similar to musical chairs, except with songs. Basically, the host will choose 20-30 songs and make a playlist with these songs. Then, the host needs to get a whole bunch of balloons and print out truth or dare questions on paper and cut them into small strips. But the papers with the questions inside the balloon and then blow them up and tie them. Have everyone stand or sit in a circle and pass the balloon. Randomly stop the songs, and whoever is holding the balloon has to finish the lyric. If they don't know it or they get it wrong, they have to pop the balloon and answer the truth or dare question inside.
3. Look Alike
This one has to planned in advance a little bit - it involves telling the guests to dress up like their favorite rock star or musical idol. Then, everyone takes their best guess at who all of the other guests are supposed to be. Everyone who guesses correctly gets a prize - or a shot! A variation on this game is to put Post-it's on everyone's back that have the name of a famous musician on them, and the other guests have to give them hints to help them discover their musical alter-ego. That way everyone can play, even if they don't dress up.
4. Remix!
This is a great game for those who are more creatively minded. Essentially, split the party into two teams and give them each a song. Then the teams have ten t to twenty minutes to rewrite the song. They can write a remix or do a parody Weird Al style.
5. Name the Song
This is a fun way to get everyone involved. Instead of announcing the song when calling the next karaoke singer, just play the first few seconds of the song and let everyone guess what the song is. Add extra points or prizes if they know the artist and who sang it originally. If renting a karaoke machine, make sure that the song name doesn't come up when the other guests can see it, or make sure that the karaoke DJ knows not to announce the songs.
