Always thought this was a weird cover for a Star Ocean game. At least in the west, that is.
Adamx509 (on 12 June 2012)
Great gameplay,fine story,annoying characters...
yo_john117 (on 24 September 2011)
Looks like FF

Star Ocean
piggychan (on 24 February 2010)
wow nightwish thanks for that link... gonna grab some popcorn and watch the fighting begin on both sides of the consoles XD
Nightwish224 (on 08 February 2010)
Looks like the 360 version is still coming out on top.
Boneitis (on 26 January 2010)
I've had this game for about a month now... I might play it one day.
Mad55 (on 02 January 2010)
iu no way too short
tphi (on 29 December 2009)
Infinite Undiscovery is much better...
mrstickball (on 26 December 2009)
I have about 6 hours into the game. I rented it for the Christmas work break, and figured I could either beat it, or get close to beating it by then.

The camera during exploration SUCKS. Otherwise, its a good game - much better than IU, which uses the same engine.

The other thing I dislike is the battle bonus board - losing all your gems after you re-load a save is retarded. I had a great +7 SP bonus that I wanted to keep. It'd be nice if you could keep at least half of the gems after loading.
spacetattoo82 (on 21 December 2009)
great game, under rated....

after 4-5 hours in it gets a lot better.
ClaudeLv250 (on 04 December 2009)
And an amazing spinoff at that.
Son1x (on 23 October 2009)
Blue Sphere is considered a spin-off.
Mutiverse37 (on 19 October 2009)
Does anybody know why this is always called Star Ocean 4? It is actually the fifth game if you count Blue Sphere. We never got Blue Sphere in USA so I can see why we might consider it Star Ocean 4 here, but I was surprised that even the Japanese gamers refer to it as Star Ocean 4.
Nightwish224 (on 05 October 2009)
As much as I love Star Ocean, I'm glad I didn't have to wait for it. I'd rather have my game now as I previously stated before. Go have your almost year later game, because I've already played it.
Skeeuk (on 20 September 2009)
im ove 2 hours in and im struggling to enjoy it.

the cam and running movements are really faulty, why could they not have made it smooth.

great grafix and music, but i hate the battle themes.
Nightwish224 (on 20 September 2009)
Yeah I agree, I'd rather get the game first. There are so many other games coming out to begin with. SO for 360 came out at a perfect time for me. I actually had sufficient time to play it.
Barozi (on 18 September 2009)
That was my reason to buy a console over a PC ugrade.
I'm sick of waiting for ports.
I LOVE GIGGS (on 10 September 2009)
Yeah, great battle system
Nightwish224 (on 29 August 2009)
When I play other rpgs, I really miss my SO battle system. Ah, it's that good.
ROBOTECHHEAVEN (on 27 August 2009)
really liked the game alot, its my 3rd favorite jrpg on the 360. only behind lost odyssey and infinite undiscovery.
NeoStar9 (on 20 August 2009)
Looks like it's doing well sales wise. Not a mega seller but still I'm sure they've made their money back by now and are in the profit area.
I LOVE GIGGS (on 17 August 2009)
finished it today.
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 12 August 2009)
IMO one of the Xbox 360's BEST, if it wasn't for this game i would not own a 360 today, its THAT good...

Though the day a PS3 version is annouced, after doing a comparisson selling the 360 version.
Rawnchie14 (on 12 August 2009)
It's a solid game, good times.
coolbeans (on 12 August 2009)
Hopefully it drops to $30 in price soon. Don't really want to spend $50 new for it with other games coming out.
Zezlar (on 12 August 2009)
This is a very good game, but it suffered in reviews due to critics having a JRPG bug up their ass.

I wish I could have bought it for PS3, but it is a must buy for the generation. Good story, Good combat, Good game play. and Good VA except for Sarah.
reaver_x (on 11 August 2009)
the game's battle system is pretty top notch. its a shame the characetrs and the story arent as good b/c this had the potential of being one of the best RPG's out there
I LOVE GIGGS (on 10 August 2009)
I finished the firs disk. I love the game. I recommend it.
LordMatrix (on 08 August 2009)
On another note I'm happy to see this reach Gold status by reaching the half million mark. :) Next week Infinite Undiscovery will do the same. Shame Tales of Vesperia wasn't up there with them in sales though. :(
LordMatrix (on 08 August 2009)
lol at those fighting to not buy it out of PS3 fanboyism. There isn't even a guarantee a PS3 version is coming. Stop punishing yourself and by SO:TLH already. The games is quite fun trust me!
piggychan (on 06 August 2009)
ooo it got adjusted down by 20k !!
FootballFan (on 05 August 2009)
Ill pick up the PS3 version.
Mutiverse37 (on 03 August 2009)

I agree. Mass Effect is the best RPG of this gen and the reason I purchased a 360 in the first place. I can't wait for ME 2
Munkeh111 (on 02 August 2009)
Only 20... maybe next summer if there is still no PS3 version then
kiefer23 (on 31 July 2009)
@Nightwish, Lost Odyssey was much better.
Nightwish224 (on 29 July 2009)
PS3 version denied again :)
piggychan (on 29 July 2009)
the battle system and item creation are one of the best, I enjoyed the battles more than Tales of Vesperia.. It's just the director decided it was a great idea to bring back his childhood memories of making the story and cut scenes resemble a childrens sci fi pupet show
indodude (on 29 July 2009)
I want to get this game, but many people say it's not good =/. I'll probably get this game eventually, maybe within a year if a PS3 version isn't announced.

@ Nightwish224
Mass Effect.
Nightwish224 (on 27 July 2009)
Best RPG on 360 to date. Also the best rpg for this generation.
ROBOTECHHEAVEN (on 23 July 2009)
very good game, just like infinite undiscovery. tri-ace is 2/2 on the 360 so far.
Adobo (on 23 July 2009)
i'll get this when it drop to 9.99 at futureshop. hehe
Bagaren85 (on 18 July 2009)
No price drop where i live.
Nightwish224 (on 16 July 2009)
Okay people, there has been a price drop. Please get it. Thanks!! You're missing out if you don't ;)
coolbeans (on 15 July 2009)
at for gamestop, not sure about other retail stores.
coolbeans (on 15 July 2009)
Price dropped to $50 now :).
MonstaMack (on 15 July 2009)
Game is selling better then I thought it would. Still 300k+ to get near Lost Odyssey but with legs you never know.
kiefer23 (on 13 July 2009)
Glad to see this selling in Europe.
Must be hurting Vesperia's European sales badly which I'm happy about. Having to wait 10 months after the US release for a European release is bullshit especially when an enhanced port is coming out for the Playstation 3 in 2 months.
Serves Namco Bandia right.
Seece (on 10 July 2009)
Can this crawl to 600k? that will be a nice number for it to hit
Nightwish224 (on 08 July 2009)
Great numbers!! :)
reaver_x (on 08 July 2009)

well its hard for me to admit but it definitely seems that way. Ppl claim all the rpg lovers are on PS3 but if thats the case how come the games dont sell much there???

Even games like VC that get stellar reviews are being outsold by games like this and TLR which got less than stellar reviews. that just proves FFXIII will sell more on 360 at least in America
Slimebeast (on 08 July 2009)
Wow 500,000 copies!

The X360 surely is the JRPG king.
reaver_x (on 08 July 2009)
it hit 500k wow lol. and it got it a lot faster than VC did
Mutiverse37 (on 06 July 2009)
If the mass Japanese RPG loving fans of the Star Ocean franchise want to miss out.........let them. It is there loss and Tri-Ace will remember that in future games they develop. It is like I have said again and again. Support the developer; not the console maker. That is a lesson the average Japanese gamer has not yet figured out.
pablogers (on 05 July 2009)
worst rpg story ever....
penguin (on 02 July 2009)
@ TheConduit
Look how many weeks this has been on sale in others only 3 weeks look how much longer valkyrie chronicles has been available, Star ocean is by far outselling valkyrie chronicles and will pass it in the next couple of weeks.
Loving all these 360 Jrpgs ..
Lurker (on 28 June 2009)
Closing in on 500k. Not too shabby considering the reviews for it weren't all that great.
kiefer23 (on 27 June 2009)
70 hours into it now. I'm an RPG completionist. I need to get 1000/1000 for all my Xbox Rpgs. To bad this isn't selling very well. How come America no longer likes Star Ocean lol.
invetedlotus123 (on 27 June 2009)
This is holding LEGS in EU !!!. May follow the same way of Infinity Undiscovery and Eu version outsell the Japanese version with the legs.

360 JRPG showing legs now, this show us something right?
Nightwish224 (on 24 June 2009)
@ Crystalchild

The combat alone motivated me to the end. I did like the story too. I wish I was still playing it!! Must move on to PSP versions lol.
Crystalchild (on 22 June 2009)
sales are "okay", for an RPG released on 360 only.
@game: i really enjoy the game, but i played just 8 hours. i hope it motivates me till the end.
tonio_13 (on 22 June 2009)
@Soriku, this games has been advertised in eu (which is extremely rare for a jrpg), + it is translated.
It would be a shame if it does'nt reach SO3 numbers
Bagaren85 (on 22 June 2009)
Some hours into, im pleased. Good game. And sales arent that bad.
elzumo (on 21 June 2009)
Yeah, I did too.
FilaBrasileiro (on 21 June 2009)
I regret buying this game
Soriku (on 21 June 2009)
The game released in EU already? O_o

Wonder if it'll outsell SO3 in EU (sold 110k according to VGC numbers).
MorgZ (on 20 June 2009)
15 hours in now and still really enjoying it, unfortunately work commitments are stopping me from playing it more but Im looking forward to the rest of the game. If EU sales can reach 100k then the game could reach 600k sales which I hope would be perceived as reasonable by SE
Xen (on 19 June 2009)
tri-Ace have said that the engine is adaptable to any platform, so a port is possible.
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 19 June 2009)
Good sales of a SO game, can't wait for a PS3 Upgraded tweaked version with more characters, dungeons AND online.

When it pulls a ToV ima gonna sale my 360 version and wait for MC II for 360.

The benifets of owning both HD consoles are a wonderland.
Nightwish224 (on 18 June 2009)
I've heard things that Microsoft funded the engine for this game. It makes me doubt a PS3 version for this. Yet you never know these days! I'm just glad I have it, and completed it. One of my favorite jrpgs for sure.
Zezlar (on 17 June 2009)
One of the best JRPGs this gen, a must buy. Only downfall is that stupid disk swap to go to previous areas.
Seece (on 17 June 2009)
600k lifetime? that would be a solid number I think ...
piggychan (on 17 June 2009)
btw did they fix the screen res for the EU release. I got mine set higher than 720p and had no game freezes yet. near the end of game now
djevolve420 (on 17 June 2009)
this game is awsome, you want a all out rpg, this what you should buy.
Nightwish224 (on 17 June 2009)
Yeah, but it's still no justification for stating a "crappy launch." I did compare those two games, and it may not have been the best comparison... but more importantly I just wish people would try out the game more. It's highly detailed, interactive, and engaging... kay? :) Ahhh I'm still torn on getting a psp for the other two games.
coolbeans (on 16 June 2009)
lol, somehow I missed that :P fair to say then your right munkeh but there really any reason to say "I can't wait to play this on 1 disc when/if it comes to PS3"? Even you should realize how unneeded that is.
Munkeh111 (on 16 June 2009)
@ coolbeans, here is a nice quote from you:

Only said that because Munkeh is probably a PS3 fanboy and had no reason putting "being on 1 disc" thus losing even more respect for him.
Riachu (on 16 June 2009)
I don't get why the game didn't sell a little better in NA. It may had some serious complaints but there were actual TV commercials for the game. It just seems like TV commercials aren't effective anymore.
pearljammer (on 16 June 2009)
More importantly... why even bring Valkyria Chronicles up... Egghead hadnt even mentioned it.
pearljammer (on 16 June 2009)
@Nightwish224: Youre comparing apples to oranges. Valkyria Chronicles is a SRPG... I ask you to find another SRPG that blows its sales out of the water (except FFT, of course).

Secondly, Valkyria Chronicles is incredibly hyped over the internet through word of mouth. Much like Tales of Vesperia, actually.
coolbeans (on 16 June 2009)
Call you a fanboy by word I mean
coolbeans (on 16 June 2009)
Umm, Munkeh just wanna point out I never called a fanboy by word in here.
DirtyP2002 (on 16 June 2009)
I predicted this would be a million-seller. guess I was wrong. Expected MUCH better sales in NA. But >500k is still okay.
Dark_Rulez89 (on 16 June 2009)
Solid numbers if ya ask me..I just want Square-Enix to slash the price to 50 dollars so i can get it:p
Munkeh111 (on 15 June 2009)
Okay, but not enough to justify not taking it to the PS3
MorgZ (on 15 June 2009)
im now 15 hours in and really enjoying it. Best JRPG on the 360 since Lost Oddysey. Shame its not going to push huge numbers but surely 500k would be considered as OK sales?
Egghead (on 15 June 2009)
After all that advertising and still a crappy launch?
Xen (on 15 June 2009)
As for as it goes... Europe fails once more.
Munkeh111 (on 15 June 2009)
@ coolbeans, I have a PS3 and a 360, and my jRPG loving friend advised me that it was not such a great game, so there was no need to get it at launch. However, I do like SOs, I enjoyed the part of SO 3 that I played, and I feel that having it on 1 disc is superior.
May I point out the reason that I think this is such a problem, is because in the IGN review they warned that once you finish the game, you cannot just continue playing just on disc 3, you will have to change discs to go back to old planets, unlike Lost Odyssey.
I don't get why what I said makes me a fanboy, and I don't appriechiate the accusation.

Anyway, in terms of sales it is okay, but there was a lot of TV advertising, so they probably would have been expecting more
tombi123 (on 15 June 2009)
Actually a pretty good first week for a JRPG in Europe.

I saw it advertised on TV, which surprised me.
I LOVE GIGGS (on 15 June 2009)
Better first week in Other than what I expected.
I hope it will have good leg.

I think it will sell 60k eventually
scourge29 (on 14 June 2009)
i knew this game will be a failure, i just hope square enix made a profit
Egghead (on 14 June 2009)
Good sales so far and NPD is tracking somewhere similar. I think this game will be quite big in EU due to the marketing.
TheConduit (on 14 June 2009)
Wow great sales
Almost as much half the last iteration
coolbeans (on 11 June 2009)
outlawaroun, that's not the point at all of what I was trying to convey when answering back to Munkeh's comment. View what he said, I never disregarded having this game on one disc was a bad thing.
outlawauron (on 11 June 2009)
@ coolbeans

Well you have to change discs to go to certain planets. So yes, being on one disc would have helped tremendously.

@ Naum

I had to use a FAQ to get all the PAs.
Naum (on 11 June 2009)
Pretty decent so far, but the most annoying thing yet is when Edge became Emo, luckily it passed.

Quite easy to miss some ff the Character PA's.
FilaBrasileiro (on 10 June 2009)
This game is okay, not as good as previous iterations, but it's still okay....
pearljammer (on 10 June 2009)
I'm really not enjoying this game. I'm on Disc 3 and am finding it difficult to get motivated to complete it.

I wouldn't recommend it to most JRPG fans, the dialogue is cheesy, the entire game is inexplicably bright, the story is okay and the voice acting ranges from good to incredibly annoying.

I especially dislike whenever there is a turning point for any given character or the group is about act/embark on a certain mission, they always each have a one liner to deliver... the dialogue is just that awful.

It's one saving grave is it's fantastic battle system. Unfortunately, it's somewhat marred with a horrid targeting system.

My advice, get Tales of Vesperia if you haven't already. Much better in every aspect than this...

I was hopeful too, after enjoying SO 1 & 2 on PSP.
CaptainDJ (on 10 June 2009)
I'm buying this when it's like $30.
coolbeans (on 10 June 2009)
Ummm...I think you completely missed the point. Only said that because Munkeh is probably a PS3 fanboy and had no reason putting "being on 1 disc" thus losing even more respect for him.
Fenristh (on 10 June 2009)
Why? Switching back to the previous disc to go back to a previous area is stupid. That's like switching back to disc 1 to go back to Midgar in FFVII to get Tifa's weapon, that would be annoying as fuck.
coolbeans (on 10 June 2009)
Pointing out "on 1 disc" just made me lose more respect for you munk, sorry ;).
Munkeh111 (on 10 June 2009)
The game won't sell great in others, apart from FF they never do. I think the PS3 port is inevitable, and I am waiting for that for the game being on 1 disc
coolbeans (on 10 June 2009)
Does anyone think this is worth buying? Or should I hold off and wait for it's price to drop a little bit?
coolbeans (on 10 June 2009)
CrystalChild, I'm not sure what your trying to say since any company can see it's the better selling for HD consoles so anything will do better on it in terms of sales (better possibility). Plus I don't think you've noticed, this hasn't even released in others so you never know how well it may possibly sell there.
Crystalchild (on 10 June 2009)
Square is so stupid bringing so much games only on 360. as everyone can see in that sales: the 360 is just the wrong console for exclusive RPGs.. if they were making shooters, okay. but rpgs?
MorgZ (on 09 June 2009)
bought it in UK, 4 hours in soo far and its really good. The combat is really fun soo far and it seems to be a level up from Last Remnant and Indfinite Discover from my initial impressions. Very steady Frame rate soo far as well and pretty short loads (havent even installed it yet).
Horrorfest (on 08 June 2009)
Could have been a million combined if there was a PS3 version.
EaglesEye379 (on 06 June 2009)
Got this on 4 June and have been hooked since. Best JRPG since LO. Definitely better than IU and TLR imho. Although the story is basic, it has good pacing, and the combat is really fun, more fun than the battles in TLR. Also the characters are much more likeable than in IU.
piggychan (on 06 June 2009)
finally it arrived!!got the limited collectors edition EU
outlawauron (on 27 May 2009)
Is that 42k the amount shipped to Europe?
outlawauron (on 27 May 2009)
This may get passed by Valkyria in America. Crazy.
Dark_Rulez89 (on 19 May 2009)
42k according to S.E Not bad
Nightwish224 (on 19 May 2009)
This game really was jaw dropping. The visuals and combat were amazing. Sure the character voicing was annoying at times.... yet what jrpg isn't? Once again, I want to stress the fun and interactive combat, along with the spectacular visuals. It's the nicest looking jrpg that is currently released in my opinion!!
Max King of the Wild (on 19 May 2009)
40k on shelves is respectable number good job vgc
tedsteriscool (on 19 May 2009)
@Avarice28: Much like the majority of SE games recently eh?
Avarice28 (on 18 May 2009)
@Mutiverse37 I do not believe in supporting mediocrity and I believe this game just did not live up to all the hype.
Carl2291 (on 18 May 2009)
Want this to release in UK... NOW!
Egghead (on 17 May 2009)
Officially the best selling game on the 360 according to VGC in Japan. Now its got to beat DOA3.

Hopefully with sales its been showing recently, that wont be too hard
outlawauron (on 13 May 2009)
@ Mutliverse

What now? I can't really say I'd recommend this RPG to anyone. It's fun but even Infinite Undiscovery was better than this.
Egghead (on 10 May 2009)
Yep and its been selling really nicely, itll hit 220k mark, but in about a years time, it has the chance of hitting 240k.
LordMatrix (on 10 May 2009)
This is going to be the top selling xbox 360 game in japan very soon. Next week Blue Dragon will fall to the the new king!
Squall_Leonhart (on 10 May 2009)
I can't buy this yet... Damn not being released in the EU yet!! You will never get out of your old ways will you SE!!
Mutiverse37 (on 09 May 2009)
I still think anyone who refuses to but this work of art just because they don't like the console it is on don't deserve the game to begin with. Be loyal to the developer; not a console maker. I have a 360 not because I like it or dislike it. I don't care. I support the developers who actually make the games I like. Don't miss out. Buy the game.
Egghead (on 09 May 2009)
Thats a respectable number given that MS funded the engine which in turn lowered the cost of this game SEVERELY

Its going to go multi eventually though dont expect it anytime soon, the game is still moving hardware
Dark_Rulez89 (on 07 May 2009)
500k by the time it hits other,I need this game:)
Egghead (on 07 May 2009)
Also, the fact that its holding on well in Japan could mean that the 360 finally has a title that will continue to sell for a while

Just about every other 360 game drops off the map hence its so hard to see where the software sales are going but if this continues to sell till the end of the year you can expect it to be moving hardware.
piggychan (on 05 May 2009)
argghhh 1 more month till it hits europe. I'm pre ordering this... why the heck was this delayed so much compared to the other SE X360 Euro releases?
Egghead (on 04 May 2009)
Next week itll outdo BD.

Still the attach ratio is good as the console has moved a little bit more mainstream.

The sales seem to be holding up quite well too. As we know, BD just sold on and on and on, could this do the same? I could see it reaching 230k...
coolbeans (on 03 May 2009)
lol when you look at the Japan-only attach rate, that'd be about 20%. Shame that 360 doesn't sell as well over there.
Hero_time88 (on 03 May 2009)
If other typicall PS2 franchises on the PS3 give any indication I'd say yes.
Soriku (on 03 May 2009)
Yeah...I highly doubt it would have reached 1 mil on the PS3.
outlawauron (on 02 May 2009)
@ Infamous

No it will not! Star Ocean 3 has only has 90k on the PS2. This will be very lucky to pass that.
jpain333 (on 02 May 2009) wouldnt be any better on the ps3, better sales in japan but mostly likely weaker sales in the states....fanboys just love to complain really..
Gearbox (on 02 May 2009)
@ Infamous -

u no i think it would have sold MUCH better on the ps3 when i think about it. less competition on the ps3 for jrpgs, massive opening in japan. and there are more jrpg fans on the ps3 then 360 (just a lot of them own 360s aswell)
Infamous (on 01 May 2009)
Rofl@ the guy below me, keep dreaming. Wouldn't even be close to 1m if it was PS3 exclusive; all it would have is a larger Japan opening.

Anyways, 500k a bit after it's released in Europe.
oliminator1994 (on 30 April 2009)
possibly would be a million seller if it was a PS3 exclusive?
SlipperyMooseCakes (on 29 April 2009)
It's selling well compared to the others in the series with the exception of perhaps two. It is yet to be released in Europe and when it does it should obviously see a boost. I'm going to guess a lifetime sales around 500,000 which isn't bad for a jrpg exclusive on the 360.
andrewclear (on 28 April 2009)
Ok, max, let me put some stuff into perspective for you. Number 1, most developers never see a penny from royalties on there games, that's just how the business is.

Third party developers (like tri-ace) have to pitch their ideas to a publisher in order to get funding tp develop a game. It's the same basic principal as the movie industry.

The third party developer needs to over budget a little, or come in under budget, for the company to guarantee a profit. After that, it depends on how much the game grosses. There is usually a set amount of money the game must make before the developer will see royalties. Publishers get the bulk of the revenue (if not all) of a game, but they finance the development of the game. The publishers decide if the game is going to be exclusive, not the developer.

Some third party developers get financing from other sources than publishers. After that, they have to shop their game around for a publisher, and sometimes the game will never see the light of day and the developer is screwed on their gamble. Those situations, the developer can get a better shake, depending on how they work their contract.

Tri-ace didn't get to decide on Infinite Undiscovery, cause that was originally a Microsoft Game Studios project. Microsoft made a deal with SE, and SE was able to publish it. Who knows if Star Ocean was part of that deal, and maybe even FFXIII.

And no, Mistwalker isn't a MS studio. Mistwalker is an independent game design company. They don't code any of their games, only design them. Artoon developed Blue Dragon, and Feelplus (which is a Microsoft company, that was created to assist Mistwalker) developed Lost Odyssey.

Mistwalker didn't cancel CryOn, the publisher did. Only thing I know for certain that mistwalker is making right now is a sequel to Blue Dragon for the DS (not blue dragon plus, which is out, but a sequel that takes place two years later).

There is no guarantee White Knight Chornicles will sell well in the west. I've read enough import reviews to know that it doesn't fair well here.

Andrew - ToV isn't sold in US anymore. Granted you can buy a used one BUT someone browsing best buys shelves who is interested in a hd console wont see that. most likely they'll see a ps3 version. "the chances of that are..." yeah i know you dont think it'll happen nut the chances of xedge coming westward were worse. but it did happen. also, ToV is already being ported and they alreadly have the voice acting. so for virtually no cost (some english VA for new character, manufacturing, and shipping) they could bring it to the US which would be a VERY smart business move. it'll be pure profit and recoup some losses recieved. (even if it sold a petty 50k the decision would be justifiable) also reviewers think VC > LO but thats all opinion. (but tell that to someone who hasnt bought HD yet and hasnt played either yet and all they know is the metascore of each)

MS paid for IU because IU is a MS IP.

what's better 360 sales x income or PS360 sales x income - dev cost.

well lets find out. according to studies about 27 dollars goes to the devs. according to you about 250k copies to break even. so 6.75 million dev cost. (27 x .25). i can agree with that.

So for .34 x 27 = 9.18

now we dont have sales for ps3 but looking at WKC a new IP with low famitsu score and not a huge fane base like SO considering its a new IP I'd say the ps3 version would easily do .34 in japan alone! but ill be nice and just say .34. now to figure dev cost. it would be close to 6.75 million for one game but for a port itd be more i'll be generous and say half of a normal dev cost (i've seen estimates putting ports at a tenth of cost so mine are generous) so .25 x 1.5 x 27 = 10 million for cost of development for ps3 so our formula looks like this .68 for ps360 sales x 27 - 10 million.

.68 x 27 = 18.36 - 10 = 8.36.

so far 360 exclusive > multiplat but there is no EU sales yet. lets say half of NA sales at 75k.

75k x 27 = 2 + 9.18 = 11.18.

150k x 27 = 4 + 8.36 = 12.36.

12.36 > 11.18 and remember ps3 sales, cost of port greatly favor the 360 exclusive side. hell these also assume sales will stop at 400k. which also favor the 360.

not only would it be more profitable not allowing MS to money hat them but they would also sell closer to a million. "why does that even matter?" you may be asking yourself well here is the answer. sales might be hurt by future titles because they castrated themselves for their fanbase. so not only did 360 exclusive not pay off immediately but it also might come round and bite em in the ass if they make SO5 and get 400k sales because thats how many fans are left since the 1.5million who bought 2 and 3 couldnt buy 4.

i said less than 10 dollars and more than 15million. and you dont know what that 15 mil represents. it isnt how much i think MS gave them but its how much MS should of paid them to make the game 360 exclusive. Now i could of just ran one by you and used the 15mil figure to make my arguement look better but i wont (hell i dont need to). I believe MS paid at least 7 million for dev cost (the figue we used earlier). now .34 x 10 does not equal 34mil. instead it equals 3.4 million. which means SO4 must sell at least .36 more copies to make this a good desicion for MS. hell if you want to say MS threw in a little extra to make tri ace happier lets say they threw in an extra 1million dollars (8million total.) that still makes 12.36 >12.11 but puts MS another 100k away. Now remember MS is not publisher nor developer 10 dollars is again a generous estimate in favor of MS.

looks like both sides lost money here which means IT SHOULD OF BEEN MULTIPLAT!

dude go look at multiplats in japan. the ones japanese actually want. its like a 20:2 ratio for the ps3. ff13 in japan for 360 would be worse than that. ff13 wouldnt kill the ps3.

and SE isnt doing it for the ps3 but for themselves. they are hurting to gain back money from losses. they NEED to release a high calibur game. They cant just have the ps3 version done sittin around on the shelves gathering dust for 4 months waiting for the 360 version to be complete to be released same day as ps3. and releasing it afterwards wouldnt make much sense considering everyone and their mother will have it by then.

Mistwalker isnt MS studio... im pretty sure they are making a wii game. in fact they cancelled cry on

@ andrew

You realize a lot of what you just said isn't true.

The game part is your opinion, but everything else.....
andrewclear (on 19 April 2009)

360 still is the best for JRPGS in america, hands down. LO is by far the best JRPG of this gen so far. Sure VC is ok, but ToV is better in my opinion.

Also SE is making plenty of money off of the games that have been released. Most japanese studios break even at 250k sales. Also, I don't know if MS paid for all the exclusives, or whether it's just that their machine was the first one on the market. Infinite Undiscovery was funded by Microsoft, cause it was supposed to be published by Microsoft Game Studios, but, MS and SE made a deal to switch publishers. That engine is also the engine use to make Star Ocean, and who knows, probably this new game tri-ace is making for Sega.

Also, if you take into account that MS is making 10 dollars a copy of a game, then Star Ocean has made them 34 million so far. That would justify shelling out 15 million for an exclusive, that brought in a few more japanese gamers.

The reality is, SE is making sure that the PS3 isn't killed off by the 360. If they would release a 360 version of FFXIII in japan, that would kill the PS3, and thus, SE said they will never make one for japan. In reality, it's a stupid financial decision, since they already have all the code, and voice acting in place (and Crystal Tools is a cross platform engine). They could easily release a 360 version for japan when they release it for America.

In the end, I think the exclusives on JRPG's are coming to an end on the PS3 and 360, except Sony first party games, and Microsoft Game Studio games (ie, Mistwalker titles).

The wii is going to be the new home for JRPG's this gen, whether we like it or not.

aga - WKC, cross edge, VC, Alteir, Disgea all exclusive to the ps3... SO (for how long these sales dont justify being exclusive) mediocre IU, LO, BD 360 exclusive... looks to me 360 is NOT the console to buy for jrpgs. especially since the best one of those is ps3 exclusive.

i said to learn english because you were putting words in my mouth. you kept saying i said it should be ps3 exclusive. but i said it should be multiplat.

ports are cheap. they are nowhere near the full cost of developing from ground up. in fact ports probablly only need like 150k sales to justify the decision.

TLR is special. its using the unreal engine which for some reason has complications for the ps3. it is basically a PC graphics engine thats why it was able to be on PC and 360 more easily.

square is losing money even with MS funds. it looks as if MS would have had to hand out 15 million (this doesnt take into consideration the lost sales EU will probablly recieve) and i cant see head guys in ms allowing this. conversation probablly went like this 'lets pay more than 15million to a japanese company to make an rpg' higher up 'what will that give us in return?' other guy 'well we wont make the money back up' higher up 'no'

MS barely gets money back per sale for this game since they are not the devs or publisher. probablly less then 10 dollars per copy.

andrew - the chances of xedge coming west was even smaller look where its at now

Well englisch is my secondary / third language, if you consider that my englisch is not that bad ;)

Just get used to the fact, that PS3 isnt the console you should buy, if you like RPGs. That wont change.

Porting games like SO to the PS3, which is much more complicated to program costs very much money.

Why do you think they didnt release Last Remnant for PS3 until now? It even got a release on PC. Because its not easy to port it to the PS3.

So if Square can get some money from MS they save much work and nearly get the same profit as if they would release it on PS3 too...

andrewclear (on 10 April 2009)

TacoBoy49, are you *really* comparing the sales of a SRPG to a Star Ocean game?

On the PS2, SRPGs sold similiar numbers to Valkyria Chronicles ... but Star Ocean 3 sold over a million.
TacoBoy49 (on 07 April 2009)
CtatYou said that PS3 hyped games sell to expeions. I gave examples where you are wrong. Valkria Chronicles is an AAA game, higher rated than most nintendo games and is heavily hyped by ps3 owners. This game burped higher numbers in 3 weeks with out europe.
Max King of the Wild (on 07 April 2009)
taco one thread talking about how awesome VC is doesn't constitute as hyping to no end. Add the fact that this game is suppose to outsell such a niche new IP by 10 fold and these numbers aint impressive.

what does this game have to do with those games?
TacoBoy49 (on 06 April 2009)
Max, PS3 fans have been hyping the hell out of Valkria Chronicles to no end and this game already surpassed it. Your wrong. Just for the record, Gears of war 2 out sold the entire Sony first party games of holiday 2008 combined. That includes Socom+LBPR22+motorstorm+Valkria Chronicles+ singstar+buzz< Gears of War 2. Then throw in Fable 2, Left 4, and you can see how wrong you are.
Max King of the Wild (on 06 April 2009)
taco - considering alot of fans said NA would make up for the lost japanese sales (im willing to bet the devs were hopeful too) then this not selling over 1million is a flop.

i find it hysterical that when ps3 fans hype something and then give expectations of the game and are right on the game still flops and doesnt meet expectations but when 360 fans hype games up give expectations and are no where close the game did a fantastic job and exceeded expectations
TacoBoy49 (on 06 April 2009)
this is not a flop. 34k is a flop. 340k in 5 weeks is not a flop. it also has Europe yet to be released in. it should have about 600k -700k in life time sales. Not a flop at all. yes I know SO 3 sold a little over a million on the mammoth PS2.
Squall_Leonhart (on 05 April 2009)
I wonder how long it will be until this game is available on the PS3! If it stays 360 exclusive then i will buy it for my 360 but not a fan of the controller so would prefer a PS3 version!
Skeeuk (on 05 April 2009)
@aghahowa your post is pointless.

SO is far far greater franchise than WKC it should have done a lot more, imo SO has flopped in sales, but is still a good game to play.
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 05 April 2009)
It was all for no reason to.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope, is bottom line a great game. infact i'd dare to say the BEST JRPG this Gen up there with Valkyria Chronicles.

But when it comes to JRPG sales now an days people love to talk smack about it for one reason or an other.

In conclusion, dont argue with random people on teh internetz its a waste of time.

Gosh. Both HD consoles sell JRPG's poorly. I think they all should be multiplatform or on the wii/psp/ds instead.
Aghahowa (on 04 April 2009)
@ Max King of the Wild.

Tell me what you want, but if PS3 users keep saying, that JRPGs flop on Xbox360, they should look at the selling numbers for PS3 RPGs games.

SO sold 200,000 on Xbox360 with a userbase of 1,000,000 players in Japan.

White Knight Chronicles sold 333,000 with a playerbase of 3,000,000.

Now you do the math... and please shut up about WKC not being a "big game" like SO.

It doesnt matter when you dont have COMPETITORS. Its without any competition against other JRPGs.

Eternal Sonata

Xbox360 200.000
PS3 110.000

Enchanted Arms

Xbox 360 140.000
PS3 160.000

Valkyria Chronicles

PS3 330.000

Lost Odyssey Xbox 360

Last Remnant Xbox 360

PS3 users should just stop saying that the JRGPs should be released on PS3 and not on Xbox360.

Square wants to expand to the western market, and the Xbox360 is much stronger there. And if Sony doesnt care about JRPGs (if they would, they would offer Square etc. a little bit of money, like MS does), its their problem.

PS3 users always think, that they are the "JRPG" community, but i tell you what, i owned a PS1 and PS2, because i love JRPGs, same as some of my friends.

And now? We all have a Xbox360.

Why should i go on supporting Sony, if they dont care about the games i like? I dont support a console developer, i support the games, i would even buy a SEGA console if it would offer the games i like :)

Max King of the Wild (on 02 April 2009)
aghahowa - so why shouldnt i compare sales to a different user base? no way in hell do devs want their franchise to slip. if user base is a concern devs should take that into consideration. so basically its the devs own dumb ass fault for this franchise sales decline. not mine and not the genre. im fairly certain this game would be on track to 1.29 million if it was multiplat.

Im looking at ps3 sw list and it beats 360s senseless in japan. WKC is not a big name like SO in japan and L5 isnt a big name like SE yet WKC outsold SOs first 5 weeks in its first week alone. WKC is on its way of being the best selling L5 rpg. Disgea is on track with 1 and 2. it droped off the charts but that doesnt mean it aint selling and im pretty sure 1 and 2 are based off shipments. basically im sure brett would have lost track of those games too if he had to teack them. VC is a very successful game and practicality outsold every similar ps2 game like it with a fraction the user base(Oh look i just shot your smaller user base theory down)

SINCE WHEN DO RPGS SELL THAT WELL IN JAPAN?!?! no clue why the hell you thought that. this game isnt a rare occurance like FF, DQ, or KH.

seriously go learn about the market then come back and talk 330k is a hit your insane if you dont think so.

bitmap - no i didnt and i wouldnt want to play this game

I really like this game, it's inconsistent but good. The story does not really pick up until halfway through disk one, The cutscenes are all over the place (epsecially the lip syncing) ranging from terrible to decent. The combat and item crafting systems are awesome though. Most of the characters are likeable (I hate lymle and that featherfolk girl). I'm at the begining of disk 4, hope the ending is good.
Bitmap Frogs (on 01 April 2009)

You bought your ps3 at launch, didn't you Max?
outlawauron (on 31 March 2009)
Aghahowa, you can't realyl criticize Max when you use his same type of argument.

Userbase really isn't too important. Once you get up to a point, it's meaningless with these small JRPGs.

And White Knight Chronicles is going to sell on par with every other non-DQ Level 5 game in Japan.
Aghahowa (on 31 March 2009)
@ Max King of the Wild

So you are comparing selling numbers of JRPGs on playstation 2 which sold around 120,000,000 times with a console which sold around 30,000,000 times?

In my opinion its senseless. You should also consider that there was a much bigger JRPG fanbase a few years ago. Now the big PC RPGs also get a console release, like Witcher, Dragon Age, Fallout3, The Elder Scrolls, Divinity 2. But the JRPGs are the same as they were 5 years ago, just with better graphics. Thats why they dont get good ratings, and thats why they dont sell well.

Look at the PS3 JRPGs, they also doesnt sell better, even White Knight Chronicles wasnt able to sell really much in Japan, if you consider the hardwarebase of PS3 and Xbox360 in Japan you can even say, that Star Ocean sold much better than Whiteh Knight Chronicles.

Thats what I wonder about, I thought that White Knight Chronicles would sell ~600.000 or more in Japan, since 3,000,000 own a PS3. These 3M people are waiting for good JRPGs, since the PS3 doesnt offer that much....then if you sell around 330k in Japan, its not really successful.

We just cant expect any JRPG to sell like they sold on PS2, because Xbox360 and PS3 together didnt even sell enough consoles to reach the PS2.

like i said 130k first 30 days (110-120 US) compared to so3's 230k npd (250-260k NA) first 30 days.

looks to of lost 50% so far. it'll be lucky to make it to 400k in NA.

i dont know others sales for so3 but i wouldnt be surprised if it follows the same trends and loses some sales from 4 .

i dont know if ms's money was enough to cover lost sales. it looks as if its already losing more than 600k with JP+NA which would be around 15 million.

If the mass RPG loving japanese gamers don't buy this game just because they don't like the console it's on then they don't deserve the game to begin with and will miss out on and deprive themselves of a great game. Being loyal to a developer is noble but I would never be loyal to a console maker or not buy one just because I don't like the company. The software developers are the ones who should get our support.

Great game, and saying the "only on xbox 360" doesnt mean anything doesnt make much sense. Halo or Gears of War speak for themselfs period.

As for this selling more if it was on PS3 probably since PS3 has a bigger install base in Japan. A game like this shoulda been on 360 and PS3 then the sales woulda hit a million I think. .
Avarice28 (on 25 March 2009)
Sorry 500k first day on ps3 and this game would be setting a lot closer to 1million than it is currently.
Avarice28 (on 25 March 2009)
I disagree, if this would have come out on both systems (ps3 and 360) it would have done 500k in japan first day. The problem with the sales are the one that came out on the psp(first departure) has currently outsold this game. And that was a snes game with some tweaks added to it, this is sad Square let this game bomb on the lower installed base 360 in japan.

What is SHMUPGurus doing on that Boxart?!
Riot Of The Blood (on 18 March 2009)
I want something no less than Vesperia quality. I'm not sure if this game is on that level or not.
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 17 March 2009)
Yup buy it, shadows right, and @Zen- np man it would be boring if everyone all liked the same thing so i respect your opinion.

I like Tri-Ace games in general so thats one of many reasons why i favor Star Ocean: TLH over ToV so..
Shadowblind (on 16 March 2009)
buy it.
Riot Of The Blood (on 16 March 2009)
Still iffy about buying this or not.

Congrats Square Enix

You're wrong bro. So, so wrong.

worst leg in Japan I've seen for a while... 165k to 6k in 2 weeks... I wonder if it's going to catch up to Valkyria Chronicles lol...
shinyuhadouken (on 14 March 2009)
as long as it reaches 200,000 in japan alone, i'll be happy.
Anben7 (on 13 March 2009)
so glad bought 360, even there is one on ps3, it probably takes at least a year to make it, so i guess the best way just go buy a 360.....
Squall_Leonhart (on 13 March 2009)
I wonder if SE will think about putting this game on the PS3 as well to increase the amount of sales that the game will get, as i would buy it and i'm sure a lot of other PS3 owners would!
g-value (on 12 March 2009)
@ Seraphic_Sixaxis

But you told me you only played alittle bit of it before you gave up on it. You played all of Star Ocean 4 but like what an hour of ToV? If you did play the whole game and did not like it then i guess its just not your taste.
Aj_habfan (on 12 March 2009)
Those Japan legs are some of the worst I have ever seen.
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 12 March 2009)
@G- I played tales of vesperia, it was far to anime-ish and the battle system was a boring rip-off of till the end of time.

The story was okay i guess, but the characters were AWFUL, i'll remember characters from Enchanted Arms over ToV.

So yes i have played ToV, and SO4 is far better in every way in my opinion.

But dont mind me, i never liked tales games ever since Legendia so its only natural for me to loath them all afterwards.
vspectra (on 12 March 2009)
Would be selling more if SE actually had a world wide release. They pushed the date back again for Europe, now it's releasing in June.
MonstaMack (on 12 March 2009)
With current Trends it should outsell Blue Dragon in the long run, and compete with LO sales. Lost Odyssey is still the "king" of JRPG sales since the rest are WRPGs... till Final Fantasy comes out.
TacoBoy49 (on 12 March 2009)
im 30 hrs in after giving it the benefit of the doubt. some interesting parts kept me playing, but after i sensed the totality of the entire game, i realized its just a really long episode of a really bad power ranger show. and just as annoying. ToV dealt with mature issues like friendship, racism, lloyalty, hope, and the classic good vs evil. it was one of the most moving rpgs since FF VIII. This game just sux!
Egghead (on 12 March 2009)
Yeah i can see this selling well in its launch period and then some more over time.

The great graphics will draw people, though i dont think itll do as well as TLR
g-value (on 12 March 2009)
@ Seraphic_Sixaxis

You did not even play ToV so how do you know its better? I'm not saying ToV is better then Star Ocean but you can't claim a game is better when did not even play it.
shinyuhadouken (on 12 March 2009)
i hope it reaches at least 300k in the US.
Barozi (on 12 March 2009)
good 2nd week sales in the US !!!
MetalSabe (on 12 March 2009)
Taco Boy give it time, once I got used to controlling the camera I started enjoying it a lot more! (still don't like the toggle run though)

The cutscenes even get better as the game progresses. I'm 15 hours in and really enjoying it.

Not as consistnently polished as ToV but still a great game. Hopefully it slow burns it's way to good sales like Lost Odyssey.

memory2zack (on 12 March 2009)
290k in 2 weeks is not bad, but not great either for Star Ocean. Big drop in sales comes from Japan due to being a 360 exlusive. I wonder how it will fare in NA compared to SO3 and I wonder if the big releases of these weeks had any impact on it.
TacoBoy49 (on 12 March 2009)
I have this game. Its painful to play. Tales of Vesperia is a million times better than this.I can't even begin to explain all its problems. I love Lost Odyssey more than Final Fantasy for those that think I'm trolling. Its justt fact. Its horrible.
Fenristh (on 12 March 2009)
No, it's not the JRPGs that need changing, it's putting them on a console without the fanbase for them.
mrstickball (on 12 March 2009)
Looks like SO4 has some legs in the US on it's 2nd week.
hunter_alien (on 12 March 2009)
Well there goes the chance for this game to pass the million mark IMO.. except if it will get bundled... to bad, it seems JRPGs arent this gens strongpoint :|
Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 12 March 2009)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope > Tales of Vesperia and any other JRPG on the Xbox 360.
g-value (on 11 March 2009)
@ Eggbear

If it was not for ToV releasing in japan first and helping sell out Xbox 360 across Japan Star Ocean would not have sold as much as it did. At the time ToV was released in japan around 600k Xbox 360 were sold in japan. Star Ocean got released when there is now 900k Xbox 360 sold. I think you get the differents.
Egghead (on 11 March 2009)
@ Euphoria14

Its funny how the IP excuse seems to work in every way

SO4 sold well - Buh buh teh IP!

SO4 outsells ToV - LULZ lets forget the dozens of Tales games, because now SO is actually bigger!

Blue Dragon sold well - Buh buh teh Sakaguchi

Blue Dragon flops on DS - LULZ teh new IP!

TLR sold well in Japan - Umm...

Its funny how you claim to be so 'fair-minded' when in fact you are cherry picking. This game has blown the lid on ToV, Blue Dragon was the game that made people remember that the 360 even existed and not forgetting, THE IMMENSE marketing it got.

Truth is this has sold well, and the proof is there, but offcourse, denial will come in on all fronts.
Chris Hu (on 11 March 2009)
@Hero_time88 way nice way to inject some humor into this wall of doom.

Chris Hu, I won today in a basketball game from a 83 years old. I'm great!
Chris Hu (on 10 March 2009)
The sales are so lousy that's why its already the second best selling 360 game in Japan LOL. People do your research before you start bashing a games sales numbers. Furthermore with less then two weeks complete data its way to early to judge the sales numbers of a game.
TheInfectedBy590 (on 10 March 2009)
Is this coming to PS3? (I hope, it looks nice)
Poor sales though :(
bb (on 10 March 2009)
@andrewclear posted 08/03/2009, 08:58

By the software that you compare, as for the software of PS3, "White Knight Chronicles" is big IP (this includes a development cost and the advertising cost). In addition, "Disgaea 3" and "Valkyria Chronicles" are not categories of the RPGs in Japan.
However, all 360 software of the comparison is big IP (this includes a development cost and the advertising cost). This is meaningless.
Let's compare it by the same software released for the same period.
MonstaMack (on 10 March 2009)
I don't know how much marketing Last Remnant or IU had, but I am seeing US commercials in CT.

So this game should have good legs in the US if the word is getting out.
Antagonist8503 (on 09 March 2009)
Well andrew, all I have to say is that Square Enix did not abandon Sony like you say. Final Fantasy Versus 13 proves that SE hasn't really abandoned Sony and left them out of the cold just yet. What about FF7:CC and FF:Dis - fighting game? Maybe Sony was just being smarter with what's being released for their console. But, most likely Microsoft is just paying SE to release JRPG's for their console first and then porting it to the PS3 later. Star Ocean 4 and the Last Remnant will most likely go to the PS3 with added content to make up for the timed exclusivity. Don't even argue about that, because the developers said that either of the 2 may or may not become multi-platform, but they DID not say that the 2 wouldn't. With that in mind, I can almost guarantee that once FF13:versus comes out, it's going to wipe all those games you listed off the map.
Euphoria14 (on 09 March 2009)

Not for nothing, but 220k is hardly something to brag about when Blue Dragon, which was a brand new IP on a smaller userbase at the time sells equal and/or better than Tri-ace's flagship title.
Barozi (on 09 March 2009)
Actually it's smarter to get cash from MS before the release of the game instead of waiting until the game made enough money after some months on another console.
Egghead (on 09 March 2009)
TLR is overtracked, but whatever, its sold well, especially in Japan.

Regardless, this week SO4 sold roughly 5k, its now at 190k solid.

The thing is, i bet if it had better 'legs' and sold less, the fanboys wouldnt be whining, but whatever. Either way, the game has sold really well in Japan, and is going to get to 200k easy, if not 220k. That is fantastic, even ToV couldnt do that

Thats the funny thing, fanboys call this a failure yet forget how ToV did, it sold well and yet is a bigger IP (fanboys will deny this too)

The game has just started in NA, who knows how its going to sell over time? Both IU and TLR had weak openings and went onto do quite well.
Jo21 (on 08 March 2009)
andrew japan sell double jrpg just look loo at so4 sales even with the bad economy.

it would be a smart thing to release it on a more viable console in japan like the wii or the ps3.
jpain333 (on 08 March 2009)
lol....i've never seen someone so desperate to prove TLR is undertracked...
Max King of the Wild (on 08 March 2009)
andrew - nice comparison there.... NOT.

TLR - not at 600k SE's reports prove that.

BD - heavily bundled in japan (shouldnt effect the total too much but it should be notted)

disgea3 a very very niche game selling close to ToV a main story tales game? thats poor sales for tales.

did you expect demons soul to do well in japan? i think you should reconsider that.

as for VC that game sold 150k more than disgea 3. obviously very successful for that type of game.

only successful game you show is LO and WKC already is more than a third of its sales with only on small region. now i dont believe so4 would have done 450k first week in japan alone but looking at yakuza 3 resident evil 5 im sure it could of more than doubled its first weeks sales.
andrewclear (on 08 March 2009)
I also forgot to mention that JRPGs sold more in japan than america last generation. This generation, they just aren't selling well in Japan, unless they are on a handheld. America is the country buying these games, so the 360 is the logical choice for the platform.
andrewclear (on 08 March 2009)
NSS7 posted 06/03/2009, 04:03
If this game was on PS3 it would sell at least 450k 1st week in Japan and 40k in US. Also in others PS3 games always sellng more than X360 ver except shooter. Square Enix, you made a wrong decision for making SO4 X360 exclusive. Better if they made it multiplat."

What crack are you smoking. The PS3's rpg sales are rather pathetic.

Disgaea 3 = 210k (without europe)
White Knight Chronicles = 340k (only japan)
Valkyria Chronicles = 360k (which is a shame cause it's a damn good game).
Demon Soul's = 80k (only japan)

Now...for comparison, let's look at 360 sales.

Star Ocean only had 40k less sales in it's opening week (in Japan) compared to White Knight Chronicles. They actually ran out of stock for Star Ocean in Japan, and the ps3 has a bigger user base (by 2 million users). Don't think that translates to well when it's only a difference of 40k.

Last Remnant = 600k
Tales of Vesperia = 290k (no europe)
Infinite Undiscovery = 470k
Blue Dragon = 620k
Lost Odyssey = 910k

And eternal sonata sold more on the 360 than ps3.

Not only does the 360 have more JRPGs, they also have better sales with their JRPGs. Star Ocean should surpass Last Remnants sales over time, so getting close to 1 million isn't out the question. Sure Star Ocean 3 sold more, but considering the size of the PS2 base against the 360 base, 1 million for the Last Hope is great.

PS3 fanboys need to stop crying cause sony dropped the ball this generation. The japanese developers abandoned sony for a reason, and the sales figures don't lie.

One more note, most JRPGs on the ps2 didn't reach 1 million, so you can't really call blue dragon, Last Remnant, Tales of Vesperia, or Eternal Sonata failures. They sold what they should've. And in some cases (Last Remnant), they are selling better than they should be.
SHMUPGurus (on 07 March 2009)
I just finished the game yesterday, and I will say this: Best JRPG this generation. Simply outstanding work tri-Ace!

Since I'm so much into the SO series because of this game (and First Departure), I'm now playing Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. I might actually finish it this time around! xD
vspectra (on 07 March 2009)
It's doing the same as Lost Odyssey's first week sales, and this is without EU's numbers. It's far from a failure, especially for a JRPG on a western console...
pslee (on 07 March 2009)
i think sony doesn't care about this game. they got ff13 exclusive in japan on ps3. compared to ff13, SO series are not comparable.

Totally agree with Gearbox this game is already #2 in Japan when it comes to 360 games and is only two to three weeks away from being #1. If you really think that it did bad sales wise guess what all publisher that release games for the 360 in Japan would kill for similar bad sales.

490k shipped by the end of december. Brett has 453k sold by that time. considering its a brand new release and holiday period i expect at least 150 on shelves WW. considering they were so quick to slash price i doubt there would be any less than 150k on shelves.
jpain333 (on 05 March 2009)

it will reach 1 million. Just wait and see.
mrstickball (on 05 March 2009)
Max - prove VGC is off on TLR sales. Last I checked, SE said that TLR shipped 490k as of December. It's March now.

Interestingly enough, Star Ocean 4 has the highest debut of any JRPG within the 360 library. It beat Lost Odyssey by a few hundred, and still hasn't released in PAL.

Egghead (on 05 March 2009)

Square-Enix's marketing this gen just isn't what it used to be. They seem hesitant to release footage throughout a game's development and they tend to keep their games hidden to a Western audience, which unfortunately leaves us in the dark.

Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 04 March 2009)
Wtf... i just realized the sales = unimpressive...

This game better not turn out to be like Valkyria Chronicles in terms of sales.

To many really great JRPG's this gen are getting the shaft...

And the title "The Last Hope" is quite blunt to the point....

If this doesnt sell well this will indeed be the last star ocean game which would suck cause i want a Sequel to till the end of time. :L

Seraphic_Sixaxis (on 03 March 2009)
Im a pretty new xbox 360 owner, and this was the reason i got one in the first place even if it does come to PS3 later i dont care in the mean time i can play this and some of the 360's exclusives to.

Gotta say though, Star Ocean: TLH is/isnt what i expected it to be, very much a mixed bag of awesome-sauce with a funny after-taste.

So far though, im about 3 hours in to the game, and already i can tell this is the Best JRPG of the current generaion of consoles hands down.

Although im also playing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 aswell and its reeally good to.

Overall at this point in time, its better to own both HD consoles to get the best of both worlds when it comes to JRPG's and Exclusive games.
