I hope this hits 10 million, if only so it'll at least break the mold of 10 million xbox 360 sellers that aren't bundled or are a FPS.
VGKing (on 23 January 2012)
Wow never knew Capcom published this game in Japan.

@Aion
Yeah. Not even 100K on Games on demand.
Aion (on 14 April 2010)
@toastboy44562 you don't mean the Xbox 360 alone?, because no way would it sell even a million on games on demand.
toastboy44562 (on 08 April 2010)
probably at 11 million with games on demand downloads
piggychan (on 04 April 2010)
the first GTA game where I actually completed it.

I just love the city it just seems believeable

gameplay wise I wish for this and that but overall I enjoyed it

This is now available on the games on demand marketplace so how do we track the sales on there ??
Intendo21 (on 23 March 2010)
Overrated. Great but doesn't deserve an 11/10.
kutabacchimae (on 06 March 2010)
I never liked GTA but gave it a try since I keep getting told how amazing it supposed to be. Played ~2hrs saw it was still GTA. If you didn't like the series before, this won't make you a believer.

coolbeans (on 16 June 2009)
Will that be anytime soon Ari (if you by chance have an idea)? My friend keeps pressuring me into getting this but if it's planning on dropping price soon I'll probably hold out and grab the 2 DLC's and this for $60.

drakesfortune (on 26 February 2009)
How did this sell so few copies this week with L and D just out?
black7xxx7 (on 15 February 2009)
@egghead not it means the xbox 360 sales were 7.3 not all sales combined and ps3 sales were 5.18 there is no way gta4 only sold 7.3 million sales combined i think you need to review your article again
black7xxx7 (on 15 February 2009)
probably will sell more with the exclusive DLC "The Lost and Dammned" for the 360 who will buy the ps3 version when there is this dlc coming out for the 360 my game of the year besides left 4 dead
Gamer4eva (on 07 February 2009)
overtracked by 600k?

what.
Aj_habfan (on 03 February 2009)
According to that same article Mario Kart Wii only 8.94 million units, which is ridiculous. Obviously territories or something to that affect are missing.

MKWii is finally ahead of this in the Americas. They came out the same week, but it took this long for MK to catch up. That's the meaning of legs.

This was a decent outing looking back on it now
matte.lova (on 13 November 2008)
Combined (PS3+X360) it is actualy the best seller of this "nextgen". (but Wiifit is coming).
Egghead (on 10 November 2008)
Currently 11 million, San Andreas did 18 million on PS2, i think lifetime itll be 15 million, fantastic as its only 3 million behind when you consider the userbase of 360+PS3
piggychan (on 08 November 2008)
I wonder when we get the xbox 360 DLC stuff will the sales pick up again due to interest?
GTAIV08 (on 22 October 2008)
wont outsell san andreas even though its on 360 aswell
erikers (on 12 October 2008)
Just saw some new ad campaign for GTA 4. Looks like a holiday push that mentions the Pc version. Looks like this game might be going for COD 4's throat for second place in 360 sales.
piggychan (on 07 October 2008)
wooo 6 mill this week. thats very good .. now combined with the ps3 and 360 sales it needs to try and reach to last gen sales.
toastboy44562 (on 06 October 2008)
wow this will hit 6 million this week!
Aj_habfan (on 12 September 2008)
Nice to see you made a new account after getting banned vgcgamer, but do you have any actual points to argue? I realize I made a mathematical error, but whether it was 6% or 14% it doesn't change anything that I said.
jtb666 (on 12 September 2008)
Wow Aj_habfan, I never realised the PS2 sold 285 million.
Egghead (on 16 August 2008)
Amen to that, great post
Aj_habfan (on 16 August 2008)
What you fail to understand Vgcgamer, is that install base was way too low for this game to outsell San Andreas at this point. The install base was around 30 million when it was released and it is only around 35 million now.

For GTA4 to outsell it, it would have had to have over a 50% attach rate. No non-bundled game has, or ever will ever achieve that.

San Andreas sold 17 million on PS2, but has an attach rate of only 6%. It has also been selling for 4 years and had the advantage of being with the highest selling console in history.

GTA4 sold over 10 million on 35 million consoles - an attach rate of around 30%. That rate is more then any non-bundled game full priced game in history. It is almost impossible to get better then that.

If this game was released on an install base the size of the PS2's it would have crushed the sales of San Andreas.

As for the quality of San Andreas - It was highly recieved by reviewers as well, but it had more then it's fair share of complaints from fans about all the useless girlfriend, training, huge open areas, weak storyline, being way too big and plain and more.

These are the facts. Deal with them.
Egghead (on 15 August 2008)
Wow VGC, you make no sense whatsoever. First you bash it for not having enough sold despite only having what is at the time less than 30 mil userbase versus according to you 78 mil. And now you are whining the game isnt that great and somehow this has something to do with sales.
vgcgamer (on 15 August 2008)
My point egghead, is that GTA IV is not the be all and end all like many claim.

While it is true that SA was released during the holiday season and the PS2 had a bigger base (roughly 78M at the time - not 100M or 125M), look at all the advantages IV has had (long time to hype the game, new game engine, Euphoria, small PS3 library, etc. I listed below already).

R* could have made a better GTA which could have sold FAR better. It's most certainly far from perfect. In fact, what SA did was even more amazing considering all it's limitations.
Egghead (on 12 August 2008)
VGC, might i ask you, what the heck is your point? The PS2 had a 100 million userbase, PS3/360 userbase is currently only around 35 million, it doesnt take a genius to figure out thats WELL bellow. Also SA came out during the holiday, a HUGE factor.
vgcgamer (on 12 August 2008)
San Andreas on the PS2 single-handedly downplayed GTA IV on 360 and PS3 COMBINED. Have a peek at the numbers in case you need a refresher (10.73M of SA on PS2 > 9.67M of GTA IV on 360/PS3 through the first 10 weeks).

It will take a very long time for GTA IV to catch up to San Andreas at the rate of current gen console hardware sales (weak compared to PS2, esp. PS3) if it ever does (21.5M units through March 2008). A new console will be out before it reaches this number.
RockSmith372 (on 06 August 2008)
10 million total. nice...
Aj_habfan (on 01 August 2008)
Lol vgcgamer, one of the highest rated and selling games to date, released on a low install base 360 and PS3 console, still selling fairly strong, it's funny to see you spend all your time trying to downplay it =)
Egghead (on 26 July 2008)
VGC, its the best selling game of this gen, and on both 360 and PS3 it is set to be the best selling games there. In fact, the individual sales on the 360 are set to be the highest for any game this gen
Kyros (on 24 July 2008)
"The numbers speak for themselves."

Exactly best selling game this gen. Sold for every third HD console. Almost 10m copies. The numbers speak for themselves.

"GTA IV is far from perfect"

Nobody says its perfect. But its still one of the best games I played this year and its definitely the best game ever with a single-player play time of at least 30h.
vgcgamer (on 23 July 2008)
Kyros,
There's nothing to "downtalk". The numbers speak for themselves. However, if you objectively compare the this GTA vs. previous versions (like SA) then you will see it ain't "all that". Fanboys making GTA IV out to be the Holy Grail is what is truly weird. GTA IV is far from perfect and leaves a lot of room for improvement.
Kyros (on 21 July 2008)
@vgcgamer

You are weird. Trying to downtalk a game that has 9.8m copies sold after 3 months. By far the best selling game (thats not a freebie with a controller etc.) so far this gen. On a combined userbase of 35m consoles.

Is this compulsive? Because it sounds a bit deranged. ;-)
FaRmLaNd (on 19 July 2008)
The reality is things fluctuate from generation to generation. GTA IV wont reach SA levels most likely but that doesn't mean it isn't selling very well. Combined its sold 9.77 million copies. With 5 months left in the year, which includes the christmas season, GTA IV should do a few million more in sales. Maybe thats not as good as last gen but its still a lot.
vgcgamer (on 18 July 2008)
Hey guys, I think you are conveniently missing several key points too.

1) We're talking about 1 system (the PS2) vs. 2 (the UBER PS3 and the UBER 360 - two VASTLY superior systems by any measure...right???).

2) The LONG, long wait only gave R* even more opportunity to hype they game, which they did.

3) OVERHYPED/OVERRATED reviews only helped GTA IV. In reality, there is a lot of room for improvement. It was NOT perfect.

4) VERY small game libraries by comparison for 360 and the PS3 especially. This means less competition for gamers' money.

5) Releasing in April when hardly many other big-name games were coming out. HUGE advantage for GTA IV.

6) San Andreas was merely another GTA game running on the GTA III engine. Conversely, GTA IV was a quantum leap in graphics with euphoria and so on, being based on a NEW, VASTLY superior RAGE engine.

7) Can someone remind me how much it cost to develop this game? I think I about died the first time I heard the figure. Oh, and look up the cost to develop SA while you're at it.

Enough said.

Get a dose of reality people and quit writing like you have the brains of 12 year olds. Think.

I bet you after 8 weeks of Japan recieving this game GTA4 > 8 weeks of GTA SA

or the 12k week after that...

or the 7k week after that...

for a total of about 360k that SA has that these haven't had a chance to get yet....

Gearbox (on 01 July 2008)
vgcgamer...

THE PS2 HAD SUCH A HUGE FANBASE. did u take that into consideration. 100 million around the time of sanandreas compaired to 30million ish for this game..
wareagle372 (on 27 June 2008)
vgcgamer

You have to remember that SA came out during the holiday which means it would get alot more sales than any other time. When a full year with the holiday sales comes, GTA IV will slaughter SA
vgcgamer (on 27 June 2008)
It's official. San Andreas has just passed GTA IV in sales through week 8 (9.51M vs. 9.43M on 360 and PS3 combined!!!). Awesome for SA considering SA was 1) Last gen (poor graphics/no euphoria and on and on), 2) only launched on 1 system, and 3) didn't have near as much hype. The people have spoken. I knew this would happen.
Strategyking92 (on 26 June 2008)
MS, you idiots!!! Why didn't you bundle it!!??!?!?
toastboy44562 (on 24 June 2008)
this should not be compared to sa it should be compared to gta 3
wareagle372 (on 17 June 2008)
infinitely surpassing GTA's previous sales (combined of coarse).
FaRmLaNd (on 11 June 2008)
The sales are amazing considering its not the holidays and the series has a smaller userbase then last gen. It'll still sell like 15 million combined which is a success no matter which way you look at it.
Oemenia (on 05 June 2008)
8.5 sold so far, its tracked at around 9 mil here, so its overtracked by a bit, especially considering when publishers numbers are somewhat exaggerated
Kyros (on 02 June 2008)
"it just can't compete sales wise with GTA: San Andreas"

big surprise SA had 100m PS2, GTA4 has ~30mHD consoles. At 8.75m sold games in less than a month not selling as much as SA is a)not surprising and b) not exactly terrible
Bagaren85 (on 02 June 2008)
Great sales, awesome game.
Oemenia (on 01 June 2008)
Actually 360 software sales are a LOT better than the XBOX. Yeah its only ahead by 2 million in the first 18 months, but that doesnt include Halo 3 (though it had Gears). But importantly, the XBOX had two or three times as many games in the same period
vgcgamer (on 01 June 2008)
You're right. The PS2 DID have a huge install base. That's actually my point. PS2s sold like hotcakes from the time it was launched till even to this day. Last month 124k PS2s, 188k PS3s, 187k 360s, and 714k Wiis were sold in the US.

Only 2 months in the PS2s history has it sold less than what the PS3 sold last month (April of 2004 and last month). The PS3 has already had 9 other months where we've seen less than 180k units sold in the US.

With GTA IV saturation already high, it will be slow going from here on out based on PS3 and 360 sales (360 sales are much better, but are only comparable to first gen Xbox sales).
MontanaHatchet (on 31 May 2008)
Fun game, though subtitles are a necessity. But the driving system is superior.
Oemenia (on 31 May 2008)
Initially yes, they will drop like a rock, it wont stay like this for long, SA had MUCH more sustainable sales mainly due to holiday period but also the HUGE PS2 fanbase. But i think that eventually, it has the potential to hit 10-15 mil. Its wishful thinking, but this gen, games dont come out too often, hence itll stand out even more as the one and true killer app, but also, this is a game that just about anybody would and IMHO should buy.

The 360 and PS3 are going to be supported for a long time, and also the next GTA is AT LEAST 2 years away (most likely 3), so its got time to sell as well, but also by then itll have a larger userbase to sell on too.
Aj_habfan (on 30 May 2008)
And the fact that PS2's install base was monstrous.
MontanaHatchet (on 29 May 2008)
Thanks, VGCGamer, for ignoring the fact that San Andreas launched in October (near the holiday season).
vgcgamer (on 29 May 2008)
Wow! This IS amazing. When you COMBINE PS3 GTA IV sales with Xbox 360 GTA IV sales, you get GTA IV outselling San Andreas 45% in week 1 and 16% in week two.

Week 3 an week 4 saw sales BELOW San Andreas's by 2% and 9% respectively (not even including Japan numbers)!

This is extremely impressive for San Andreas, when you consider that the gaming industry was smaller in 2004, SA was exclusive to ONE system (PS2), and was still based on the old GTA III engine (very little improvement to graphics). Compare this to the overhyped GTA IV that is based on the brand new and advanced RAGE engine that uses euphoria!

I think GTA IV sales will level out, but as I had suspected it just can't compete sales wise with GTA: San Andreas. Check it out for yourself. Seeing IV sales drop like a rock was no surprise to me.

Oh well, time to move on to bigger and better things, MGS4, GRID, Far Cry 2, and so on.
FaRmLaNd (on 27 May 2008)
When NA data comes in GTA4 will be above halo 3 was at this point in its lifespan for the first time. Further proof that GTA4 should easily outsell halo 3 on the 360 alone.
damarine08 (on 26 May 2008)
The Best Game Yet.
Oemenia (on 25 May 2008)
Exactly, SA had a HUGE userbase to rely on, the fact that IV even comes close is amazing given the casual power of both the PS2 and SA
obieslut (on 24 May 2008)
Why is th eps3 always getting mentioned in this ection when the ps3 version of the game is also on this site
FaRmLaNd (on 23 May 2008)
8.39 million without Japan in 3 weeks. Thats absolutely amazing.
Kyros (on 22 May 2008)
"IV has only outsold SA by 500k copies in Europe in the first 3 weeks"

Wow you really try to find something bad with the sales do you? SA had a userbase of what? 100m PS2? And GTA4 outsold it? How can you spin that into something negative? More than 1 in 4 PS3 owners has it now. Just insane.
vgcgamer (on 22 May 2008)
vgcgamer posted 22/05/2008, 05:25
I'm not surprised by the numbers at all. Initial sales have been incredible. This was totally expected as the game was overhyped across the board (perfect scores from almost every reviewer, despite the numerous issues/complaints that have been raised by many players).

So, it doesn't surprise me that sales have dropped at a faster rate than with SA on the PS2. In fact, IV has only outsold SA by 500k copies in Europe in the first 3 weeks and that's taking into account BOTH systems (360 plus PS3)!

This indicates to me that most who intended to buy it, have already done so. Don't forget the limited base. It can surely grow, but April sales for the 360 in the US were a pathetic 188k units and 187k (even with GTA IV coming out at the end of the month). Compare this with the 714k units of Wii sold (nearly 2x both systems combined). Ouch!

It's still early, so let's see how it levels out. Look at SAs #'s on the PS2. It pounded out the sales week in and week out. IV will struggle to keep up IMO.
Kyros (on 21 May 2008)
"R* is probably only making about
$15-20 max per unit"

Doubt it they are no small developer that gets screwed by the publisher. 60$ per game 10 dollar for Sony, 12 dollar for the seller: leaves 38$. The 100 million include ads etc. so worstcase 30 * 8m = 240 million will have made them more money than every other game. And this after three weeks. Ridiculous.
wareagle372 (on 21 May 2008)
good explaination Montana.
MontanaHatchet (on 21 May 2008)
Well, a userbase can certainly grow over time, can't it? To say there are 12 million PS3s and 19 million Xbox 360s in the same sentence as the number of PS2s that have been sold (which is of course a much slower growing number then the current generation consoles), is ridiculous.

We can, by your numbers as of the San Andreas launch, estimate that the PS2 sells about 15 million a year. An impressive sum. Now, we almost have to do an anti-extrapolation with the PS3, which is a better console for comparison since it's selling faster than the 360. So, if we look at PS3 sales for 2007, it's at approximately 7.5 million, and it's doing quite a bit better this year. What we're looking at is a significant increase of userbase for the next 2 consoles leading up to the 2008 holiday season.

Also, remember that with smaller userbases comes smaller sales, but also larger attach rates. The Gamecube's top selling game and the Xbox's top selling game had a lot higher attach rate than San Andreas to the PS2's userbase. Of course, this is all a proven fact given that a larger userbase comes with more casual users.

So while Grand Theft Auto IV might not sell as much as the PS2 iterations, we're still looking at very large sales. And yes, the humongous development costs and licensing fees will take away from that. It's a shame, as Take 2 needs lots of money to fight away EA.

Ahh well, just don't get too snippy now.
vgcgamer (on 21 May 2008)
Mont, I guess you can't read either. Nowhere in my post did I state or make the assumption that the number of PS2s on the market now (127M) is the same number as was in 2004. Your own inference, right?

127M is the number of PS2s sold through 2007. You can check out Wikipedia for verification. It's a number backed up by numerous other sites as well (too many to list).

BTW, at the time San Andreas was released there were between 70-80M PS2s on the market worldwide.

My numbers can be backed up and you can't provide any contradictory evidence. Perhaps, you should save your own face.
MontanaHatchet (on 21 May 2008)
So Vgcgamer, what you're telling me is, that you're fabricated number of Playstation 2s sold so far (127 million) is equal to the amount of PS2s that had been sold back when San Andreas launched back in 2004?

I can't look up the exact number right now, but next time, try to read and think before you post. You could really save face.
vgcgamer (on 21 May 2008)
Kyros, you must not understand much about business. You didn't read my post. R* is probably only making about $15-20 max per unit after everyone gets paid. Initial investment was ENORMOUS (100 million) and that is much, much more than San Andreas. At $20 net profit per unit, this amounts to $160 million net. Sounds great, but you have to subtract the $100M in dev costs. IV has a LONG, LONG way to go to even get close to San Andreas (sold 21.5M units so far according to R*). I doubt IV will be able to keep up with the much smaller PS3 and 360 base.

Sales of next-gen hardware have been pretty pathetic (Only 12M PS3s and 19M 360s out there. By comparison there are over 127M PS2s!). Next time read and think before you speak.

"I don't know if R* is satisfied or not."

LOL they sold over 8 in words eight million copies in 3 weeks. I have the slight suspicion that they are satisfied. Unbelievable.
vgcgamer (on 21 May 2008)
I don't know if R* is satisfied or not. With every sales a portion goes to MS or Sony for licensing fees. A portion goes to the retailer for specified amount bulit-in profit (meaning they are getting game at a wholesale price). Then there's the cost of boxing and shipping the game to retailers. Lastly, you have the cost to develop (100 million) plus any extra unaccounted costs.
Kyros (on 21 May 2008)
wow total over 8 million already. If I am not mistaken the only game which sold more this gen is Call of duty4 (and packins like Wii sports) After 2.5 weeks lol

I am pretty sure Rockstar is pretty satisfied with the amount sold right now. They did break the record for most sold games in a day and week
Oemenia (on 16 May 2008)
Confirmed, this will beat Halo 3, and SMG as well as SSBB are on their way too, though thats because 360 sales in JAP are non-existent
Picko (on 15 May 2008)
Had impressive second week legs compared to Halo 3.
okr (on 14 May 2008)
It will pass GoW in 1 or 2 weeks. Extremely impressive.
Tuanniez (on 14 May 2008)
Pretty close to having the opening week of halo 3
Myahon (on 11 May 2008)
This game is horribly over rated. It's good and everything it says it is but seriously.
Griffin (on 11 May 2008)
I'm surprised this game could not pass Halo3 for first week sales.
FaRmLaNd (on 11 May 2008)
And Rockstar wouldn't have made as much money and they'd probably have gone bankrupt.
Username2324 (on 11 May 2008)
@iptolife
The game probably would have been better as a PS3 exclusive, Rockstar would have been able to lead on PS3 and done more with the game.
jptolife (on 09 May 2008)
Good for R* to release it for 360 too. All the ps3 fanboys cried but as a company they want to make money and definitely did! Very nice R*
Foshoryuken (on 07 May 2008)
Damn. That was pretty quick.

teh Awesome!
FaRmLaNd (on 06 May 2008)
EU is the real battle because its actually going to be close. The US isn't a battle as the 360 version will easily outsell the ps3 version.
Oemenia (on 06 May 2008)
EU is the real battle, MS are claiming its theirs with only 360 at the end, and Sony have the bundle.

PS3 will win, its userbase is only a million less, and there arent as many titles on the PS3, hence theyll drift towards GTA which is exactly that
zutaty (on 06 May 2008)
if in UE sale have same number thats could be a great success for 360, but wait and see
Oemenia (on 06 May 2008)
Yeah i made mistake, i thought they were EU sales
zutaty (on 06 May 2008)
no surprise, 360 selling a 11m for only 4m ps3 so.....
whatever (on 06 May 2008)
@Oemenia

Sorry to burst your bubble, but these ARE NA numbers. When the others numbers come in, I'm sure they will be much better for the PS3.
Oyvoyvoyv (on 06 May 2008)
Why is 2317K rounded to 2.32M? Seems odd to me...

Will two weeks GTA IV X360 > two weeks Halo 3?
--OkeyDokey-- (on 06 May 2008)
Now that's a big first week of sales.
It did even better than San Andreas (but I expect the dropoff to be much more severe)
wareagle372 (on 05 May 2008)
This game is already in the top 10 best selling 360 games, and it will be in the top three in 2 weeks.
dante (on 30 April 2008)
this game just gets better and better the further u get into it
squall747 (on 30 April 2008)

squall747 (on 28 April 2008)
Does anyone know how to leave a score for a game? I thought it used to be on the page with the game but I do not see it anymore? At least I thought it was...

GTA 4 tomorrow I got high hopes for this one.
SleepWaking (on 26 April 2008)
YAY I just finished it, great game (although not the best game since OOT IMO)
darklich13 (on 15 April 2008)

I hope this hits 10 million, if only so it'll at least break the mold of 10 million xbox 360 sellers that aren't bundled or are a FPS.
VGKing (on 23 January 2012)
Wow never knew Capcom published this game in Japan.
newwil7l (on 17 January 2012)
