Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Over the first two month of 2013 we will be looking at the 2012 sales by platform. This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling Xbox 360 games in 2012. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Wii games in 2012 and the week before that the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games in 2012.

Top 10 Selling Xbox 360 Games in 2012

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Xbox 360 games in 2012, seven of the titles were released during the year. Also one game was released in 2010, and two in 2011.

The seven games released in 2012 sold a combined 31.92 million units or 78.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one game released in 2010 sold a combined 4.57 million units or 11.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two games released in 2011 sold a combined 4.18 million units or 10.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling Xbox 360 games sold a combined 40.67 million games in 2012. One game sold more than 10 million units, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and only one other title topped five million units, Halo 4. Nine of the top 10 games sold more than two million units, while the one other title was just under two million units sold.

Two games are first party, published by Microsoft and eight games are third party. The third party publishers include three Electronic Arts titles, two Activision titles, one Ubisoft title, one Take-Two title, and one Bethesda title. The two first party titles, published by Microsoft, sold a combined 11.91 million units or 29.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The three Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 7.65 million units or 18.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles sold a combined 13.08 million units or 32.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Top 10 Selling Xbox 360 Games in 2012

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling Xbox 360 games in 2012 as a graph shows how two titles, Black Ops II and Halo 4, sold well above the rest. Those two titles sold 18.20 million units, almost as much as the other eight games combined, which sold 22.47 million units.

There are two Call of Duty titles in the top 10. The three titles sold a combined 6.23 million units or 26.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Here are the rest of the Xbox 360 sales in 2012 outside the top 10: Microsoft sold 9.81 million Xbox 360’s in 2012. This is a drop of 29.0 percent when compared to 2011. There were also 135.53 million games sold for the Xbox 360 in 2012. This is a 12.3 percent drop year-over-year. Also Xbox 360 sales have reached a total of 73.58 million units at the end of 2012.

26 titles sold one million or more units and 59 titles sold 500,000 or more units. 135 titles sold 200,000 or more units and 216 titles sold 100,000 or more units.

26.03 million games sold for the Xbox 360 in 2012 were first party, published by Microsoft. Electronic Arts sold 22.74 million games for the Xbox 360 in 2012, Activision 20.54 million games, Ubisoft 13.19 million games, and Take-Two 11.79 million games.
