500,000 Copies of One Piece Pirate Musou Ordered in Japan

Japanese retailers already have 500,000 copies of the PlayStation 3 exclusive One Piece Pirate Musou ordered, said Namco Bandai's vice president Shin Unozawa. The game is a mash up of the One Piece and Dynasty Warriors franchises. The game is set to release on March 1.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's president hiroshi Kawano, also spoke about the Gold Edition hardware bundle (pictured below). The design is the first time Sony has used a pressing process, instead of having the design painted onto the console.

Because it would do horribly here. A number too insignificant to mention would bother purchasing a One Piece PS3.

For me is not insignificant... I would Buy it! I love PS3 but I love One Piece even more.. what is better than a PS3 and One Piece? is a PS3 with One Piece!

It does look awesome. reminds me of the goldeneye controller. Although I think the Tales of Xillia PS3 looks even better.

In a dry year for consoles in Japan, it's nice to see at least one million seller on the horizon that isn't Dragon Quest X.

After looking at the data, I think we can safely say that this will be one of the top few PS3 games of all time in Japan. Half a million preorders alone put it in the top 10 or 15 PS3 games.
Store orders does not equal pre-orders. However it does mean they expect to sell through the half a million very quickly.

Still don't know if I should import it or wait for a hopeful localization.
While in a Musou game localization doesn't make a huge difference. At the same time Bandai Namco just registered Pirate Warriors in the US. That would be the translation of the games title so localization is looking VERY likely.

@TheSource: Considering that Hokuto Musou was able to pull 320k opening this will surely do more than that as One Piece has way bigger brand and appeal.
Hmmmm, methinks they should have made it a PSV game, with a special ed PSV, to give ythe new console on the block a boost. Textured top surface looks cool. Though I'm not a fan of gold colouring, I suppose it's appropriate for One Piece.
HOLY SHIT!!! i didnt knew that one piece is that big in japan ,even more popular than dragon ball and naruto etc. and over a half million pre-orders it will be one of the biggest ps3/HD launch in japan this gen.I used to be a huge one piece fan myself and i am very proud of what one piece achieved in gaming because one piece games werent that good in terms of sales and rating comparing to other anime games like naruto and dragon ball ,i might pack out my ps3 back just fir this game if they will relaese it in the west...cant wait to see the sales of this game! :)
Half a million store orders. Not pre-orders. Big difference. However yes One Piece is ridiculously popular in Japan. Going around the arcades a massive percentage of the UFO catchers are One Piece related.

One Piece is the most popular manga in Japan, even bigger than Dragon Ball and BY FAAAAAR bigger than Naruto. Really good sales anyway, and that's definitely the best looking PS3 ever.

Last year One Piece manga sold 37 million copies while Naruto only managed to sell 6 million lol.

One Piece is the best manga of its genre and for whatever reason Japan still loves those Dynasty Warrior games. Good one on Namco Bandai for being willing to team up with Tecmo Koei to milk cows.

That's a lovely, lovely looking blu-ray player. Looks like the PS3 will take first place the week One Piece Musou releases. Too bad SONĄ thinks PS3 fans in NA should go sit on a lubed traffic cone when it comes to custom consoles.
Can it open bigger than Tales of Xilia or FFXIII-2? One Piece games ARE big in Japan (the 3DS one clearly showed that) but it remains hard to believe... I'd say 300 to 400K.
I'm not expecting it to more than 300,000 week one honestly, although the preorder data could change a lot in the next few weeks. Sell through week one is typically 60% of the shipment though in case a game is unexpectedly hot - so 500,000 shipped week one makes sense.
The game is tracking above Hokuto Musou and Dynasty Warriors 7 in COMG's preorder chart. This One Piece is a Musou game, so the comparation is fine. Hokuto Musou opened at 380k. One Piece is going to beat that number easely,
